Abstract: Physician Review Websites (PRWs) help users select physicians by providing both structured and unstructured data on physicians and patients' experiences with physicians. In this paper, the adequacy of the available in­ formation on PRWs is investigated. An empirical study is conducted to understand the information that patients seek from PRWs through a survey instrument administered to 344 patients. A topic modelling approach is then employed on 666,551 text reviews of patients using data from a popular PRW in India to discover information available on the PRWs. Combining both approaches, it is found that 12 out of 25 topics are either unavailable or only partially available, indicating an information gap. Two topics which constitute the information gap are then utilised to conduct a full factorial experiment on 153 respondents using a Latin Square design. Experimental results demonstrate that adding relevant information improves the physician selection process. Our work con­ tributes to the healthcare IS literature on online physician selection and the role of information availability. The results will help PRWs and hospitals decide how to restructure information on their websites and devise stra­ tegies to nudge patients to write reviews highlighting the desired information. Abstract: Can ordinary consumers be persuaded to choose reward-based crowdfunding over retail purchase to own new technologies? To investigate, we developed a C2P (consumer-to-patron) Persuasion Model and tested it using mixed-factorial experimental design. Results showed positive influence of crowdfunding discounts on consumers’ likelihood to fund/refer which was negatively moderated by the expected waiting time to receive product. Af­ fective cues helped with getting referrals but not donations. Technology attractiveness and price, along with consumers’ gender and risk-propensity had significant influences. Based on the findings, we recommend tech­ nopreneurs to consciously target ordinary consumers for funding, and e-commerce and crowdfunding platforms to form design synergies. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the popular use of animated banner ads on websites, extant research on the effects of web animation has generated mixed results. We argue that it is critical to identify feature-level animation characteristics and examine their individual and combined effects on capturing online consumers’ attention across different task conditions. We identify three key animation features (i.e., motion, lagging, and looming) based on three attention theories and investigate their effects on online consumers’ attention and recall across browsing and searching tasks in three laboratory experiments using an eye tracking machine. Experiment 1 found that both motion and looming (animation features) are effective in attracting online consumers’ attention to animated ads when they are performing a browsing task. However, combining a salient feature (e.g., motion) with another salient feature (e.g., looming) does not improve the original attention attraction effect, suggesting a “banner saturation” effect. Further, we found that online consumers’ attention positively affects their recall performance. In Experiment 2, none of the animation features or their interactions had a significant effect when the subjects were performing a searching task, indicating that task is an important boundary condition when applying attention theories. Experiment 3 replicated Experiment 1 in a more realistic context and produced similar results. We conclude the paper by discussing theoretical and practical implications as well as avenues for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Typing passwords is vulnerable to shoulder-surfing attacks. We proposed a shoulder-surfing resistant scheme embedded in traditional textual passwords in this study. With the proposed scheme, when the password field is on focus, a pattern appears in it as a hint to tell the user how to enter a password. Following the hint, the user needs to skip some characters while typing the password. The characters to be skipped are randomly selected so that an observer will not be able to see the whole password even if the authentication procedure was recorded. We evaluated the proposed scheme in a usability study. Compared to traditional passwords, our scheme achieved a similar level of accuracy while only required marginal additional time to authenticate users. Participants also expressed significantly higher acceptance of the new technique for security-sensitive applications and gave it significantly higher ratings in perceived security, shoulders-surfing resistance, camera-recording resistance, and guessattack resistance. Abstract: Social networking site (SNS) driven e-commerce, the latest social commerce (s-commerce) phenomenon, gains prominence with the introduction of the call-to-action feature. The call-to-action feature on any sponsored post or advertisement on SNS redirects the user to a linked e-commerce website that offers the product. Information cues available on the SNS are expected to influence user decision making on the linked e-com­ merce site. Set in the context of Facebook driven e-commerce, this study explores how likes on Facebook influence user's purchase and recommendation decisions on a linked e-commerce website. Using controlled experiments we find that a higher volume of likes on Facebook leads to a higher likelihood of purchasing and recommending a product on the linked e-commerce site. This effect is found to be mediated by the user's initial product attitude formed on Facebook. An additional analysis examining the strength of the influence reveals that the mere presence of likes is not sufficient to impact the user's decision making. In fact, a low volume of likes elicits user behavior similar to absence of likes. The influence is effective only if the number of likes is substantially high. The findings of the study add to the s-commerce literature by establishing the inter-site influence of Facebook likes on user's purchase and post-purchase decisions and providing empirical evidence of the efficacy of SNS-driven e-commerce. Abstract: Social commerce websites predominantly display two types of action-based online social information: product’s past purchases and bookmarks (e.g. wishlists). The impact of inconsistency between these two information cues on consumer decision making is uncertain and is expected to be dependent on the purchase context. In this paper we investigate the effect of (action-based) online social information inconsistency on consumers’ likelihood of purchasing a product for temporally proximal and distant purchases. Using a controlled experimental set-up with Latinsquare design and linear mixed model analysis we find significant interaction effect of information inconsistency type and temporal distance of purchase on purchase likelihood of product, establishing the purchase timing dependent impact of information inconsistency. The paper offers several academic implications, and valuable insights for website managers to elicit favorable consumer responses even under information inconsistency and effectively design their product recommendation strategies. Abstract: Handling and packaging of heterogeneous products with different weights and sizes with optimal packaging schemes is a challenging task for the e-commerce industry. Furthermore, to keep the packaging process on a standardized level independent of the experience level of the employee, the demand of digital humancentered solutions is increasing. Against this background, two different digital assistance systems to indicate packaging order and scheme – Augmented Reality (AR) based data glasses and a LED based packaging assistant - were developed. In a laboratory study the interaction between human and both digital devices regarding subjective workload, usability, user experience, physical complaints and objective measurements was evaluated – with a conventional paper list as control group. Results indicate that both the AR and LED interface are appropriate solutions to assist warehouse workers in packaging. However, it can be supposed that the LED interface seems to be a better method in terms of physical and especially visual strains. Collapse

Abstract: Under the arbitration mechanisms most used in the field, Final-Offer Arbitration (FOA) and Conventional Arbitration (CA), the negotiators still do not reach high agreement rates by themselves. This paper presents an experiment to evaluate a new arbitration mechanism: α-Final Offer Arbitration (α-FOA). This mechanism is similar to a second-price auction, which punishes the loser with a value (α) proportional to the difference between her final offer and the arbitrator’s fair settlement. The experiment also divides the pool of subjects within a session into two groups according to their estimated risk preferences in order to assess how the contract zone depends on the relative risk preferences of the subjects involved in negotiation. Although agreement rates overall are low, the results show that α-FOA has a significantly higher agreement rate than both CA and FOA. Contrary to theoretical prediction, the more-risk-averse group of subjects does not have a higher agreement rate than the less-risk-averse group. Collapse

Abstract: According to behavioral economists, a “nudge” is an attempt to steer individuals toward making desirable choices without affecting their range of choices. We draw on this concept, and design and examine nudges that exploit social influence’s effects to control individuals’ choices. Although recommendation agent research provides numerous insights into extending information systems and assisting end consumers, it lacks insights into extending enterprise information systems to assist organizations’ internal employees. We address this gap by demonstrating how enterprise recommendation agents (ERAs) and social nudges can be used to tackle a common challenge that enterprise information systems face. That is, we use an ERA to facilitate information (i.e., reports) retrieval in a business intelligence system. In addition, we use social nudges to steer users toward reusing specific recommended reports rather than choosing between recommended reports randomly. To test the effects of the ERA and the four social nudges, we conduct a within-subject lab experiment using 187 participants. We also conduct gaze analysis (“eye tracking”) to examine the impact of participants’ elaboration. The results of our logistic mixed-effects model show that the ERA and the proposed social nudges steer individuals toward certain choices. Specifically, the ERA steers users toward reusing certain reports. These theoretical findings also have high practical relevance and applicability: In an enterprise setting, the ERA allows employees to reuse existing resources (such as existing reports) more effectively across their organizations because employees can more easily find the reports they actually need. This, in turn, prevents the development of duplicate reports. Collapse

Abstract: Research on how to manage the online waiting experience has begun to emerge but has primarily focused on the use of distracting cues for online wait management (e.g., text and images that distract the user from the wait). The use of temporal information in waiting webpages (e.g., text and images that convey the duration of the wait) has received little attention from the information systems literature, and we have limited understanding about how the two types of cues (temporal information and distractors) affect wait time estimation. We address this gap by developing a theoretical model of how these cues affect the waiting experience and perceived waiting time. We tested the model with a 2 x 2 x 2 x 2 controlled lab experiment and 1025 participants using progress bar treatments that included temporal information (spatial and text description of the wait time duration) and distractors (progress bar animation and accelerated filling of the progress bar) with both short and long wait conditions. We found that the two types of cues reduced perceived waiting time through different nomological paths. Temporal cues reduced perceived uncertainty about the wait, while distractor cues directed attention away from the wait, increasing perceived enjoyment and wait time distortion. Further, the enhanced waiting experience reduced the perceived waiting time. Further, these cues were effective in managing the online waiting experience with both short and long waits. Collapse
