Abstract: This study delves into how employee proactiveness on enterprise social media can influence social outcomes at work, both positively and negatively. Drawing on social network and social exchange theories, we develop a model to understand how virtual proactiveness is perceived by leaders and coworkers. Using a round-robin design, we collected data from 281 respondents in 56 teams across three waves. The results show that affili­ ative and challenging proactiveness positively relate to leader-member and team-member exchanges. However, challenging proactiveness negatively affects team-member exchange, potentially leading to coworker envy. These findings shed light on the intricate social dynamics in remote working environments. Collapse

Abstract: Recent developments in information and communication technology have blurred the line between the workplace and the home. This can have a negative influence on employees' well-being and thus has gained increasing attention from academics and practitioners. In this study, we developed a research model based on the transactional perspective of stress and the challenge–hindrance stressor framework. We defined the two dimensions of work–family conflict as the perceptual stress resulting from a chronic challenge and hindrance technostressors, which ultimately affect employees' satisfaction in both the work and family domains. We tested our model using a three-wave time-lagged survey study with data collected from 268 employees. Challenge and hindrance technostressors had different effects on these two main forms of work–family conflict (time-based and strain-based) but further induced negative effects on both job and family satisfaction. Overall, we make both scientific and practical contributions to the fields of work-related technology use and work–family conflict. Collapse

Abstract: This paper examines how individual security inputs i.e., security compliance intention and perceived security knowledge, are processed to produce workgroup information security effectiveness in the workgroup. Based on the input-process-output framework, we investigate the multi-level relationships between focal variables. For the analysis, multi-level structural equation model will be used. In particular, the study potentially contributes to the understanding of the security management by showing how individual compliance intention can be mediated by security knowledge coordination and how this mediation works conditionally based on empowering security leadership and perceived security knowledge. Abstract: Members of global teams are often dispersed across time zones. This paper introduces the construct of temporal brokerage, which we define as being in a position within a team’s temporal structure that bridges subgroups that have little or no temporal overlap with each other. Although temporal brokerage is not a formal role, we argue that occupying such a position makes an individual more likely to take on more coordination work than other members on the team. We suggest that, while engaging in such coordination work has advantages in the form of enhanced integrative complexity, it also comes with costs in the form of a greater workload relative to other members. We further argue that the increased integrative complexity and workload that result from occupying a position of temporal brokerage have implications that go beyond the boundaries of the focal team, spilling over into other projects the individual is engaged in. Specifically, we predict that being in positions of temporal brokerage on global teams decreases the quantity but increases the quality of an individual’s total productive output. We find support for these predictions across two studies comprising 4,553 individuals participating in global student project teams and 123,586 individuals participating in global academic research teams, respectively. The framework and findings presented in this paper contribute to theories of global teamwork, pivotal roles and leadership emergence in global teams, and social network theory. Collapse

Abstract: This study sheds light on how role stressors influence employee creativity by jointly exploring the mediating mechanism and contextual factors affecting these relationships. Drawing from the transactional theory of stress, we consider job satisfaction to be a mediator that represents employees’ attitudinal responses to stressors. We also consider social media use within teams to be a moderator that affects employees’ stress appraisal. Specif­ ically, we distinguish between task- and relationship-oriented social media use. We propose a multilevel moderated mediation model to depict the nomological network. Results of a survey of 359 employees in 56 organizational teams suggest that two social media usage patterns differentially moderate the relationships between role stressors and job satisfaction as well as the indirect relationships between role stressors and employee creativity through job satisfaction. Abstract: Despite participating in a growing number of tournaments, but can e-sports players continuously learn and improve? This question is deeply connected with experiential learning theory since players could acquire experience through repetitive participation but with increasingly smaller marginal returns. Observational learning is touted as a complementary learning mechanism by drawing on external sources of knowledge (or others) to accelerate learning progress. This study hence advances a dynamic and integrated research model that scrutinizes the moderating influence of peer-and rivalbased observational learning on the relationship between experiential learning and team performance. Analyzing data gathered on 8,410 teams and 29,078 players in e-Sports games, we reveal that peer-based observational learning attenuates the negative effect of experiential learning on players' incremental absorptive capacity, whereas rival-based observational learning reinforces the negative relationship between experiential learning and players' incremental absorptive capacity. Players' incremental absorptive capacity, in turn, enhances team performance. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations maintain their desired level of cybersecurity by evaluating the information security (ISec) effectiveness of their organizational units. Numerous ISec studies have delved into examining individual compliance, yet studies that develop an understanding about achieving the desired effect of the workgroup ISec have been scarce in the literature. Against this backdrop, this research note draws on the input–process– output framework to take a multilevel approach and examines how an individual security factor (“individual self-efficacy”) and two core workgroup mechanisms (“workgroup collective efficacy”and “security knowledge coordination”) can together affect workgroup information security effectiveness (WISE). Using a survey, data for the independent variables of the study was collected from 68 branch offices (with 536 employees in total) of a law enforcement agency in South Korea. Separately, for WISE, we obtained the branch offices’ annual security assessment scores from the organization. The results reveal the cross-level nature of WISE, suggesting that group mechanisms significantly mediate the relationship between individual self-efficacy and WISE. The results support the view that group mechanisms are important in ISec management and need to be considered alongside the individual-level analysis in the pursuit of workgroup ISec performance. The findings provide insightful implications for both theory and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Impressions at first glance matter in the digital world in that they could lead to lasting impact on credibility perceptions, usage intention, and user satisfaction. Past studies have found that much of impression formation is affected by visual design-related features. Despite its importance, little is known of how different forms of visual aesthetics (i.e., classical vs. expressive aesthetics) influence web page impression formation. Drawing on impression formation literature and cue utilization theory, we formulate a theoretical model of web page impression formation with a temporal sequence of processing stages: automatic processing, initial perception confirmation, and impression formation, which in turn affects approach-avoidance tendency. We conduct two within-subject studies to collect both self-reported and eye movement data to test our predictions. Using real-world web pages as stimuli, the first study reveals that people engage in both automatic processing and attentive processing to form web page impressions, and arousal (measured by pupil size) shapes how people allocate attention (measured by peak duration and fixation count) to visual aesthetics. Using web pages with manipulated aesthetics in the second study, we illuminate the theoretical logic of web page impression formation by showing that people first engage in automatic processing and then engage in attentive processing. Both studies provide strong empirical support for the mediating role of arousal on the effects of visual aesthetics on attention allocation. These findings contribute to an initial theoretical understanding of visual aesthetics effects on impression formation in the digital world and provide important implications for website designers. Abstract: Using a multilevel theoretical framework, we investigate the effects of organizational and perceived learning on employees’ systematic problem solving (SPS) that aims to prevent the recurrence of a problem. At the organizational level, we focus on the deliberate learning mechanisms of knowledge articulation (OKA) and knowledge codification (OKC). At the individual level, we focus on the relative perception of the mechanisms of knowledge articulation (PKA) and knowledge codification (PKC). Drawing on both knowledge management and sensemaking literature, we move from learning only captured through organizational mechanisms, which suppose individuals are passively embedded in the organizational context, to learning captured through perceived mechanisms, which suppose individuals take an active part in the learning processes and interpret them differently. We employ multilevel structural equation modeling to test our theoretical framework using survey data from a sample of 383 shop floor employees in 52 plants. To enhance our results, we perform a set of robustness checks that control different specifications of our model and potential endogeneity issues. Our study indicates that OKC affects SPS, while OKA affects OKC. Moreover, results show that both PKA and PKC have strong positive effects on SPS. Our study draws attention to the multilevel role of organizational learning and expands the understanding of the role of problem solving in routine evolution. Abstract: Based on group creativity framework, our research investigates how corporate social responsibility (CSR) promotes innovation of firms by revealing sequential mediating mechanisms of employee’s meaningfulness of work and intrinsic motivation. By applying a multi-level approach, this study examines the internal processes of micro-level variables between two macro-level variables (i.e., CSR and innovation). Utilizing a 3-wave longitudinal data from 4,178 organizational members in 502 branches as well as objective CSR records from one of the largest Korean commercial banks, we found that employee’s meaningfulness of work and intrinsic motivation sequentially mediate the CSR-innovation link. The results suggest that CSR functions as a powerful driver of innovation through enhancing employees’ perceptions and attitudes toward their job. Collapse
