Abstract: We propose a conceptual model of acceptance of contact tracing apps based on the privacy calculus perspective. Moving beyond the duality of personal benefits and privacy risks, we theorize that users hold social consider­ ations (i.e., social benefits and risks) that underlie their acceptance decisions. To test our propositions, we chose the context of COVID-19 contact tracing apps and conducted a qualitative pre-study and longitudinal quanti­ tative main study with 589 participants from Germany and Switzerland. Our findings confirm the prominence of individual privacy calculus in explaining intention to use and actual behavior. While privacy risks are a sig­ nificant determinant of intention to use, social risks (operationalized as fear of mass surveillance) have a notably stronger impact. Our mediation analysis suggests that social risks represent the underlying mechanism behind the observed negative link between individual privacy risks and contact tracing apps’ acceptance. Furthermore, we find a substantial intention–behavior gap. Collapse

Abstract: The practice of using a “second screen” while concurrently watching television (TV) has become a widespread phenomenon. Whereas work on multitasking suggests that TV consumption may lead to lower online sales, research in the area of impulse buying suggests the opposite. In this paper, we study the impact of concurrent TV consumption on online shopping behavior and try to understand this conflict. Our first study analyzes the impact of TV consumption on online shopping behavior at the aggregate level using a panel of 100,000 U.S. customers over a period of 24 months. We address potential endogeneity problems with an instrumental variable approach. Our second study proposes a novel approach to realizing individual-level analysis over thousands of consumers and products. Examining massive amounts of data, we identify a sample of consumers who watched a certain TV show and who were simultaneously doing online shopping at Amazon.com. We then compare their shopping behavior on the day of the TV show to their shopping behavior one week prior. Both studies reveal that whereas TV consumption is correlated with a higher likelihood of online shopping in general, the causal effect of TV watching differs with respect to the complexity of the products purchased. If a TV program appeals to a large TV audience, then this results in fewer immediate sales of high-complexity products (1% increase in TV consumption leads to −2.2% sales) and more sales of low-complexity products (1% increase in TV consumption leads to +8.8% sales). Abstract: The innovations proposed by the mobile phone market have grown steadily in recent years, along with the increasing complexity of the hardware, operating systems and applications available in this market. These changes bring new usability-related challenges that need to be considered during the application development process, as new forms of user-application interaction increasingly require behavioral adaptation. In this situation, usability is an important issue, which depends on usability factors such as the User, their characteristics and skills, the Task he intends to achieve and also the Context of Use in which the user and the application are inserted. The components of this set are detailed in a set of heuristics previous proposed that was evaluated through two heuristic evaluations, which allowed to incorporate improvements to the proposal. Furthermore, a set of 13 usability heuristics and 183 sub-heuristics were proposed, which, through heuristic evaluations, better results were evidenced. The proposal makes it easier for experts to find a greater number of usability problems, mostly of greater severity, compared to the proposal of Inostroza et al. As possible future work, further evaluations may be carried out to evaluate the proposal to include more experts in the field, as well as to use the set of heuristics in a larger number of applications of different categories. Abstract: Today's systems for digital identity management exhibit critical security, efficiency, and privacy issues. A new paradigm, called Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI), addresses these shortcomings by equipping users with mobile wallets and empowering them to manage their digital identities. Various companies and governments back this paradigm and promote its development and diffusion. User experience often plays a subordinate role in these efforts, even though it is crucial for user satisfaction and adoption. We thus conduct a comprehensive user experience study of four prominent SSI wallets using a mixed-method approach that involves moderated and remote interviews and the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ). We find that the examined wallets already provide a decent level of user experience, yet further improvements need to be done. In particular, the examined wallets do not make their novelty and benefits sufficiently apparent to users. Our analysis contributes to user experience research and offers guidance for SSI practitioners. Collapse

Abstract: Although mobile platform ecosystems are highly competitive environments, they provide important entrepreneurial opportunities for app developer organizations. To facilitate app innovations, platform owners regularly release platform boundary resources (PBRs) by adding novel technologies at the platform level. App developer organizations, however, face high levels of technological uncertainty as they create app-level innovations based on PBRs. We examine the effectiveness of the level of distributed sensemaking about PBRs in a context of technological uncertainty arising from either PBR's technological unrelatedness with prior PBRs or app complexity. Using a dataset of 933 PBR-based app innovations, the findings significantly contribute to our understanding of the duality between competition and cooperation in a platform ecosystem. We demonstrate that distributed sensemaking among app developers, who potentially compete against each other, is crucial for enhancing app competitive performance, especially when technological uncertainty is high. Thus, we encourage greater cooperation among app developer organizations to leverage PBRs. Collapse

Abstract: Context factors have lasting impacts on people’s sentiments. Exploring impacts that different contexts have on sentiments can be crucial for managing the increasing number of communications companies nowadays maintain with customers via social media channels. To help companies prevent impacts of negative word of mouth, we provide an overview about sentiment-influential contexts for tweets as one kind of social media texts previously discussed within the literature. We collected an overall amount of 358.923.210 tweets and performed analysis to uncover the effects of continents, mobile devices’ operating systems (OS) and the combination of both on sentiments expressed within tweets. Our results show remarkable differences for tweets originating from North America and Apple devices, which turned out to be the tweets with the lowest sentiments compared to the other continents and the mobile OS Android. Abstract: Check-in services (CISs) are a highly relevant part of location-based services that provide customer value greater than other mobile services due to their technical possibilities; conversely, CISs also create various risks to pri­ vacy, as they enable the continuous live tracking of users. We investigate these risks and develop a third-order privacy risk construct based on communication privacy management (CPM) theory to explain how a set of concerns violates privacy boundary mechanisms and generates perceived privacy risk. A developmental mixedmethod design is used to qualitatively derive the construct qualitatively through 20 interviews and evaluate it quantitatively using a privacy calculus model with structural equation modelling (N = 431). The results confirm the third-order privacy risk construct and reveal new underlying concerns that create this risk. The results of this study are useful for both practitioners and academics, as they provide insights into how context-specific privacy concerns emerge in advanced mobile services, such as CISs. Abstract: Generativity is a technology’s capability of producing new outputs without input from the originator. Platforms are important technologies that embrace generativity. While the literature generally assumes that generativity arises from platform governance and high-level platform design, we propose that generativity also arises from a platform’s three architectural components: the base, the interface, and the add-ons. Drawing on a case study of the Oracle Cloud Platform, we reveal how generativity emerges through the paradox of stability and flexibility in a platform’s architectural components. Abstract: The introduction of mobile payment (MP) has gained increasing attention from German consumers. However, to date, consumers’ MP use has not developed extensively. The majority of German customers still prefer cash and card payment to MP. Thus, this paper aims to explore the drivers and inhibitors of MP adoption, respectively, the continuance intention, for inexperienced prospective adopters and experienced users. By this, MP is compared to existing payment alternatives that MP needs to complement. The Technology Threat Avoidance Theory is used as theoretical basis. Results show that for adoption and continuance intention different factors matter. While inexperienced users are afraid of all kind of risks with financial threats being the most influential one, for experienced users performance threats are more important and the data risk became insignificant. Also, social influence and self-efficacy loose their influence. Collapse
