Abstract: Because most information systems in real-world domains are complex, practitioners often use different types of conceptual modeling scripts to understand them. Modeling methods such as UML, for example, provide more than a dozen scripts for practitioners to use. We study how script readers decide which of several different scripts to use during systems analysis and design tasks. We carried out a free-simulation experiment to test how users select scripts based on two factors: combined ontological completeness and ontological overlap. We find that participants indeed decided to select more than one script to achieve a more complete domain representation. But, when they selected more than three scripts, they decided to remove scripts and reduce combined completeness to increase the clarity of the combined representation. Our results indicate that script readers prefer relatively less complete scripts with high levels of clarity over more complete, but more overlapping, script combinations. We detail the implications these findings have for the theory and the practice of conceptual modeling. Collapse

Abstract: Managers choose and implement controls to promote employee behavior that contributes to IS development (ISD) project success. Still, ISD project failure rates remain high, suggesting that project controls employed are often not effective. In this regard, existing IS project control research commonly considers how managers configure controls (in terms of control modes and degree) and enact them (control style), whereas the role of employees' perceptions of the legitimacy of enacted controls remains largely neglected. To address this shortcoming, we conducted a vignette study with 232 participants to quantitatively test a set of hypotheses on how different control modes, degrees, and styles impact employees' legitimacy perceptions, and ultimately their compliance intentions. Our analysis reveals a significant impact of all three control dimensions on legitimacy perceptions. Moreover, we identify a positive link between legitimacy perceptions and compliance intentions. To increase control effectiveness, our results thus suggest that managers should choose and implement ISD controls in a way that employees perceive as being just and providing them with autonomy. Abstract: Information systems development methods pay little attention to security aspects. While several alternative approaches for designing and managing secure information systems have been proposed; these lack fully comprehensive modeling schemes in terms of security. No single method covers all modeling needs. Rarely can these approaches be integrated into existing development methods. Also, these approaches constrain the autonomy of developers. This paper develops a framework that explains the limitations of the alternative secure information systems design approaches. We illustrate the normative value of this framework with a case study of a frameworkbased solution: meta-notation for adding security into information systems development methods.The manuscript was received 05/09/2011 and was with the authors 6 months for 2 revisions.Patient-centered care is a relatively new form of healthcare that empowers people when they receive services, but patients must get ready for the active roles they are going to play in order to participate. Based on a literature review, this study conceptualizes that patient-centered care readiness has two basic capabilities: (1) health information access and (2) coordination and communication. The development of these capabilities, leading to the ultimate objective of patient choice and empowerment, depends on the status of health digital inclusion. To maximize the benefits of patient-centered care and reduce the risk of health disparity, it is necessary to assess the patient-centered care readiness of a population, especially to find out who is at a disadvantage. Using the 2009 U.S. National Health Interview Survey data, this study conducts logistic regression and classification tree analyses to predict the two capabilities with eleven physiological, population, socioeconomic, and healthcare-related variables. The results suggest that there is an uneven development of patient-centered care readiness in the country, especially for those who are socially and economically disadvantaged, such as minority people and senior citizens. The findings provide researchers and practitioners the insights on how to cross the gap and prepare the whole nation for the transition. Collapse

Abstract: This study develops an integrated research model to examine various factors affecting the IT adoption in the context of the Unified Modeling Language (UML). UML is one type of business process modeling techniques, which in turn is a key aspect of the business process reengineering. The proposed research model is based on IT adoption framework and organizational culture theory. The model identifies fourteen variables, covering seven broad categories (IT characteristics, organization technology, environment, organization structure, organization process, organization culture, and project culture) that could potentially impact UML adoption in organizations. This comprehensive conceptual model is further validated by survey data collected from 251 North American organizations across five different industries. Our results support the proposed conceptualization and shed new light on the key factors associated with firms' adoption of UML technologies. Theoretical and managerial implications of the findings are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Different approaches on how to implement or deploy enterprise resource planning (ERPs) systems exist. Although virtually nobody really doubts importance of ERPs for running a business today, there is a sentiment regarding their implementation – both in terms of time and money. In this paper we investigate relationship between factors influencing selection of a specific implementation approach and companies’ ability to stay on budget when implementing ERPs. The question is: whether factors influencing implementation approach then affects to what extent ERP system implementation costs exceed planned costs for implementation. The questionnaire research, focused on this issue, was conducted in Denmark, Slovakia and Slovenia. Dependent variables were percentage of actual ERP system implementation costs and staying on budget vis-à-vis the planned costs and budgets. The independent variables were implementation approach, country, company size, information strategy, representation of the IT department on board level, and number of implemented modules. Main conclusions are that number of modules influences selection of implementation approach and companies with information strategy are more likely to stay on budget. However, implementation approach does not significantly influences implementation costs and clear relationships between factors influencing selection of implementation approach and costs for ERP implementation could not be found.
