Abstract: Organizations employ process mining to discover, check, or enhance process models based on data from information systems to improve business processes. Even though process mining is increasingly relevant in academia and organizations, achieving process mining excellence and generating business value through its application is elusive. Maturity models can help to manage interdisciplinary teams in their efforts to plan, implement, and manage process mining in organizations. However, while numerous maturity models on business process management (BPM) are available, recent calls for process mining maturity models indicate a gap in the current knowledge base. We systematically design and develop a comprehensive process mining maturity model that consists of five factors comprising 23 elements, which organizations need to develop to apply process mining sustainably and successfully. We contribute to the knowledge base by the exaptation of existing BPM maturity models, and validate our model through its application to a real-world scenario. Collapse

Abstract: Patent management tasks involve many stakeholders from diverse disciplines and hierarchies as well as from inside and outside the organization. By drawing on the transaction cost and stakeholder theories, Blockchain technology offers new opportunities to rethink the way in which stakeholders are organized and collaborate. Although Blockchain technology receives considerable attention from both the public and academia, the question of how Blockchain technology leverages patent management in particular has so far been neglected, although it holds great promise. Consequently, this is what we choose to be our basic research question. In response to it, we conduct a systematic literature review, following a procedure in three steps. Out of an initial sample of 714 articles, we select 52 as being particularly relevant, and classify them in accordance with the dimensions of the 7D Patent Management Maturity Model. Three main foci regarding the use of Blockchain technology emerge – i. e. for the generation, the enforcement, and the exploitation of patents. This study contributes to scholarship and management by showing that Blockchain technology mitigates environmental and behavioral uncertainty, while stimulating new governance forms and business models by reorganizing or discarding stakeholders. Abstract: Requests for a coordinated response during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the limitations of locally-operating public health agencies (PHAs) and have resulted in a growing interest in their digitalization. However, digitalizing PHAs – i.e., transforming them technically and organizationally – toward the needs of both employees and citizens is challenging, especially in federally-managed local government settings. This paper reports on a project that develops and evaluates a continuous (vs. a staged) maturity model, the PHAMM, for digitalizing PHAs as a cornerstone of a digitally resilient public health system in the future. The model supports a coordinated approach to formulating a vision and structuring the steps toward it, engaging employees along the transformation journey necessary for a federally-managed field. Further, it is now being used to allocate substantial national funds to foster digitalization. By developing the model in a coordinated approach and using it for distributing federal resources, this work expands the potential usage cases for maturity models. The authors conclude with lessons learned and discuss how the model can incentivize local digitalization in federal fields. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations are increasingly initiating and expanding their digital transformation initiatives to become more data-driven. Given that such digital transformations are highly complex and idiosyncratic endeavors, organizations striving to become a data-driven organization (DDO) have many options on where to start. To better understand such transformation starting points, we analyzed 13 companies of various industries and sizes currently undertaking DDO transformations. On this empirical basis, we find that top managers embark on transformation journeys by either focusing on the transformation foundations (asset-driven, workforce-driven), or on the outcome (exploitative use case-driven, explorative use case-driven), with each starting point showing different DDO dimensions being addressed first. Our data suggest that the selection of a specific starting point is mainly based on managers' understandings of a DDO and the motivation to become such an organization. Finally, our work points to advantages and disadvantages of the respective starting points. Contributions and practical implications are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Constantly evolving economic demands caused by phenomena such as digital transformation necessitate businesses and their underlying models to adapt. One possible solution for enhancing innovation potential and increasing revenue is implementing an innovation capability maturity model. This research replicates an existing maturity model development approach, which accounts for the unique characteristics of a class of companies based on their size and sector. Thus, by using a data-driven method, we provide an innovation capability maturity model for small industrial companies. We identified 21 combinations of factors that can affect innovation capability maturity, grouped into a knowledge and organizational dimension. Using a set-theoretic approach, we identified configurations of these factors that lead to low, medium, and high levels of innovation capability maturity. Based on these findings, we support an empirically driven, set-theoretic approach for developing a maturity model that can be used for higher applicability and representativity in individual classes of companies. Abstract: To achieve organizational goals and remain competitive, evaluating, selecting, and managing IT projects and proposals to build a value-driven portfolio is a critical activity. IT project portfolio management (ITPPM) tools assist these portfolio-related activities, support strategic decision-makers, and help complete more IT projects successfully. Despite existing research on this topic, knowledge about the characteristics and design elements of ITPPM tools is still limited. We develop a taxonomy based on scientific literature and 60 real-word ITPPM tools with four perspectives, 20 dimensions, and 51 characteristics. Subsequently, we perform a cluster analysis and identify five ITPPM tool archetypes. Our results and findings contribute to the knowledge base and integrate scientific and practical knowledge to build the basis for further research on ITPPM tools. Further, we structure the ITPPM tool market, guide practitioners in selecting an appropriate ITPPM tool and support the development of new solutions or develop existing ones further. Collapse

Abstract: The Covid 19 pandemic revealed the need for Public Health Agencies to mature digitally. To help those agencies with their digitalization endeavor, a public health agency maturity model (PHAMM) has been developed, evaluated, and employed by 366 institutions to determine their digital maturity and to prioritize actions within digitalization projects. This paper discusses the digital maturity of German public health institutions and derives first insights into components spanning the PHAMM dimensions. Public health agencies can use these components to leverage their digital maturity in future digitalization projects. Implications are discussed for how digitalization projects with an enhanced impact can be defined and for future maturity modeling research. Collapse

Abstract: The digital transformation of supply chains is an important yet challenging endeavor for many companies. Prescriptive maturity models are tools that can offer valuable guidance and support. However, no prescriptive maturity models in this field of research nor a process for their development can be identified in the literature. Therefore, this paper describes the design of a procedure model to develop a prescriptive maturity model based on design science research and a systematic literature review. Furthermore, the procedure model is initially tested by applying it to develop a prescriptive maturity model using the digital transformation of supply chains as an exemplary field of application. The results are evaluated based on expert interviews with four companies, leading to generally positive feedback. However, as the evaluation of the procedure model is preliminary, limitations and future paths to improve this work are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Maturity models are essential tools to evaluate Industry 4.0 readiness. However, they have limitations in supporting organizational strategies over time and are insufficient to create company-specific Industry 4.0 roadmaps. This paper presents a research project to steer Industry 4.0 transformation in a leading paper pulp company listed on the Euronext Lisbon stock exchange. The contribution to the body of knowledge is a novel approach for Industry 4.0 adoption that extends the Balanced Scorecard with a fifth perspective and exposes the value of maturity model fragments: fractions of maturity models pertinent to a custom strategy. The proposed solution can support continuous improvement in long-term digital transformation strategies. Moreover, the lifecycle of maturity model fragments, namely, (1) dimensions and criteria elicitation, (2) personalization, and (3) strategic alignment, opens innovative prospects for maturity model design, tailorability, and practical relevance.
