Abstract: The growing challenges of urban population, congestion, consumption and pollution, prompt cities to respond with policies that progress towards Urban Sustainability. Increasingly, Urban Experimentation (UX) engaging diverse stakeholders for local innovations, is viewed an enabler of iterative progress. Yet, despite various 'smart city' initiatives, how to cope with the dynamics underlying local innovation processes for urban sustainability is unclear. In this paper, we consider Urban Experimentation Platforms (UXPs) as a tool for coping with such dynamics. Using case data from the UXP of 'OrganiCity', our research considers how this UXP interacts with the dynamics of urban experimentation. We present early insights from our problem analysis using System Dynamics and outline our next steps. We find UXPs as both a tool for policy implementation and for adaptive policymaking, with understanding and utilisation of this latter aspect low. We conclude by discussing how IS research on UXPs contributes towards realising the potential of digital infrastructures for societal good. Collapse

Abstract: Using the system dynamics methodology, we leverage extant research on digital platforms and Agile development from the information systems and strategic management literatures to create a dynamic framework for considering the effect of digital platform versioning under different levels of market dynamism. We find that the impact of platform versioning release cycle time (RCT) and the scope of platform updates on platform outcomes (number of packages available and number of downloads) depends on market dynamism, sensitivity of users’ utility to app breakage, and value of the platform’s core functionality to the developers. Among other results, we show that smaller, incremental updates of functionality are generally preferable to larger, radical updates, even in dynamic markets. In contrast, longer RCTs are preferred in less dynamic markets, while small to moderate RCTs are preferred in more dynamic markets. We conclude with an agenda for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Using the system dynamics methodology, we model the effect of platform versioning on platform outcomes. We leverage extant studies on digital platforms in the Information Systems and strategic management literature to form the model's underpinnings. In general, we find that the relationship between platform versioning release cycle time and the outcomes (number of applications available and number of users on the platform) is u-shaped. The relationship is further moderated by the developers' interest in the platform's core functionality and the degree of application breakage resulting from the use of exogenous code in development. Thus, we highlight the tradeoffs of frequent platform versioning and its direct and indirect effects on developers. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for future research on platform versioning. Collapse

Abstract: Open data initiatives have opened new alternatives in creating benefits for the public through secondary use governmental data. From some perspectives, benefits will come from the development of innovative applications using the data, and from the new business models enabled by these applications. From other perspectives, open data applications offer an opportunity for increased citizen participation, improved transparency and accountability. Although the number of published governmental datasets has increased in many countries, producing the expected benefits – and even measuring them – has proven difficult. Creating the expected benefits depends on the development of an ‘ecosystem’ of government actors and private stakeholders that enables multiple forms of interactions and value creation. We propose that modeling and simulation of this open data ecosystem can expand our understanding of its enablers and barriers, leading to improvements in policy making and ultimate outcome of open data initiatives. Abstract: Within both scientific literature and practice, there is limited understanding about the evaluation aspect of business model innovation (BMI), especially in the context of digitalization and the Internet of Things (IoT). The aim of our research project is to contribute by validating whether methodologies from strategy, such as scenario planning, are appropriate means for evaluating business models in this explicit context. Following a Design Science Research (DSR) approach, we develop an approach to implement scenario planning into a BMI process respective of the features. In cooperation with business innovation employees of a well-known corporation in the technology sector, we apply the methodology to realworld innovation projects, empirically validate its viability, and determine how and to what extent it can be used. As a further result, we aim to scientifically expound its effects on creating competitive strategic advantages in the context of digitalization and the IoT. Collapse

Abstract: The digital age has seen the rise of service systems involving highly distributed, heterogeneous, and resource-integrating actors whose relationships are governed by shared institutional logics, standards, and digital technology. The cocreation of service within these service systems takes place in the context of a paradoxical tension between the logic of generative and democratic innovations and the logic of infrastructural control. Boundary resources play a critical role in managing the tension as a firm that owns the infrastructure can secure its control over the service system while independent firms can participate in the service system. In this study, we explore the evolution of boundary resources. Drawing on Pickering’s (1993) and Barrett et al.’s (2012) conceptualizations of tuning, the paper seeks to forward our understanding of how heterogeneous actors engage in the tuning of boundary resources within Apple’s iOS service system. We conduct an embedded case study of Apple’s iOS service system with an in-depth analysis of 4,664 blog articles concerned with 30 boundary resources covering 6 distinct themes. Our analysis reveals that boundary resources of service systems enabled by digital technology are shaped and reshaped through distributed tuning, which involves cascading actions of accommodations and rejections of a network of heterogeneous actors and artifacts. Our study also shows the dualistic role of power in the distributed tuning process. Collapse
