Abstract: Media misinformation and disinformation continue to threaten the foundation on which scientific, political, and other socially relevant decisions are made. This paper examines games designed to serve as interventions for changing player’s behaviors in misinformation and disinformation media. It analyzes the games formally through two common communication intervention theories for behavior modification and education: inoculation theory and transportation theory. The media theories are first framed in the context of games generally, then they are applied across six research focused games ; Harmony Square, Bad News, Fake It To Make It, Factitious and FakeYou!. The work offers theory-informed observations and recommendations to support improved efficacy for existing and future playable media. Collapse

Abstract: Lead users are often established in an organizational innovation process to attenuate the difficulties a company faces, such as high costs or the obscurity of customers’ needs. But to benefit from these lead users a major challenge is to characterize and identify them especially in the fast-moving world of social media. Therefore, we aim to design a tool to identify lead users automatically for the two innovation phases (“Idea generation” and “Development”) by combining different approaches such as social network analysis, topic modeling and sentiment analysis. Thus, we consulted the design science approach and applied our artifact to 11,481 contributions of an online digital platform. The technical realization of the six different characteristics and their respective weighting according to the different phases of the innovation process resulted in different lead users and showed the necessity of distinguishing between them. Our results were evaluated and confirmed by the identified lead users and an expert. Hence, our investigation contributes to both practice and theory (kernel theories and design theory) alike. Abstract: Videoconferencing fatigue or 'Zoom' fatigue has emerged as a distinct and pressing phenomenon in light of rapid videoconferencing adoption during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. As part of an ongoing broader literature review project, we find that extant literature primarily conceptualises videoconferencing fatigue as an error that needs to be detected and corrected based on techniques derived from medical, psychological, technological and media theories. However, we observe that videoconferencing is also a work activity, and thus consider what additional insights on videoconferencing fatigue could be obtained by deconstructing videoconferencing according to the labour that is involved in videoconferencing. Based on thematic analysis of the extant literature, we thus develop a perspective on videoconferencing in relation to the performative and interpretive labour that videoconferencing entails. This new way of thinking about videoconferencing fatigue, as labour cost, enables us to offer implications for theory and practice, and comment on directions for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Although much research has examined how individuals convey their identities to others at work and outcomes related to identity communication, we know little about outcomes associated with identity communication in virtual settings. In this study, we examine the relationship between professionals’ motives for communicating their identities to others and their perceptions of virtual team communication effectiveness. In doing so, we consider the moderating role of features of the communication media (information control, reach, reprocessability) on these relationships. We find that three motives (self-protection, self-creation, and self-enhancement) relate to team members’ perceptions of communication effectiveness. We also find evidence for the influence of communication media features on several of these relationships. We provide an overview of our data collection methodology and results, concluding with theoretical and practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: Commitment to a neutral point of view is a pillar of Wikipedia culture. Despite a strong culture, the open nature of the community presents challenges for cultural assimilation. Central contributors who make up the community’s core engage in activism to combat traditional forms of bias. However, peripheral contributors may not adopt or adhere to the community’s cultural values and may reflect the very bias the community attempts to combat. These differences create tensions between central and peripheral contributors. Peripheral contributors are likely to contribute traditional types of information bias (e.g., bias against women). In response, central contributors may overcorrect in ways that reverse traditional biases. We compare gender bias on female and male CEO profiles and find evidence of bias that advantages women and disadvantages men. While peripheral contributors may dominate early in the life cycle of core-periphery structured open collaboration communities—due to the volume of contributions—the core dominates in the long term through sustained, systematic activism. Our results suggest that a balance of activity from central and peripheral contributors results in content with the most neutral point of view. Collapse

Abstract: Our understanding of how interrupting the work of an individual affects group outcomes and the role of communication technologies (CT) in shaping these effects is limited. Drawing upon coordination theory and the literatures on computer-mediated communication and interruptions, this paper develops a multilevel theory of work interruptions. It suggests that interruptions that target individuals can also affect other group members through various ripple effects and a crosslevel direct effect. We also discuss how the usage of five CT capabilities during interruption episodes can moderate the impact of interruptions at the individual and group levels. Our theoretical model draws attention to the importance of examining the individual-to-group processes to better understand the impact of interruptions in group environments. Additionally, by accounting for the role of the use of CT capabilities during interruption episodes, our work contributes to both the interruptions literature, which dedicates scant attention to the interrupting media, and to IS research on media use and media effects. Abstract: This research develops and tests a model of online consumer fraud to determine how the capabilities of communication technologies affect the rationalization of fraudulent behaviors. The model is based on research about the rationalization of fraud, media capabilities, and computer-mediated deception. This investigation empirically tests this model by analyzing 459 Facebook advertisements and 1,896 surveys completed by university students. The findings indicate that the capabilities provided by communication technologies affect the extent to which media mask cues of deceit and dehumanize others. As a result, some media capabilities increase one’s willingness to engage in fraudulent behaviors while other capabilities deter those actions. Media capabilities that mask cues of deceit and reduce social presence increase the inclination of individuals to rationalize fraudulent activities, while media capabilities that expose cues of deceit and increase social presence deter individuals from rationalizing acts of fraud. Media offering greater capabilities for reprocessability and transmission velocity decrease the inclination to rationalize fraud, whereas greater capabilities for anonymity, rehearsability, and parallelism increase the inclination to rationalize fraud. In contrast, symbol set variety does not appear to significantly affect the inclination to rationalize fraud. Collapse

Abstract: This paper aims at examining whether the innovation approach Design Thinking (DT), which is usually performed in an analogue setting, can also be performed in a semi-virtual setting. We conducted an experiment comparing a fully analogue to a semivirtual DT workshop with overall 59 participants from 27 different countries and 11 different disciplines separated into an experimental- and control group. For the evaluation, we composed items from the psychological construct of Shared Mental Models (SMM) and discussed existing Media Theories in order to draw conclusions on the impact of performing DT semi-virtually in regard to using a digital whiteboard. Against our expectations and assumptions from theory, we reveal that a semi-virtual DT workshop can lead to high levels of shared understanding, satisfaction and perceived effectiveness. We argue that the applied digital whiteboard supports a creative semi-virtual collaboration due to its advanced functionalities, which supports the Media Richness Theory. Collapse

Abstract: A high degree of innovation is becoming a decisive factor for companies aiming at sustainable competitive advantages. New methods of innovation have become increasingly important in practice. Using such methods in globally operating teams requires location- and time-independent solutions such as web-based collaboration tools. This paper evaluates the ability to digitalize the service innovation method Service Blueprinting using a selfdeveloped prototype. The prototype is evaluated thoroughly in two different studies. In-depth user tests with Design Thinking experts and laymen prove the suitability for Design Thinking and the interaction with the prototype from a HCI perspective. Additionally, we evaluate the acceptance, perceived usefulness and effectiveness quantitatively in the light of the prototype’s collaboration capability. The results indicate the transferability of the required mindset through the digital tool as well as its the acceptance and usefulness. It represents a practical and suitable solution for the digitalizing of Service Blueprinting. Collapse
