Abstract: The increasing use of information technology artifacts in daily life makes security a shared responsibility of both users and companies. In recent years, increasing a user’s objective (i.e., actual) security knowledge and providing applications with more secure default settings appear among the most ubiquitous tools companies use to broaden their efforts to help users make more secure decisions. Examining both solutions matters because they are widely used, cost effective, and understood by many security practitioners. Additionally, default settings and users’ objective knowledge provide anchors for decision-making. However, human errors and insecure default settings are increasing and raising further questions about the efficacy of such efforts. Using the theory of bounded ra­ tionality, we investigated the role of objective, subjective (i.e., self-assessed) security knowledge, and default settings security level on the overall decision security. We found that objective security knowledge can lead to secure decisions when paired with high subjective security knowledge. In the absence of the latter, objective security knowledge is unable to lead to better security decisions. Furthermore, subjective security knowledge reduces the extent to which users fully accept default security settings, thereby mitigating bias toward insecure default settings. Collapse

Abstract: Connected vehicles enable a wide range of use cases, often facilitated by smartphone apps and involving extensive processing of driving-related data. Since sensitive information about actual driving behavior or even daily routines can be derived from this data, the issue of privacy arises. We explore the impact of short privacy assurance statements on user perceptions by considering two data-intensive cases, usage-based insurance, and traffic hazard warnings. We conducted two experimental comparisons to investigate whether and how privacy-related perceptions about vehicle data sharing can be altered by different text-based privacy assurances on fictional app store pages. Our results are largely inconclusive, and we found no clear evidence that such short statements can significantly alter privacy concerns and increase download intentions. Furthermore, our results suggest that general and threatspecific privacy assurance statements likely yield no or little benefits to connected vehicle app providers regarding user perceptions. Abstract: Mobile devices have become increasingly prevalent in the context of consumers’ offline search and shopping behavior by acting as personal decision support tools. This paper investigates the relationship between con­ sumers’ real-time location and their search behavior when shopping offline. We develop two location-specific measures based on mobile device usage to analyze the association between a consumer’s real-time location and their search behavior: Present store distance and present store density. We apply these measures to a unique dataset from a leading mobile product information app that includes >13 million search sessions from 2.5 million consumers searching for 1.8 million different products. Our findings show that store distance and store density significantly influence consumers’ mobile search behavior: detailed searches for product-specific attributes (search depth) increase as store distance decreases and store density increases, while the number of jointly searched products within the same category (search breadth) increases as store distance and density increase. We also find that durable products weaken the main effects of store distance and density on search depth but strengthen it for search breadth. These results provide insights for offline retailers to better understand locationspecific consumer demands and improve their mobile in-app targeting and product assortment decisions. Collapse

Abstract: The advent of the Internet of Things (IoT) has not only improved people’s quality of life but also raised concerns about information privacy. Although several studies have been conducted regarding information privacy concerns, there has not been sufficient discussion of the information privacy trade-off behavior in the IoT environment. Because previous studies only indirectly measured the information privacy trade-off behavior, the understanding of the behavior itself or its cause is limited. To address this issue, this study explored information privacy trade-off behavior in more depth using a large-scale sample and two-step analysis. Both panel data (23,724 samples for three years) and cross-sectional data (350 samples) were used in the analysis. The analysis results confirmed the existence of the information privacy trade-off for IoT users. Furthermore, it was found that the trade-off is associated with the social value of IoT devices and that men with IoT experience predominantly have strong trade-off behavior. Collapse

Abstract: Consumers on mobile retail apps face significant search costs due to the small screen size of devices. One of the search aid features to improve the search convenience is to show consumers a small set of frequently used searches conducted by peer consumers on the platform as a prime cue. We refer to this feature as the popular ranking search aid (PRSA). Collaborating with Meituan, a leading services mobile app in China, we implement a large-scale field experiment to explore how PRSA affects consumer search activities and purchases. Our analyses generate three key findings. First, PRSA leads to an increase of 18.6% in page views and a 6.4% increase in purchases. Second, the change in shopping behavior emerges through a change in search behavior with more nondirected searches and fewer directed searches. Third, our mediation analysis supports that search behavior mediates the business outcomes. We offer theoretical and managerial implications. Collapse

Abstract: Innovations in healthcare technology aim to address challenges in health outcomes. COVID-19 contact tracing apps were introduced in various countries as an innovative health solution to stop the spread of the virus. Although aiming for the greater good of the population through maintaining public health, the introduction of these apps was accompanied by controversial debates about their privacy implications leading to low adoption worldwide. In fact, digital contact tracing raised privacy concerns associated to information sharing within the app, which impacts intention to use. However, in the question of health versus privacy several factors come into consideration. We apply a privacy calculus approach to study users' intention to use COVID-19 apps under privacy trade-offs. Based on representative samples from Germany and Switzerland, we find that individual safety outweighs societal safety benefit, trust is crucial for mitigating risk perceptions, and social norm has a great impact on individual's intentions to use. Abstract: Though gig platforms increasingly employ algorithmic management and monitoring, the benefits and costs of platform monitoring and how these correspond to gig workers’ cognitive work engagement are not well un­ derstood. Drawing on supervisor monitoring literature and conservation of resource theory, this study proposes two types of gig platform monitoring (observational monitoring and interactional monitoring) and builds a moderated mediation model to analyze how these platform monitoring methods impact gig workers’ cognitive work engagement. PLS-SEM analysis of data from 269 time-lagged surveys from gig workers shows that, through the mediation of affective trust, observational monitoring is negatively and interactional monitoring is positively related to cognitive work engagement. Furthermore, interactional but not observational monitoring is positively related to cognitive work engagement through the mediation of affective commitment, and method control can enhance the positive relationship between affective trust and cognitive work engagement. These findings contribute to the literature on the nature of gig platform monitoring and its impacts on gig workers’ cognitive work engagement by differentiating observational and interactional monitoring. Gig platform managers will benefit from knowing that interactional but not observational monitoring can promote gig workers’ work engagement. Collapse

Abstract: A consistent positivity bias has been found in many sharing economy platforms. Extreme positivity bias in re­ views makes the review system meaningless, misleads the public, deteriorates users’ trust in the sharing plat­ form, and negatively influences consumers’ participation on the platform. Considerable anecdotal evidence shows that privacy concerns are a barrier to providing honest negative reviews. However, research studies on the consumers’ impact of privacy concerns on review behaviors are sparse. This study aims to fill the gap by investigating consumers’ privacy concerns in writing negative reviews. Specifically, this study examines the effects of two types of privacy concerns, online privacy concerns and physical privacy concerns, on the intention to provide negative reviews and contingent factors (monetary incentive, venting negative feelings, and warning other consumers) that could influence this relationship. The study also examines the effectiveness of two fair information practices (i.e., privacy policy and anonymous feature) in mitigating privacy concerns. We evaluate our research model using a scenario-based online survey, providing broad support for our hypotheses. The study delineates the implications of the results for both practice and research. Abstract: With the growth of innovative positioning technologies, research into individuals’ behavioral challenges posed by location-based services has become increasingly popular in recent years. Scholars from various social sciences and management disciplines have attempted to address such challenges in order to understand and mitigate concerns for locational-data privacy. In view of the broad applicability of location-based services, we conduct a review of eight prominent IS journals to investigate and understand individuals’ behavioral challenges in using such services. Our review reveals that perception of individuals’ locational-data privacy is constantly influenced by their respective social norms, social reality, and cultural background as well as their current geographical or locational factor. In light of this finding, we outline possible directions and opportunities for further IS research around three philosophical approaches- “positivist”, “interpretivist”, and “critical”- with the aim of enriching our discussion of how and why individuals’ social reality and cultural factors influence their perception of locational- data privacy. Abstract: The digital transformation is threatening the local stationary retail sector. Local Shopping Platforms (LSPs) were considered as a promising approach to support local owner-operated retail outlets (LOOROs) with their digitalization, but they struggled in utilizing the special characteristics, like e.g., the locational advantages of the affiliated retailers. In this study, we assess the current state of LSPs in Germany in 2020 with the help of a structured content analysis and semi-structured telephone interviews, addressing also the impact of the Covid-19 crisis. Our results show that the preferential platform type has changed. The lockdown has significantly boosted the number of Store Locator Platforms as one type of LSP. Furthermore, it turned out that LSPs with a “Strictly Local Approach” introduce more location-based services than LSPs with a “Scaling Local Approach”. Collapse
