Abstract: Recruitment is a critical activity for companies, and the research community has also shown significant interest in examining technology recruitment. Companies often communicate how they value their employees along with job requirements to potential candidates in a bid to attract them. However, there is an overall lack of understanding of how candidates react to such information and how their motivation toward the job changes with such online communication. Although there is substantial work that examines the decision-making process of managers who do technical hiring, to the best of our knowledge, there is a paucity of work that investigates the decision-making process of technical candidates. The broad research question studied is how including certain content in online communication about a technical job opportunity may (de)motivate heterogeneous candidates differently in applying for the job. We theorize the underlying process of how including certain content in online job communication may influence candidates’ propensity to apply and their minimum acceptable salary increase if they were to join the company. Additionally, we capture mediating variables that influence the effect of different online content on candidates’ propensity to apply and on candidates’ minimum acceptable salary increase. Abstract: We use the lens of the intrinsic/extrinsic motivation theory to holistically model the effects of intangible awards on member contribution in virtual communities. Using multiple studies on Yelp, we validate that the influence of award stimuli on contribution outcomes become significantly moderated by the aspect of contribution (quantity versus quality) and the novelty of stimuli (time and repetition of awards) to interestingly form divergent (downward versus upward) yet theoretically explicable curvilinear trajectories of contribution. This study contributes to IS literature on virtual communities and social-cognitive literature on work motivation and offers insights to community managers to design better incentive systems. Abstract: Social media plays an important part in the digital transformation of businesses. This research provides a comprehensive analysis of the use of social media by business-to-business (B2B) companies. The current study focuses on the number of aspects of social media such as the effect of social media, social media tools, social media use, adoption of social media use and its barriers, social media strategies, and measuring the effectiveness of use of social media. This research provides a valuable synthesis of the relevant literature on social media in B2B context by analysing, performing weight analysis and discussing the key findings from existing research on social media. Abstract: Misinterpretations and faulty use of Software Development Method (SDM) practices and principles are identified pitfalls in Software Development (SD). Previous research indicates cases with method adoption and use failures; one reason could be the SDM Cargo Cult (CC) behavior, where SD organizations claim to be agile but not doing agile. Previous research has suggested the SDM CC framework as an analytical tool. The aim of this paper is to refine the SDM CC framework and empirically test this version of the framework. We use data from an ethnographical study on three SD teams’ Daily Scrum Meetings (DSM). The empirical material was collected through observations, interviews, and the organization’s business documents. We uncovered twelve CC situations in the SD teams’ use of the DSM practice, structured into seven categories of SDM deviations: bringing irrelevant information, canceling meetings, disturbing the team, receiving unclear information, bringing new requirements, problem-solving, and task distribution. Abstract: Gamification utilizes game-like features to engage participants, widely implemented in a variety of contexts. Such an IT-enabled engagement strategy serves as a marketing device to boost sales and customer loyalty. This study focuses on two significant game elements (i.e., badges and leaderboards) that promote consumer motivations and social comparisons. To qualify the impacts, we conduct a randomized field experiment at one of the largest shopping malls in Asia. In the experiment, we contrast the two elements against coupons regarding various shopping outcomes. A two-period design (consisting of the treatment and posttreatment periods) identifies the long-term behavior changes after the treatment removals. The main results suggest that badging and leaderboarding promote sales by 21.5% and 22.5% in the treatment period, respectively, whereas couponing delivers a more potent effect of 31.7%. In the posttreatment period, the gamification impacts remain significant compared with the baseline, but the influence of couponing fades out. Besides, the additional analyses document the salient heterogeneous treatment effects across demographics. We further discover the substantial differences in the within-group heterogeneity across the treatments. Specifically, badging is a balanced tool for attracting the general public, whereas leaderboarding is a double-edged sword that could encourage self-reinforcing or self-banishing. Finally, gamification brings more explorations that lead to additional sales and engagements. Abstract: Social media has emerged as an essential venue to invigorate online political engagement. However, political engagement is multifaceted and impacted by both individuals' selfmotivation and social influence from peers and remains challenging to model in a counterparty network. Therefore, we propose a counter-party graph representation learning model to study individuals' intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for online political engagement. Firstly, we capture users' intrinsic political interests providing self-motivation from a user-topic network. Then, we encode how users cast influence on others from the inner-/counter-party through a user-user network. With the learned embedding of intrinsic and extrinsic motivations, we model the interactions between these two facets and utilize the dependency by deep sequential model decoding. Finally, extensive experiments using Twitter data related to the 2020 U.S. presidential election and the 2019 HK protests validate the model's predictive power. This study has implications for online political engagement, political participation, and political polarization. Collapse

Abstract: Within the context of multiplayer online battle arena video games (MOBAs) toxic behavior (TB) remains a complex and yet unsolved socio-technological challenge. While significant work has been done recently, there is a lack of theory-guided approaches for curbing TB. In this work, we test the motivational theory of basic desires for explaining the occurrence of TB. For this, we used a survey approach and collected a sample consisting of players of the successful MOBAs League of Legends and Dota 2 (n = 308). Using a PCA, results indicate two underlying factors of the 16 basic desires (i.e., physiological and social factors). Consequently, both factors hold the potential to explain TB. In addition, the predisposition age showed a significant influence on TB in our sample. These findings highlight the 16 basic desires as a promising frame for understanding the antecedents of TB. Abstract: The integration of external data offers enormous potential for new and expanded value propositions for companies. Despite this potential, organizations often hesitate to share data due to the anticipated negative consequences. This study delves into the decision-making process of organizations regarding data sharing within an ecosystem and explores strategies to motivate other organizations to share data. By combining privacy calculus and ecosystems theory, we employ a qualitative case study approach to examine the German orthopedic market. Our findings reveal three risks (weakening one's position in the ecosystem, IT alignment investments, and penalties for data protection violations) and three benefits (increased value creation for the ecosystem, competitive advantage over other ecosystems, and gaining additional transactions) that organizations perceive when contemplating data sharing. Moreover, we identify three strategies for obtaining data from other organizations: mitigating the risks, emphasizing the benefits, and bypassing the calculus. Collapse

Abstract: Extra-role security behavior has been recognized as a salient element of information security. Drawing upon the research on proactivity in the management literature, we identify ‘felt responsibility for constructive change’ (FRCC) as an important proactive motivational state that drives the behavior. We then follow proactive motivation theory and seek the contextual element and individual difference that precede FRCC. Based on buy-in theory, we propose that user participation in the development of information security-related activities and artifacts induces FRCC. To balance context specificity with generality, we model the individual difference of proactive personality as a moderator of this relation. Our model expands the scope of studying behavioral security by addressing users’ proactive involvement in protecting organizations’ information assets, as opposed to only examining reactive and passive user involvement. Further, the model extends the literature by addressing how promoting positive pre-kinetic events serves organizational information security. Collapse

Abstract: The antecedents of employees’ cyberloafing (internet use for nonwork purposes during office hours) have become a burgeoning research topic. This research therefore explores how and when participative leadership serves as an important antecedent to employees’ cyberloafing. Drawing upon self-concept-based theory, we hypothesize that participative leadership can reduce the cyberloafing of employees with a high need for power by increasing their organization-based self-esteem (OBSE). Analyzing survey data from 212 employee-coworker dyads, we have found that participative leadership is positively related to employees’ OBSE, which, in turn, is negatively related to employees’ cyberloafing. Moreover, employees’ need for power strengthens the relationship between participative leadership and employees’ OBSE as well as the indirect relationship between participative leadership and employees’ cyberloafing through their OBSE. These relationships are significant (versus nonsignificant) when employees’ need for power is high (versus low). Accordingly, this research identifies a novel predictor of employees’ cyberloafing and offers insights for organizational leaders aiming to manage employees’ cyberloafing wisely. Collapse
