Abstract: Have young adults abandoned Facebook? This study explores several possible factors of social media migration by young adults. A theoretical framework is proposed to examine potential factors that influences young adults' decision to migrate their use of social media. The study employs an online survey to identify the extent to which young adults' attitudes and social norm influence their behavioral intention to abandon social media platforms. Moreover, the study proposes to examine whether fake news and privacy concerns could have influenced young adults' migration choices of social media. Collapse

Abstract: Password manager applications have the potential to alleviate password pain and improve password strength, yet they are not widely adopted. Password managers are dissimilar to other kinds of software tools, given that the leakage of the credentials they store could give a hacker access to all the individual's online accounts. Moreover, adoption requires a deliberate switch away from an existing (manual) password management routine. As such, traditional technology adoption models are unlikely to model password manager adoption accurately. In this paper, we propose and explain how we validated a theoretical model of smartphone password manager adoption. We commenced by carrying out exploratory interviews with 30 smartphone owners to identify factors that influence adoption. These were used to develop a model that reflects the password manager adoption process, building on migration theory. The proposed model, MIGRANT (MIGRation pAssword maNager adopTion), was validated and subsequently refined in a week-long study with 198 smartphone owners, combining self-report and observation to measure constructs. This study contributes to the information security behavioral literature by isolating the main factors that encourage or deter password manager adoption, and those that moor smartphone owners in their current practices, hindering switching. With this investigation, we introduce migration theory as a reference theory for future studies in the information security behavioral field. Collapse

Abstract: This research explains why individuals resume using social networking sites (SNSs) after terminating their use. Drawing on return migration theory, we developed a theory-driven model of SNS resumption that includes two novel antecedents of SNS resumption behavior: nonuse-related dissatisfaction and use-related satisfaction. We also hypothesize that dispositional resistance to change moderates the impact of nonuse-related dissatisfaction and use-related satisfaction on resumption. We used a mixed methods approach to refine and evaluate the research model. Study 1 used the critical incident method to identify SNS-specific antecedents of nonuse-related satisfaction and use-related satisfaction, allowing us to refine the research model. Study 2 used structural equation modeling to evaluate our research model using two three-wave surveys: one with recent ex-users who recently decided to stop using and delete their profiles on Facebook and one with long-standing ex-users who stopped using and deleted their profiles on Facebook a long time ago. We found support for most relationships in our model: nonuse-related dissatisfaction and use-related satisfaction drive resumption intentions, and dispositional resistance moderates these relationships. Furthermore, we found that the time elapsed since users discontinued Facebook moderated these relationships such that the effect of nonuse-related dissatisfaction on resumption intention is stronger for recent ex-users and the effect of use-related satisfaction is stronger for long-standing ex-users. Our findings advance the understanding of resumption, an understudied behavior of the IT lifecycle and IT use and acceptance research. Collapse

Abstract: Investing money set aside in stocks or funds is becoming increasingly attractive as central banks hardly pay any interest. A recent trend shows that retail investors are investing in exchange-traded funds (ETFs), because they enable risk diversification and require little administrative effort, so that even experienced retail investors are switching from stocks to ETFs. To explain this behavior, we draw on migration theory and conduct a qualitative study. Our results suggest that such switches are based on five perceptions, characterized as pull, push, and mooring factors and that two different patterns of switching behavior exist. We contribute to research on IT-enabled investments by (1) showing that context-specific perceptions, such as perceived risk reduction, influence retail investors' switching behavior to ETFs, (2) highlighting that these perceptions let some retail investors invest in stocks and ETFs in parallel, and (3) explaining why experienced retail investors switch to ETFs. Abstract: Due to the rapid developments of Fin Tech businesses, more people are relying on Internet-only banking as their only way of doing financial business. Based on migration theory, the purpose of this study is to adopt the Push-Pull-Mooring (PPM) model proposed by Bogue (1969) to explore consumer loyalty of using internet-only bank services. Furthermore, we identified two Push factors, including perceived security risk and vulnerability, five pull factors, including network externality, information quality, system quality, service quality and service innovation, as well as two Mooring factors, including habit and trust. Data collected from 233 customers provide strong support for the research model. It is hoped that the findings can provide the best improvement strategies to satisfy the internet-only bank services for customers' behavior needs. Collapse

In addition to attracting new followers, retaining existing followers is equally, if not more, important to the success of BM operators. Drawing upon the migration theory, this study develops a push-pull-mooring (PPM) model of BM unfollowing motivations to enhance our understanding of the significant antecedents that promote BM users’ unfollowing intention. The study empirically investigates the three categories of antecedents of the BM unfollowing intention: push (dissatisfaction with information quality, dissatisfaction with service quality, and person brand unfit), pull (alternative attractiveness), and mooring (perceived unfollowing costs) effects. The results suggest that the three groups of unfollowing motivations display varying degrees of influence on BM users’ unfollowing intention. Theoretical and managerial implications of the findings of this study are also discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Ad blockers are a challenging trend for online publishers, as an increasing number of individuals use ad blockers. To understand why individuals switch to the use of ad blockers, this research presents empirical findings that explain why individuals develop switching intentions. Based on migration theory, we explain that individuals’ intention to switch to the use of ad blockers are grounded in factors that pull individuals to use ad blockers, push them away from not using ad blockers, and mooring factors either hinder switching intention or determine how pull and push factors are translated in switching intentions. We conducted 42 interviews and identified relative user experience, increased performance, improved privacy protection and improved security as pull factors, dissatisfaction with online ads as push factor and computer self-efficacy as mooring factor. This contributes to theory by providing an explanation why individuals develop to ad blocker users. Collapse

Abstract: Mobile marketing investment continues to rise steadily even though online publishers have not realized the desired returns, due to increased use of mobile ad blockers. In this study, we take a mixed methods approach, embracing qualitative, quantitative and configurational approaches, to understand why individuals switch to using mobile ad blockers. We draw on the pull-push-mooring model to evaluate what configurations of pull, push and mooring factors influence individuals’ decision to switch to using mobile ad blockers, identifying four distinct configurations of influencing factors resulting in the intention to switch. Furthermore, we specify the unequal effects of influencing factors and validate the quality of our results. Our research deepens the theoretical understanding of the phenomenon of switching to mobile ad blockers and provides valuable implications to online publishers facing the challenge of rising mobile ad blocker use. Abstract: With mobile payment, individuals can buy goods and services through the use of a mobile device and wireless technology. Still, although the usage of mobile payment provides several advantages, such as a more convenient and faster paying-process, it is hardly used. Individuals rather stick with their current payment method, such as cash, EC card or credit card. In this study, we therefore try to find out, what factors would bring individuals to switch from their current payment method to mobile payment. We rely on the pull-push-mooring framework to depict the migration process from the current payment method to mobile payment. The results prove that dissatisfaction with the current payment method has a rather low influence on the intention to switch to mobile payment in comparison with other factors such as perceived usefulness or alternative attractiveness. Furthermore, switching costs have a negative influence on the intention to switch to mobile payment. Collapse
