Abstract: In the recent era of "Internet of things" (IoT), giant logistics enterprises achieve their sustainability goals comparatively easier than "Small to Medium Business Entrepreneurs" (SMBEs). Currently, IoT connected trucks generate massive data such as locations, cabin environmental conditions, vehicle movements, engine status variables, driver behavioral patterns, etc. Large-scale enterprises process this information in real time to maintain green compliance and waste reduction. However, SMBEs often lack resources to afford smart vehicles and tracking systems for critical sustainability parameters to become visible in time, henceforth, failing to comply with green standards. This research proposes a cost effective, lightweight cloud-based enabler i.e., "Green Tracking as a Service" (GTaaS) based on sustainability eco-system, backing the need of such service through case studies conducted in retail markets of Sydney. By performing state and barrier analysis of multiple fresh produce SMBEs, we aim to help them go green, through continuous monitoring and predictive maintenance techniques, implemented via GTaaS. Abstract: Incumbent firms typically face significant risk of losing the relevance of their physical core when facing industry disruption driven by digital technologies. Existing literature emphasizes a digital first approach, whereby firm offerings are fundamentally redeveloped from a digital point of view, from the point of conception. While this prescription can help accelerate innovation, it does not tell us how incumbents might safeguard the relevance of their traditional physical core resources when going digital first. This is important, since major discontinuities in strategic repositioning, while often celebrated in digital innovation and transformation literature, create significant risks to firm survival. To this end, we conduct a grounded analysis of a European automotive firm's innovation journey over an eight-year period. We contribute to the digital innovation and transformation literature by developing a process model explaining how a digital first approach can be employed in a way that also safeguards the physical core. Abstract: This paper provides the first empirical evidence of consumer responses to autonomous last-mile delivery using Alibaba's recent implementation in Chinese university campuses as a case study. The study leverages customer-level data from three universities over three years, employing a difference-in-differences (DID) approach combined with dynamic matching to estimate the impact of autonomous delivery adoption on order quantities. The results reveal a significant increase in the number of orders following autonomous delivery adoption with a 21% growth. The efficiency and flexibility of autonomous vehicles reduce consumers' travel costs, driving long-term usage and increased sales. However, the value of autonomous delivery diminishes when a fee is charged. The study contributes to our understanding of the value of autonomous last-mile delivery and its potential advantages over traditional courier delivery. Collapse

Abstract: Augmented reality (AR) can foster service innovation and thus cope with some of the most urgent challenges in the service science domain, namely supporting frontline workers while ensuring high safety standards. Therefore, the utilization of AR can help to achieve these goals. On the contrary, AR remains a complex technology with specific requirements and preconditions that demand expertise to overcome them. Based on a case study, we derive a framework for designing AR solutions, which helps divide the complexity of designing and developing AR-based services to support the adoption and diffusion of AR applications. Such an encompassing perspective on initial AR explorations helps to transform the acquired information into a thorough proof of concept, pilot implementations and ultimately productive software. Abstract: Due to the catastrophic consequence of possible incidents caused by the storage and transportation of hazardous materials, effectively mitigating such risks is of vital importance. This paper proposes a gradual-coverage game describing the situation of locating emergency facilities, to which the Shapley value can be used to evaluate the candidate locations. To be specific, the rescue risk and utility are assessed in terms of the response time to construct a gradual-coverage game. Then, we characterize the Shapley value by proposing two new axioms. Furthermore, to ensure that the analytical model can be practically applied to real-world situations, an algorithm for locating emergency facilities is designed based on the properties of the Shapley value, which is then tested for efficiency. Abstract: Though environmentally friendly in many regards, local supply chains are often inefficient due to lack of proper infrastructure. This paper explores the use and placement of mobile hubs for consolidation and distribution of goods in local supply chains. Specifically, we look at local food supply chains where food typically travels from rural farms to suburban and urban restaurants. Currently, consolidation is minimal and not optimized in these supply chains. This paper computes suitability and location analysis through a novel multi-criterion scoring methodology utilizing kernel density and network analysis. The effectiveness of these mobile hubs is assessed through strategic routing, where the routes are optimized for time and distance. Results indicate that on average mobile hubs do in fact reduce mileage and number of stops, lessening emissions in addition to saving time and money. The proposed methodology can be implemented in other local supply chains to better consolidate and distribute goods. Collapse

Abstract: Freight exchanges are central to the logistics industry, as they reduce empty runs and meet spot demands. To improve their efficiency in terms of automation and enhance trust between the participants, we propose a decentralized freight exchange implemented using public blockchains. With our solution, we also address shortcomings of public blockchains, such as scalability and privacy. We present two artifacts: a general architecture for an electronic logistics marketplace (ELM) and a concrete implementation as the proof of concept for a freight exchange. The solution is implemented using two off-the-shelf public blockchains and a public distributed file system. Additionally, we investigate the implications for the general ELM model and show that an ELM based on a blockchain can be viewed as infrastructure rather than a market participant. Collapse

Abstract: On-demand services through Internet platforms, e.g. ride-sharing, food take-out services, have emerged as a new business model. In these businesses, customers place orders on Internet platforms and get services fulfilled offline in a timely manner. In this paper, we examine the factors that affect the efficiency of on-demand food take-out services. Besides operational and road factors, we highlight the role of information integration of the ordering platform and the logistics platform. Our results show that information integration of the two platforms significantly increases service efficiency. Through integration, the logistics platform can optimize delivery dispatch based on more comprehensive and accurate historical and real-time demand and delivery information, avoiding suboptimal and short-sighted decisions. We also find that the efficiency of on-demand services depends much more on the information integration and the operational efficiency of the service provider than road conditions. We discuss the theoretical and practical implications for the business model of on-demand services. Collapse

Abstract: The continuous nature of digital innovation presents a particularly challenging process for organizations to manage. We propose that IT governance helps to maintain the required balance of control and flexibility over IT resources by determining the appropriate decision rights and mechanisms for approving and managing this continuous digital innovation process. We use a Delphi study to examine the direction of influence, effectiveness, and ease of implementation of 34 IT governance practices in the oil and gas industry. We find that relational mechanisms are perceived as more effective and easier to implement than structures and processes, and we identify a minimum baseline of IT governance practices to foster continuous digital innovation. The results of this exploratory study suggest that IT governance plays an integral role in increasing an organization's capacity to successfully innovate digitally. Collapse
