Abstract: Organizations today leverage big data analytics combined with modern information and communication technology (ICT) to control workers in a largely automated manner. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as algorithmic control (AC). Research has shown that worker perceptions of AC applications can impact critical outcomes such as worker resistance, continuance intention, and well-being. Despite recent efforts to better understand these worker-level effects of AC, no systematic measures of workers' perceptions of AC exist to date. In this study, we develop and present a scale to empirically measure AC at the worker level. In particular, following established scale development guidelines, we conceptualize AC in terms of seven distinct forms, and derive, evaluate, and validate a final set of 33 measurement items. In doing so, our study paves the way for a much-needed, more systematic investigation of AC and its worker-level implications. Collapse

Abstract: The debate on the pros and cons of employee attachment to social networking sites (SNS) has led to social media policy paralysis in many organizations, and often a prohibition on employee use of SNS. This paper examines corporate users’ attachment to SNS. An analysis of 316 survey responses showed that corporate users’ socialization in large public SNS was steeped in perceived work-related benefits, which in turn nourished their SNS attachment. Social use outperformed informational use in generating perceived work-related benefits from SNS. Weak ties in large heterogeneous networks resulted in strategic and operational benefits, whereas the effects of strong bonding in homogenous networks were limited to operational benefits. The paper contributes to research on SNS use by corporate users and the debate on the effect of SNS use for work. The findings will benefit SNS strategists of organizations and policymakers to exploit the benefit potential of public SNS. Collapse

Abstract: Media capabilities influence consumers' trust in online exchanges. However, in the sharing economy, where consumers interact with service providers through a platform, conventional models of trust must be revisited. Our research identifies how media synchronicity and anonymity influence the relative importance of institution-based trust in sharing economy exchanges. We collected data from 248 ride-hailing customers and 288 cryptocurrency users to test a moderated mediation model of trust. We find that in the sharing economy media synchronicity and anonymity lead customers to develop trust toward service providers directly and undermine the impact of institutional trust mechanisms. This indicates that in sharing economy exchanges, trust can be built directly with the service provider, or alternatively, indirectly through the platform. Consequently, organizations in the sharing economy can strategically design their systems to engender trust by choosing between (1) emphasizing the platform's reputation or (2) encouraging direct communication between the consumer and service providers. Abstract: Computation is critical to social development for information processing in today's digital world. Computational Thinking (CT), the underlying cognitive functioning of designing computation, has been under heated discussion. However, the conceptualization of CT and its measurements still require improvement when discussing CT as a competence for problem-solving. This study first conceptualizes CT in problemsolving context by identifying the framework of competence based on a tripartite view and applying it to clarify that CT competence consists of CT knowledge, skills, and attitudes. It then aims to develop a self-reported scale for complementing CT measurements based on the tripartite view. This work contributes to CT theories and measures through a more precise conceptual framework and an instrument developed based on it. It enriches IS studies by a new perspective that humans form their cognitive process for problem-solving under digital technologies, especially computational tools. Collapse

Abstract: Most of the information security management research involving fear appeals is guided by either protection motivation theory or the extended parallel processing model. Over time, extant research has extended these theories, as well as their derivative theories, in a variety of ways, leading to several theoretical and empirical inconsistencies. The large body of fragmented, and sometimes conflicting, research has muddied the broader understanding of what drives protection- and defensive motivation. We provide guidance to the security discourse by offering the first study in the literature to employ two-stage meta-analytic structural equation modeling (TSSEM), which combines covariance-based structural equation modeling and meta-analysis. Information systems (IS) researchers have traditionally used meta-analysis for structural equation modeling for such purposes—an approach that has several serious statistical flaws. Using 341 systematically selected empirical security articles (representing 383 unique studies) and TSSEM, we pool a large series of five datasets to test six models, from which we examine the effects of constructs and paths in the security fear-appeals literature. We compare and test six versions of models inspired by issues in the broader fear-appeals literature. We confirm the importance of both the threat- and coping-appraisal processes; establish the central role of fear and that it has greater importance than threat; show that efficacy is a stronger predictor of protection motivation than is threat; demonstrate that response costs as currently measured are ineffective but that maladaptive rewards have a strong negative effect on protection motivation and a positive effect on defensive motivation; and provide evidence that dual models of danger control and fear control should be used. Abstract: Although organizational factors related to big data analytics (BDA) and its performance have been studied extensively, the number of failed BDA projects continues to rise. The quality of BDA information is a commonly cited factor in explanations for such failures and could prove key to improving project performance. Using the resource-based view (RBV) lens, data analytics literature, business strategy control, and an empirical setup of two studies based on marketing and information technology managerial data, we draw on the dimensions of the balanced scorecard (BSC) as an integrating framework of BDA organizational factors. Specifically, we tested a model –from two different perspectives– that would explain information quality through analytical talent and organizations’ data plan alignment. Results showed that both managers have a different understanding of what information quality is. The characteristics that make marketing a better informer of information quality are identified. In addition, hybrid (embedded) type analyst placements are seen to achieve better performance. Moreover, we add greater theoretical rigour by incorporating the moderating effect of the use of big data ana­ lytics in companies. Finally, the BSC provided a greater causal understanding of the resources and capabilities within a data strategy. Collapse

Abstract: Due to their constant interactions with IT, users accumulate beliefs they hold toward their selves as IT users. Given the ambivalent nature of IT, individuals may develop ambiguous and incoherent beliefs toward their selves as IT users. This can lead users to limit the efficacy of their interactions with IT and negatively affect their overall perception of themselves. This paper conceptualizes the IT Self-Concept Clarity (ITSCC) construct to improve the predictive power of models interested in the users' daily interaction with IT. We also develop a measurement scale for ITSCC. We validate the scale by performing three activities. We perform a pre-test, a cross-sectional survey study and an experimental manipulation study. We outline the relationship between ITSCC and computer self-efficacy and selfesteem. We also validate the effect of the experimental manipulation on our scale, which will allow assessing the causal impact of ITSCC in future studies. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the dominance of customer co-creation experience value (CCEV) in the value co-creation research, its theoretical domain has not been systematically analysed and developed. Specifically, little is known about the nature of social media-enabled CCEV. To address the knowledge gaps, this study employs a five-step procedure to develop a conceptualisation and instrument of CCEV construct in a social media context. First, drawing on the relevant literature, we determine the conceptual framework, definition, and assumptions of CCEV. Second, we employ grounded theory methodology to analyse customer review data from three representative social media sites and identify the dimensions of CCEV (four themes consisting of 10 dimensions). Third, we create an item pool of CCEV based on the prior work and in-depth interviews of 10 customers. In the fourth and fifth steps, we collect three waves of quantitative data to develop and validate the instrument including item refinement (n1 = 234), instrument validation (n2 = 521), and nomological validity examination (n3 = 615). The results indicate that the instrument exhibits satisfactory reliability and validity. Our work contributes to theory and practice by presenting a context-specific and fine-grained conceptualisation of CCEV and a reliable and valid survey instrument. Collapse
