Abstract: Technical debt (TD) is a technical compromise wherein the ability to maintain information technology (IT) applications over the long term is sacrificed for short-term goals. TD occurs when software development teams undergo constant pressure to release applications swiftly, on a tight schedule. The accumulation of TD, which often leads to a significant cost surplus, presents a ubiquitous challenge in technology-driven organisations. To keep TD levels under control, many organisations implement top-down mechanisms that impose enterprise-wide principles on software development teams. This clinical research presents a complementary but distinct approach to managing TD. A digital nudge was introduced at Credit Suisse, a global financial services company, to help raise awareness and understanding, and stimulate actions related to TD decision-making in software development teams. This paper reports on the nudge’s clinical design, implementation, impact, and evaluation. As the nudge was effective in reducing TD in IT applications after one year of use, we demonstrate that digital nudges are viable means for guiding collective decisions in complex decision environments like that of TD management. Our findings have several implications for research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: AI methods allow for a multitude of new forms of managerial control. One is algorithmic nudging, in which organizations use AI methods to control workers through targeted recommendations. Drawing upon Michel Foucault’s analytical strategies, the paper examines the intellectual heritage and ideological roots of AI-nudges. Scholars have commented on the resemblance between algorithmic nudging and Taylorist scientific management. However, as this paper shows the discourse of AI-nudges also shares significant linages with other subsequent opposing managerial paradigms. Building on the analysis of AI-nudges linages, the paper discusses how their use implies three contestable presumptions 1) that work can be codified, 2) that workers require autonomy over their work, and 3) that there is no existing conflict of interest between workers and the organization. Abstract: We explore how eLearners' engagement and performance can be influenced by digital nudges. We examine how personalized nudges with self-reference content and social comparison content encourage eLearners' engagement and performance. We perform an experiment with 515 students in a hybrid undergraduate course, randomly assigning participants to receive one of five types of digital nudges for certain course assignments. We examine how these nudges affect proactive assignment activity, assignment performance, as well as self-reported motivation, self-comparisons and perceived usefulness of nudges. We will model between-group differences and pre-post differences to examine the effect of personalized nudges on user engagement and performance, comparing participants who received different types of personalized nudges with participants who received generic (i.e. non-personalized) nudges. Our study extends existing nudge research to user engagement in eLearning environments. We also contribute to theories of self-reference, social norms, and social comparison on personalization of the learning process through digital nudges. Collapse

Abstract: Advanced technologies are introduced in warehouse operations, rendering the interplay between human worker behavior and information systems (IS) a critical issue. We investigate how IS supports manual order picking by studying how visual color-coding information on picking locations provided through personal digital assistants accelerates search and picking tasks. Considering real-world data on a storage system where 20 dissimilar items are stored together at one picking location, we apply a log-logistic accelerated failure time model with N=112,672 picks performed by N=190 workers and find that color-coding accelerates the picking process by up to 17.28%. To increase the internal validity of our field-based examination, we conduct one VR experiment (N=29 participants) providing evidence for an acceleration of 23.74%, and one online experiment (N=178 participants) indicating an acceleration of 24.29%. Based on an innovative method of triangulation, we demonstrate how IS can influence picker behavior and discuss how to better design IT artifacts. Collapse

Abstract: We propose a hybrid intelligence socio-technical artifact that identifies a threshold where the chatbot requires human intervention in order to continue to perform at an appropriate level to achieve the predefined objective of the system. Abstract: Coronary heart disease (CHD) afflicts 16.5 million Americans annually and is one of the most prominent causes of death and disability. Lack of access to rehabilitation presents a huge challenge in the management of this disease. In this study, we test the efficacy of a mobile phone-based intervention for home-based cardiac rehabilitation for patients with CHD. Our digital health intervention prototype deployed ecological momentary assessment (EMA) surveys and preprogrammed intervention messages to improve the physical activity performance of CHD patients. Extending control theory and the theory of cognitive dissonance to digital nudges, we formulated hypotheses, that we tested using panel data from eight CHD patients over a period of 91 days. Out analysis showed that EMA surveys independently as well as in conjugation with preprogrammed intervention messages can work as a digital nudge and motivate physical activity among CHD patients. Abstract: Channel-switching, cross-channel free-riding, and research shopping is causing problems for companies offering multiple channels. Either customers could choose a channel that is more expensive for the company or they inform themselves in one channel but switch to a competitor for the final purchase. We aim to influence channel choice by using the recently proposed IS concept of digital nudging. In particular, we leverage the nudges of social norms and perceived risk in the online channel. In addition to this concept, we propose that the individual context of the user, like gender or personality, has to be incorporated as a moderator by designing customer specific (i.e. adaptive) nudges. To test these hypotheses, we outline an experiment design for a lab experiment and show how multi-channel choices can be influenced with design interventions in the form of nudges. As previous studies have only tested static nudges, we contribute to existing research by enhancing the nudge theory to adaptively consider user characteristics. Moreover, we apply the nudge theory to the new context of multi-channel choices. Finally, we provide guidance for practitioners on designing their own online channels. Collapse
