Abstract: This paper seeks to provide a better understanding of software business providers’ strategy when adapting to the emergence of cloud computing markets. Based on a longitudinal case-study and on a historical content analysis of SAP’s discourse, it highlights four main periods of adaptation, since 2009. The analysis of these four periods emphasizes the existence of an initial superior technology (HANA) on the ERP market when referring to cloud-based solutions. Overall, the evolution of SAP’s strategy is understood as a change from a high level of control over the administration of its technological environment to a more flexible strategy that gives alternative options such as Platform-as-aService (PaaS) and Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) mode. Content analysis shows that SAP’s discourse gives an increasing importance to agreements with third parties in order to mitigate the perception of the perceived lock-in effect. Collapse

Abstract: The use of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems to deploy the panoptic gaze remains unresearched in the UK. Though there are studies outside the UK which use panoptic theory to investigate ERP systems, they do not analyse the influence the interaction between ERP technology and organisational culture have on the development of the panoptic gaze. The aim emerging from these issues was to understand whether ERP technology, organisational culture, or a combination of both could support development of the panoptic gaze in an organisation from the UK. The method selected was a qualitative case study of a UK organisation’s finance division, and the techniques used were semi-structured interviews and observations. The study suggests the ERP technology provided an infrastructure from which the panoptic gaze could be deployed. It was not deployed in this instance however, as the finance division’s culture did not emphasise workforce surveillance. The study therefore suggests that in addition to ERP technology a culture emphasising workforce surveillance was needed to develop the panoptic gaze. The findings support the social shaping concept as it was the finance division’s cultural context that influenced whether the ERP technology would be used to deploy the panoptic gaze. Collapse

Abstract: Why do some information technology innovations come to be adopted widely while others do not? One promising research stream has begun to investigate how institutional factors shape the diffusion of IT innovations. Here we examine how these institutional factors themselves are shaped. Specifically, we explore how interested actors termed institutional entrepreneurs develop institutional arrangements to launch an IT innovation toward widespread adoption. Undertaking a contemporary case study of a new class of enterprise software, professional services automation (PSA), we found that to launch PSA, institutional entrepreneurs sought to mobilize an organizational community by developing and recognizing leaders and facilitating members’ focus on PSA. They further struggled to legitimate PSA by developing a coherent organizing vision that incorporated compelling success stories. We tie these findings together in a model that usefully shifts the focus of IT innovation research from assessing institutional effects to understanding institution-building. This new focus suggests an alternative IT diffusion theory with several practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: Enterprise portals (EPs) aim at creating a single entry point for its users to all internal and external applications, information, and services necessary for performing their jobs. EPs can be personalized to users depending on the roles they perform. There is a growing interest in EPs, but they have not been researched. Using an artifact-evaluating approach we evaluate one specific EP--SAP AG’s Enterprise Portal mySAP Workplace. The evaluation had an overall effectiveness approach due to the nature of the underlying application, i.e. SAP R/3, and the competing values model, developed by Robert Quinn and associates, was used as the evaluation model. The evaluation suggests some of the strengths of current EPs, for example, their internal and control focuses, and some of their weaknesses, for example, lack of external focus and lack of support for top-managers. Abstract: Requirements Engineering for Enterprise Systems can be differentiated in developing and configuring these comprehensive solutions. This paper focuses on the system configuration. This process is supported by implementation tools, which guide the project team through the system individualization. A main activity within this process is the configuration of reference models, which support the specification of requirements related to Enterprise Systems. Enterprise Systems reference models, however, do not depict the actual configuration potential of the system, but rather describe the complete system functionality and structure. This paper suggests modifications of reference modeling techniques for Enterprise Systems. These extensions allow the exact specification of configuration opportunities. Thus, they facilitate the use of conceptual models for all stages of an Enterprise System lifecycle.
