Abstract: This study examines how an interesting technological phenomenon called the "Hashtag Dance Challenge" (HDC), made popular on the short video platform TikTok, may drive artists' popularity on the digital music streaming platform, and, importantly, help women, artists, to achieve traction that is needed to succeed commercially. Using data from TikTok, Spotify, and music analytics companies, we analyze the impact of HDCs on artists' popularity growth rate on Spotify. We find that artists with an HDC-related song achieve a significant daily increase in followership on Spotify, representing traction and appeal within the music industry, relative to similar artists who do not have an HDC. Importantly, the daily growth of Spotify followers increases by approximately 3% more for female artists than male artists, given an HDC-associated song. Our findings shed new light on the role of social media with respect to artist self-promotion, especially in making the music more inclusive and attractive to female music artists. Collapse

Abstract: The ever-increasing complexity of the music industry and the intensified resentment of artists towards collecting societies call for a transformation and a change of behavior within the music ecosystem. This article introduces a hybrid intelligence system, that ameliorates the current situation by combining the intelligence of humans and machines. This study proposes design requirements for hybrid intelligence systems in the music industry. Using a design science research approach, we identify design requirements both inductively from expert interviews and deductively from theory and present a first prototypical instantiation of a respective hybrid intelligence system. Overall, this shall enrich the body of knowledge of hybrid intelligence research by transferring its concepts into a new context. Furthermore, the identified design requirements shall serve as a foundation for researchers and practitioners to further explore and design hybrid intelligence in the music industry and beyond. Abstract: We apply the Zeuthen–Hicks bargaining model in an empirical study of electronic negotiations. Using a typology of bargaining steps based on that model, we study to what extent actual steps conform to the predictions of the model, and the effects of conformity with the model on bargaining outcomes. Results indicate that the model predicts bargaining steps only slightly better than chance, but that steps conforming to the model lead to outcomes that are closer to the efficient frontier, closer to the Nash bargaining solution, and provide higher utility to the party using such steps. Abstract: This paper presents a new conceptualisation of online communities by exploring how an online community forms and is maintained. Many stakeholders in the music industry rightly point out that unauthorised file sharing is illegal, so why do so many people feel it is acceptable to download music without paying? Our study found highly cohesive, well-organised groups that were motivated by scarcity and the lack of high quality music files. Our ethnographic research provides insight into the values and beliefs of music file sharers: their demands are not currently being met. Using Actor-network theory, we are able to propose that the file sharers represent a growing potential market in the music industry and that music distribution systems should be developed accordingly to meet the demands of this user group. Therefore, this study can serve as a springboard for understanding unauthorised file sharing and perhaps other deviant behaviours using technology. Collapse

Abstract: Underground music file sharing communities are online social spaces that facilitate the sharing of mostly unauthorised digital content. This paper proposes underground file sharing communities as subcultures, and explores the Roswell community from theoretical perspectives of group formation and translation from Actor-network theory (ANT) to gain a better understanding of the motivations for file sharing. Through observations and supporting interviews, a detailed discussion of underground file sharing communities is presented. The discussion reveals interesting insights about the ‘black box’ of file sharing, and the ideologies of those involved. Scarcity and quality are strong motivators for engaging in underground file sharing communities, with access to high quality music files and scarce music files being a reward for actively participating. The quality of content is maintained through strict rules for converting and uploading new music. Because underground communities are quite sophisticated, it is argued that it is possible to learn from them and use this knowledge in the development of future online music systems and communities. Abstract: Information systems are changing the way artists and consumers create, use and interact with music. Music experience has become richer and more sophisticated than simply buying and listening to music. New links between IS and music are forging unprecedented levels of creative e-collaboration, innovative music technology development, new music commerce and marketing methods, alongside with the emergence of e-music communities nurturing up-and-coming artists careers. Distinct from non-creative industries, the music industry is at the forefront of technological innovation where the ubiquitous adoption of music downloading, widespread use of personal music systems, and value chain disintermediation has shifted the focus of value delivery towards consumer control. This paper provides new insights into the effect of recent technological change on stakeholders within the music industry value chain, and of music information systems upon creative music products. The paper further explores the stakeholder perceptions of the value added or depleted from music by the technology, and examines the future expectations of information systems amidst the volatility and uncertainty of the music industry. Abstract: Studies of the sources of innovations have recognized that many innovations are developed by users. However, the fact that firms employ communities of users to strengthen their innovation process has not yet received much attention. In online firm-hosted user communities, users freely reveal innovations to a firm's product platform, which can put the firm in a favorable position (a) because these new product features become available to all users through sharing on a user-to-user basis, or (b) because it allows the firm to pick up the innovations and integrate them in future products and then benefit by selling them to all users. We study the key personal attributes of the individuals responsible for innovations, namely the innovative users, to explain creation of value in this organizational context. The main question is why such users contribute to firm-hosted user communities. Analyzing data derived from multiple sources (interviews, a Web-log, and questionnaires), we find that innovative users are likely to be (i) hobbyists, an attribute that can be assumed to (positively) affect innovators' willingness to share innovations, and (ii) responsive to "firm recognition" as a motivating factor for undertaking innovation, which explains their decision to join the firm's domain. In agreement with earlier studies, we also find that innovative users are likely to be "lead users," an attribute that we assume to affect the quality of user innovation. Whether or not a firm-hosted user community can be turned into an asset for the firm is to a great extent conditional on the issues studied in this paper. Collapse

Abstract: Extended Abstract 1Examining the strategy underlying adoption of new information technologies has long been an interesting and challenging research issue. The emergence of the Internet, and the myriad new technologies that it makes possible, increases both the complexity and the importance of this issue. This research focuses on strategic response to threats posed by innovative new technologies adopted as open standards in electronic markets for information goods. Standards have always been important in the development of commercial markets, and are especially so in e-commerce, and many established industry leaders face a difficult challenge in responding appropriately to disruptive shifts in the marketplace, yet the link between these two phenomena has not been examined. This study begins to address the issue of whether the existence of open standards affects the strategic response of industry leaders, and in particular whether it pushes them to more rapidly embrace e-commerce opportunities.
