Abstract: With the increasing digitalization of health data, patients need to make informed decisions about the online sharing of their protected health information. This necessitates a robust technical infrastructure that enables patients to self-manage consent and the trusted exchange of this information across sharing entities. Unfortu­ nately, current health information exchange systems in the U.S. are limited in both these regards. While there is recent work on digital patient consent management, there is limited work that provides effective solutions for patient self-management of consent. Further, interoperability issues in the way health information exchanges are currently architected and differences in regulations across localities exacerbate the challenges of consent man­ agement. In this research, we survey potential patients' willingness to self-manage healthcare-related consent. Having established the desire for consent self-management, we propose a solution that enables the seamless sharing of patient consent across different healthcare providers and health information exchanges. Specifically, we use a rigorous design science approach to create a blockchain-based, self-managed patient consent system and we evaluate the design through an instantiated prototype. The results of our study should be useful to researchers in healthcare information management as well as to practitioners designing consent management systems. Our research contributes to design science research with an innovative, rigorously evaluated, design principles-based artifact that addresses a critical problem of sharing protected health information. Abstract: Smart retail stores have been gaining momentum in smart retailing. Instead of relying on in-store staff like traditional counterparts, smart retail stores provide an unmanned environment purely enabled by various in-store smart technologies that support customers throughout the shopping journey. This unstaffed operating model also enables smart retail stores to provide competitive prices by reducing labor costs. However, studies have overemphasized the unique value offered by smart technology but discounted the common value strengthened in smart retail. This study applies the situational factor framework to identify both unique and common factors empowered by smart technology from a comprehensive perspective; then, technology readiness is incorporated to explore consumer purchase intentions in smart retail stores. A total of 283 survey data were collected and analyzed. The main results indicate that most situational factors have a direct effect on purchase intention, and technology readiness enhances the unique situational factors enabled directly by smart technology. Abstract: Extant theory suggests that candidates with an unfocused identity—those spanning different categories—suffer from a valuation penalty because evaluators are confused by their profile and concerned they lack the required skills. We argue that unfocused candidates may be penalized for another reason; they threaten established social boundaries. This happens in contexts where evaluators act as gatekeepers for social entities, such as professions. We test how the penalty applied to unfocused candidates varies in an academic accreditation process, a setting where evaluators decide on admitting candidates to an academic discipline and where candidates’ prior performance is observable. We find using data on the 2012 national scientific qualification in Italian academia that the valuation penalty applied to unfocused (multidisciplinary) candidates was most pronounced for the most high-performing candidates. High-performing yet ill-fitting candidates threaten the distinctiveness and knowledge domain of the discipline and are hence penalized by evaluators. High-performing multidisciplinary candidates suffered the greatest penalty in small and distinctive academic disciplines and when accreditors were highly typical members of their discipline. Our theory and findings suggest that the categorical imperative may be driven not only by cognitive or capability considerations as typically argued in the literature but also, by attempts to maintain social boundaries. Abstract: The advances in digital technologies and improved digital literacy have provided myriads of opportunities for societies. Particularly in the public sphere, improved digitalisation has meant better access to information for citizens, among others. Digital technologies, such as social media, have been proven invaluable in events such as a public health crisis such as COVID-19. However, the adoption of these technologies has also brought challenges related to misinformation, where publicly available information is manipulated and disseminated for purposes that are against the public interest. This paper presents an ongoing empirical study that attempts to explore the measures taken by the public sector to manage misinformation. The study, conducted in two developing countries, explores the immediate and long-term approaches to tackling misinformation. Abstract: Data-driven predictions have become an inseparable part of business decisions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has started helping the product and support teams perform more accurate experiments in various business settings. This study proposes a framework for businesses based on inductive learnings related to success and barriers shared on social media platforms. Our goal is to analyse the signals emerging from these conversational opinions from the early adoption of AI, with a focus towards facilitators and barriers faced by teams. Factors like efficiency, innovation, business research, product novelty, manual intervention, adaptability, emotion, support, personal growth, experiential learning, fear of failure and fear of upgradation have been identified based on an exploratory study and then a confirmatory study. We present the learnings through a roadmap for practitioners. This study contributes to the IS literature by delineating AI as a determinant of success and introduces a lot of organizational factors into the model. Collapse

Abstract: The nursing discipline is increasingly confronted with far-reaching challenges that are a prominent subject in public discourse. Factors such as growing numbers of chronically ill patients and an ongoing decrease in medical personnel impose unprecedented strain on clinical care providers and nurses, which requires high levels of resilience on an individual and organizational level. The introduction of digital information and communication technology (ICT) in the workplace is intended to counteract these challenges and foster resilient everyday care. However, studies that investigate the interplay of digitalization and individual resilience are scarce. Hence, we propose a mixed-method approach to explore how ICT use in a clinical work setting influences nurses' sense of coherence. This construct has been used as a theoretical foundation to investigate resilience in nursing. Further, the exploration of individual coping strategies in the light of ICT-related disturbances in the workplace and associated job-related outcomes complement the research agenda. Collapse

Abstract: We advance a multistakeholder framework that highlights the influence of stakeholders in tempering short-termist responses to capital market pressures. When firms face pressure from short sellers in the capital market, they sometimes shift attention to short-term stock performance and neglect critical investments that pay off in the long run. Relying on a quasi-natural experiment and establishment-level data on workplace injuries, we find that short-selling pressure causes an increase in employee injuries. Critically, however, the degree to which the response is short-termist depends on the salience of multiple stakeholders (analysts, shareholders, employees, and managers). We discuss the implications for understanding firms’ relations with their stakeholders and, particularly, how these stakeholders influence corporate responses to capital market pressures in ways that matter for long-term value creation. This study also contributes to strategy research by highlighting the downside of capital market deregulation. Abstract: The growing intercultural mobility in academia necessitates the culturally-specific design of digital learning artifacts such as Pedagogical Conversational Agents (PCAs). We coded two PCA prototypes and manipulated the variable "power distance" adapted to Chinese versus German (learning) culture. We measured perceived competence, usefulness, identification, social presence, enjoyment, and trust in each PCA among the two groups of German and Chinese university students in an online experiment, ran statistical analyses, and reflected thereupon in a qualitative follow-up workshop. Our findings show significant differences in comparing the measured constructs between the two cultures and PCAs. We essentially demonstrate that German students prefer a PCA as a Learning Companion with a low power distance, strong social bonding, and vivid interactions, while Chinese students ascribe more value to a superior PCA instructor, that emphasizes power distance through structure and high efficiency. We conclusively discuss the need for a more culture-specific and value-driven design of PCAs. Collapse

Abstract: The business value of investments in information technology/information system (IT/IS) has been the subject of active research over several decades. Even though a plethora of similar studies analyzing the impact of promised IT/IS investments on firm performance exists, the results, largely inconclusive, mostly concentrate on the developed countries. In this backdrop, and with an expected manifold rise in IT/IS investments in India in the coming years, an assessment of the relationship between investments and firm performance can be noteworthy. The study explores this important issue by analyzing the impact of IT/IS investments on the firm's performance in India based on data of around 6500 IT/IS investments during 2000-2016. We deploy a series of univariate and multivariate analyses and complement those with several robustness tests. Our principal findings indicate that IT/IS investments on the average in India have been mostly unsuccessful in impacting firm performance positively, in line with "productivity paradox" phenomenon previously documented in the U.S. and other markets. We substantiate our principal results using several robustness tests. We offer several possible explanations of our results spanning across both IS as well as finance literature and discuss the implications of future investment prospects for firms. The results highlight the need for adoption of caution by firms operating in emerging economies like India while considering future IT/IS investment decisions. These suggestions are likely to serve as a good reference point in other emerging economies as well. Collapse

Abstract: Health information exchange (HIE) is vital to improving care delivery and outcomes, and patient consent is an important component of HIE. Existing consent processes that involve completing forms at a provider, along with poor interoperability between HIEs, give patients limited control of their consent management. We developed and deployed a survey to assess how people perceive the value of HIE, the importance of controlling access to their protected health information (PHI), and how they would prefer to manage consent for the exchange of their PHI. Given the option, 70% of the participants would prefer to use a consent application (app) to manage their consent. Based on the current U.S. HIE environment, we argue that the most viable architecture for implementing an HIE consent app would be a permissioned blockchain. We describe and illustrate a consent management app prototype that is blockchain-based as an effective alternative to current HIE consent practices.
