Abstract: We draw on the attention-based view of the firm to examine whether and when the presence of a CIO in the TMT has a positive effect on both firms' ideated digital innovation (IDI) (i.e., the intensity of firms' digital patenting activity) and commercialized digital innovation (CDI) (i.e., the digital sophistication of firms' new products). Building on the idea that attention processes are context dependent, we also explore the moderating roles of CEO characteristics (IT background and role tenure) as well as environmental characteristics (the industry's IT attention). We analyze data from a cross-industry panel of U.S. S&P 500 firms over eight years that includes up to 2,852 firm-year observations. The results indicate that CIO presence in the TMT is positively related to a firm's IDI and CDI. Furthermore, they show that the organizational context related to CEO characteristics moderates the CIO-CDI relationship and that the environmental context related to the industry's IT attention moderates the CIO-IDI relationship. Our research contributes to the information systems literature by providing robust evidence that CIO presence in the TMT positively influences a firm's digital innovation outcomes, showing how internal and external boundary conditions affect the work of CIOs, and elaborating the role of managerial attention as an underlying mechanism explaining digital innovation. Abstract: The proliferation of variable renewable energy increases the significance of reserve markets, which provide energy flexibility to compensate for supply–demand mismatches on short notice. Accordingly, market regulators in different locations have been continuously adopting different mechanisms to attract flexible sources, such as batteries to participate in reserve markets. While these mechanisms are different and sometimes contradictory, there is no consensus on their effectiveness. Therefore, there is a dire need to examine their effectiveness systematically. This paper proposes a model-driven decision support system, focusing on regulators’ perspectives, assisting them in evaluating the effectiveness of different market mechanisms for attracting batteries in reserve electricity markets. We formulate the problem as a stochastic Mixed-IntegerLinear-Program, incorporating practical restrictions and applicable to many electricity markets. As an example, we apply our model to the case of the German electricity market to evaluate some market mechanisms. We find that although some reserve markets do not allow separate bidding in charging and discharging directions (asymmetric bidding), this seems to be an effective mechanism to attract battery operators. When asymmetric bidding is allowed, battery operators often optimally choose to reserve their capacity only in the charging direction and use the discharging direction in energy markets, taking opposite seller/buyer roles in energy and reserve markets. Our results also advocate mechanisms such as remunerating the activated energy and shifting the gate closure closer to the time of operation. In contrast, some existing rewarding mechanisms designed for flexible resources do not seem to be very effective. Collapse

Abstract: To comply with sustainability goals, many companies buy green energy to serve their energy demand. This is typically done by engaging in bilateral power purchase agreements (PPA) with renewable energy producers (REP). A PPA can be flexibly structured, but the core principle is that a buyer (company) agrees to buy future energy production of a seller (REP) at an agreed-upon fixed price. PPAs are financially attractive for sellers, providing price certainty, unlike trading in electricity markets. However, PPAs can bring quantity uncertainty for buyers due to the uncertainty of future green energy delivery. This uncertainty in the long-term endangers sustainability targets, and in the short-term complicates reliable and cost-efficient demand matching. Thus, multiple strategies have been used in PPAs to encourage sellers to provide accurate and good-faith predictions of their short-term and longer-term future production. Yet, it has been shown that REPs can have incentives to misreport predicted values. This has discouraged some companies from engaging in PPAs. In this paper, we first investigate how PPA structure and pricing can incentivize REPs to provide more reliable predictions. This shifts the risk of production uncertainty to REPs, increasing the chance that REPs adopt batteries. We further study how having batteries for REPs affects their own revenue as well as the reliability of their energy predictions for buyers. We use analytical and simulation approaches to propose a decision tree for a win-win PPA structure, which improves reliability for buyers while maintaining profitability for REPs. Collapse

Abstract: The use of outcome-contingent payments is a common approach when evaluating and rewarding forecasters. But since realized outcomes are only determined in the future, outcome-contingent payments naturally lead to trust issues in that a forecaster must trust the forecast requester to make a payment after a forecast has been reported. This scenario is even worse in online crowdsourcing settings where conventional labor and contract laws are weak. In this paper, we suggest a blockchain-based system to reward online forecasters that alleviates the above trust issue and further brings transparency to the forecast evaluation process. In particular, through the use of smart contracts, our proposed system behaves as an escrow account mediating the interactions between forecasters and requesters. Abstract: Security research recognizes the effect of “being seen” in reducing the likelihood of security violations in the workplace. This has typically been construed in the context of formal monitoring processes by employers, but there is an emerging notion that workers care about what their workplace colleagues think of them and their activities. We leverage this idea of the “Eyes of Others” in motivating pro-security behaviors to apply to security contexts. We find that, for a set of worker self-perceptions including Morality and Self-Consciousness, the likelihood of engaging in mundane workplace security violations is impacted by the knowledge that coworkers are watching. This has important implications for novel expansions of deterrence research in IS Security, going forward. Collapse

Abstract: With the popularity of social media and mobile device, vendors have more distribution channels for digital coupons than ever before. However, coupon redemption rates are unacceptable to venders. The important factor driving coupon receivers to redeem mobile coupons is an understanding of them. The purpose of this study is to propose a new social coupon endorsing mechanism, which aims to identify those endorsers who have coupon proneness and a high sharing willingness for coupon diffusion, with a recommended list of coupon receivers. Our experimental results show that our proposed mechanism effectively propagates mobile coupon or discount information by helping consumers to more efficiently gather coupons which fit their preferences and location, and to save money. It also helps vendors propagate mobile coupons to the target consumers in an efficient way. Collapse

Abstract: While integration of higher shares of renewable energy sources in the power industry portfolio improves sustainability, it introduces more uncertainty to the electricity markets. The uncertainty and variability of renewables escalates the need for cost-effective ways to balance supply and demand in real-time. Energy storage systems are considered a viable solution to hedge against the intermittency of supply. However, most prior studies suggest marginal or even negative profitability of batteries when participating in one stage of the electricity market. Given the physical characteristics of batteries which make it suitable for in multiple market stages, we investigate the profitability of batteries when simultaneously participating in the spot (day-ahead) and real-time (balancing) markets. We formulate a stochastic programming framework to choose optimal market position, optimal bidding strategy, and optimal capacity split between the two markets. Our results show that participation of batteries in multiple stages of the electricity markets generates additional profit for the battery. The optimal strategy is to participate in the spot market with full capacity as a seller and with full capacity in the real-time market (for down-regulation) as a buyer. Collapse

Abstract: Microgrids are decentralized distribution networks that integrate distributed energy resources and balance energy generation and loads locally. The introduction of microgrids can help overcome the challenges of global energy systems. Despite this potential, the information systems domain has seen limited research on microgrids. This paper synthesizes research on elements of microgrids for electric energy. Interviewed experts maintain that technological microgrid solutions have been solidly developed; nevertheless, the lack of economic and business consideration is stalling their deployment. The authors argue that business and information systems engineering research can provide integrated perspectives that connect technology and markets. Consequently, the authors derive a framework from an extensive interdisciplinary literature review that structures the academic state of the art on microgrid design and could guide associated information systems research. The framework comprises four layers: energy technology and infrastructure, information and communication infrastructure, application systems, and governance. The authors evaluate the framework in interviews with 15 experts from industry and three from academia. Their feedback allows to iteratively refine the framework and point out research directions on microgrids in business and information systems engineering. Collapse
