Abstract: Aligning staff with changing customer and store needs is key to store operations management. There is considerable research on personnel scheduling, but little on the common phenomenon of Real-Time Labour Allocation (RTLA), where mismatches between workforce supply and demand are addressed by allocating potentially cross-trained employees in real time. Our interviews with retail practitioners confirm that RTLA decisions lack analytical justification. In view of this, we design a generalisable stylised Retail Store Simulator (RSS) and instantiate the RSS using data from a gourmet supermarket. Simulation results show substantial long-term benefits to store performance from RTLA – a potential 6.6% increase in market share compared with No-RTLA. We further discuss RTLA's benefits under various employee cross-training configurations, answering a question from the collaborating retailer – “given the benefits of RTLA, how should we manage workforce flexibility?” We conduct extensive “what-if” analysis and find that broadening employee skill range and deepening employee proficiency increase the benefits of RTLA. Abstract: In the context of increasing greenhouse gas emissions, especially the meat processing industry is under pressure by the society to report their product’s environmental impact, which is ten times higher than for products from vegetable origin. However, meat processing companies struggle with the collection and provision of detailed data, as production processes are complex and variable. Recent research showed that automated sensor systems could provide environment relevant information. Nonetheless, these sensors are not diffused in practice. One solution is the usage of mobile devices in production processes to collect environmental data for product carbon footprints. In this study, we present an action design research project, developing a mobile application for GHG emission data collection, using OCR algorithms for automated sensor read-out tasks. An evaluation showed that practitioners perceive the application to be efficient, thus coping with missing automated sensor systems for GHG emission reporting processes. Collapse

Abstract: Greenhouse gas emission reporting gained importance in the last years, due to societal and governmental pressure. However, this task is highly complex, especially in interdependent batch production processes and for reporting on the product-level. Green information systems, which collect, process and enhance the environmental information basis, are seen as a possible solution for this complex task, but only few Green IS accrued in IS research and practice. In this paper, we present initial results from an action design science research project. We studied three meat processing companies and developed a Green IS artifact that is capable to collect, process and report energy consumption and GHG emissions on product and process level. The evaluation for two sausage products shows that the artifact enhances the information basis with more detailed data towards average calculations, enabling more sustainable business processes. Finally, we propose design principles for the class of environmental accounting on product-level. Collapse

Abstract: To cope with the emerging demand for individual products and services, new approaches for handling the individualization in dynamic supply chains are needed. Our object of investigation is to establish Situation-awareness (SA) in an assistant information system for supply chain partners to cope with individualization-driven demands. Our contribution is an event-driven architecture design to enable situational planning using the Situation Calculus upon distributed contextual information. Sensors raise events among supply chain partner’s information systems, which are combined to context events in order to derive situations on partner level. Our works follows the Design Science in Information Systems Research to design and evaluate the architecture design. The preliminary descriptive evaluation uses life stock transports as an example.
