Abstract: Acknowledging sustainability as a challenge of utmost importance, organizations face questions on dealing with different dimensions of sustainability. Respective actions include a fundamental shift in the purpose of business and almost every aspect of how it is conducted, or in short: an integration of sustainability in organizations’ business model. However, as sustainability is no altruistic end in itself, respective transformation must resonate with organizations’ economic conditions and their position in the market. But when does it pay off for organizations to integrate sustainability in their business model? Within this research paper we find answers by applying a game-theoretic framework and examining competition strategies for organizations integrating sustainability in their business model. Hereby we consider different market scenarios where symmetric and asymmetric, weak and strong, as well as a varying number of organizations interact. Our results suggest different strategies organizations can apply to gain competitive advantage. Collapse

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe relationship between IT investment and performance improvement has been a classic research subject. In earlier research it was characterized as the famous "IT productivity paradox." Decades of research effort later, many IS/IT researchers no longer consider this relationship paradoxical, but it remains a challenge to fully explain "IT productivity variance," that is, a large portion of unexplainable performance variance observed in empirical studies. In this paper, we take a theory development approach to this important issue. Our effort focuses on examining the theoretical foundation of "IT productivity variance." Through literature review, we identify and contrast three prevailing theoretical perspectives to suggest the plausibility of a contingency approach. Contextual factors can significantly affect the relationship between IT investment and performance improvement. We identified three such factors that were not thoroughly examined: level of performance measurement, technology type, and technology life cycle. We subsequently propose a contingency model in light of these factors, and develop a set of research propositions. Our effort is a first-step toward bridging a major gap in the literature. The proposed model, while awaiting empirical validation, can provide useful guidance to practicing managers. Collapse

Abstract: We investigate the complementary effect between ERP and e-business technologies, and the impact of such effect on business value creation. Previous studies have examined the effects of ERP and e-business technologies independently, and show positive effects on business value from their use. However, both the resource based view and microeconomic theory as well as practitioner experience suggest that the impacts from their joint and complementary use should be much greater, but this proposition has not yet been examined empirically. We use two different approaches (product term and direct measure approaches) to measure the complimentary effect. Comparing results using firm performance accounting data with self-reported survey data of 150 U.S. manufacturing firms, we provide confirming empirical evidence that the complementary effect between ERP and e-business technologies in creating business value is stronger than the main effects of ERP or e-business technologies alone. We further find that the complementary use of these IT resources to build system and business integration capabilities can extract the most complementarity value for firms. These findings provide empirical support for the theory of competitive advantage that the resource based view (RBV) proposes. Furthermore, these findings provide practical guidance to firms on how to utilize and deploy ERP and e-business technologies in a mutually reinforcing manner. Collapse

Abstract: The relationship between information technology (IT) and a key organizational design variable, firm size, is an important area of study, particularly given the ongoing transition to an information-based economy. To better understand the more nuanced aspects of the relationship, we formulated a bidirectional and time-lagged model that incorporates different perspectives from organizational theories and transaction cost economics. Our two models—the bidirectional and one-year lagged model and the bidirectional and two-year lagged model—were tested using nine-year panel data on IT spending, IT stock, coordination costs, firm size, and relevant control variables for 277 manufacturing firms. We found a sequential interaction between IT and firm size in both of the two models: as a firm grows in size, its coordination activities increase; the firm then uses more IT to handle the increased activities of coordination; this increased use of IT, in turn, decreases coordination costs, and eventually, the size of the firm decreases. It was also found that the presence of coordination costs is necessary for the sequential interaction between IT and firm size, indicating coordination between and within firms is a major reason for firms to invest in IT and for IT effect to take place on firm size. This study has taken an initial step by attempting to empirically examine dual causality and longitudinal effects between IT and firm size, and to reconcile different theoretical perspectives on the relationship between them. We hope this work can act as a catalyst for developing a better understanding of the complex relationship between IT and organizations, with the ultimate goal of offering robust prescriptions for successful structural change. Abstract: Two opposing theories have been proposed to explain competitive advantage of firms. First, the market-based view (MBV) is focused on product or market positions and competition while second, the resource-based view (RBV) aims at explaining success by inwardly looking at unique resources and capabilities of a firm. Research has been struggling to distinguish impacts of these theories for illuminating performance. Business models are seen as an important concept to systemize the business and value creation logic of firms by defining different core components. Thus, this paper tries to assess associations between these components and MBV or RBV perspectives by applying content analysis. Two of the business model components were found to have strong links with the MBV while three of them showed indications of their roots lying in the resource-based perspective. These results are discussed and theorized in a final step by suggesting frameworks of the corresponding perspectives for further explaining competitive advantage. Collapse

Abstract: Although online retailers detail their privacy practices in online privacy policies, this information often remains invisible to consumers, who seldom make the effort to read and understand those policies. This paper reports on research undertaken to determine whether a more prominent display of privacy information will cause consumers to incorporate privacy considerations into their online purchasing decisions. We designed an experiment in which a shopping search engine interface clearly and compactly displays privacy policy information. When such information is made available, consumers tend to purchase from online retailers who better protect their privacy. In fact, our study indicates that when privacy information is made more salient and accessible, some consumers are willing to pay a premium to purchase from privacy protective websites. This result suggests that businesses may be able to leverage privacy protection as a selling point. Collapse

Abstract: Companies’ efforts to manage their information practices to produce transparent privacy policies have yielded mixed results. Web retailers detail such practices in their online privacy policies, but most of the time this information remains invisible to consumers. This paper reports on research undertaken to determine whether a more prominent display of privacy information will cause consumers to incorporate privacy considerations into their online purchasing decisions. At present, there is little strategy analysis available to guide a company's decision about its involvement in the internet market. In this paper, we differentiate between the internet and traditional market channels and define two fundamental strategies for operating on the internet as: pure and mixed. Abstract: IT investments are typically evaluated by weighing the potential benefits and actual costs of the investments. Potential benefits of IT investment, however, do not always translate directly to actual payoffs due to a variety of impediments in the value creation process. There often is a gap between the potential and realized value of IT investments which needs to be defined and measured. We explore the methodological tools available to measure potential and realized value of IT investments and address the gap between them by developing a measurement model grounded in production economics. We adopt the Malmquist productivity index to model the potential and realized value of IT and apply data envelopment analysis (DEA) techniques to solve the model. Using this model, we examine IT investments in industries in the United States during the 1992 to 1997 period. We also examine the impact of within-industry competition. The methodology that we use to address the research questions has two stages. First, we develop a measurement model for computing potential and realized value, and then we apply it to examine and explain the impact of competition. There are five main findings. (1) Less than half of the industries that we examined realized more than 70% of their potential value. Over time though, the industries improved their capacity to realize potential value. (2) Firms in industries that face high levels of competition invest in IT assets with higher potential value. (3) Industries experiencing low levels of competition in their industries invest in IT assets with lower potential value. (4) Despite having IT investments with higher potential value, highly competitive industries are less likely to realize potential value compared to industries in less competitive environments. (5) Finally, industry competitiveness does not impact overall IT efficiency gains over time due to countervailing effects. Collapse

Abstract: External IT consultants are specialists who bring in skills that may be lacking within a firm. However, a lack of firm specific knowledge, low legitimacy, and a host of other factors may limit the effectiveness of IT consultants. From a resource-based perspective, consultants can represent a rich source of short term, valuable capabilities. These capabilities, however, may be at odds with exiting internal capabilities. Institutional theory suggests that external consultants may not share the same norms and beliefs held by the internal staff and consequently their efforts will be ineffective in achieving organizational goals. The paper explores this tension using survey data to track the benefits accruing from the use of internal and external IT capabilities in the adoption of Internet business solutions. The results show that firms see tangible benefits from using external IT consultants but that these benefits are moderated by the level of existing internal IT capabilities. Collapse
