Abstract: Research has demonstrated that student help-seeking behaviors have a variety of positive influences in the classroom. However, the primary outcome of these studies is typically student grades and general selfefficacy. To make a contribution to the IS discipline, we expand this research with a more targeted and specific measure of self-efficacy that was created for IS students: creative self-efficacy (CreaSE) in the IS discipline. This allows us to relate specific help-seeking behaviors to CreaSE sub-constructs which, in turn, allows us to make more targeted recommendations to instructors in IS programs who want to improve the quality and retention of their students. Abstract: The coronavirus disease of 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has required many educators to redesign how they deliver their courses. In this study, we develop innovative procedures and pedagogy to teach pair programming via Zoom breakout rooms in a cloud environment. We report six fundamental innovative teaching mechanisms and procedures: 1) strategically planning a course, 2) effectively managing teaching resources, 3) enhancing faculty responsiveness, 4) selecting reliable technology, 5) mandating online educator's training, and 6) accommodating students with learning disabilities. From teaching pair programming via Zoom breakout rooms, we have gained valuable experience in promoting collaborative, engaging, active, and problem-based learning activities in a cloud environment. Our results enrich our knowledge of delivering online education and contribute to pair programming literature in general.Ling Li is the Chair of the Department of Information Technology and Decision Sciences at Old Dominion University, USA. She is eminent scholar and university professor. She has published over 140 peerrefereed research papers in high-quality journals. Her research is motivated by theoretical and practical explanations of how organizations can best deploy their technology and supply chain strategies for competitive advantage. She serves as area editor, associate editor and editorial board member of several journals. systems. She examines systems of inequality for students at-risk; namely those who live in poverty, make residential moves, have disabilities, attend schools with fewer resources, take developmental education courses and live in less traditional family structures. Recently she has been engaged in research that spans multiple countries to determine if patterns stemming from systems of inequality are similar in varying contexts.Silvana M. R. Watson is a professor of special education at Old Dominion University. Her research interests focus on 1) promoting evidence-based practices for students with learning disabilities, attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, and English learners with and without disabilities; 2) teacher preparation; and 3) examining the nature of students' learning difficulties. Her has disseminated her work through presentations at international, national, and state professional conferences, peer-reviewed publications, book chapters, other academic publications, and consultations with educational agencies. She is one of the co-PIs of the National Science Foundation's grant awarded to Old Dominion to support the investigation of pair programming as a teaching method to support undergraduate students with learning disabilities taking instructional technology courses. She has been awarded a large grant from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of English Language Acquisition, to assess and instruct English learners with and without disabilities. Debra A. Major is a professor and eminent scholar in the College of Sciences at Old Dominion University, USA. Her professional specialty is industrial/organizational psychology. Her research focuses on barriers encountered by women and ethnic minorities pursuing educational and career pathways in STEM. Abstract: We study digital multisided platforms as complex adaptive business systems (CABS) where multiple sides have different and evolving objectives, preferences, and constraints. CABS are characterized by irreducible uncertainty, which cannot be reduced by the traditional approaches of collecting and processing data. Irreducible uncertainty in the system gives rise to a complex search matching problem between agents and value enhancing transactions. This paper presents a recommender systems-based approach for taming the complexity by allowing agents to coevolve and learn in the system. We propose a novel two-sided recommender system framework, which considers emergence on both sides of the platform and adapts to the changing environment to influence agents. An agent-based simulation model is developed based on popular internet-based educational platforms to study this complex system and test our hypotheses. Our results show the value of a twosided recommender system to tame complex search matching in platforms. We discuss implications for information systems and complexity science research. Collapse

Abstract: Many different implementations of Blockchain currently exist, each offering its own implementation of Bitcoin’s original proposal. It is difficult to compare these separate implementations for design choices, performance benchmarks or application suitability without a common basic design framework. Using the concept of design spaces, and using common components across five well-known blockchain systems, we propose a new software design pattern called CHASM for Blockchains which extends the Context Object design pattern. We provide a J2EE reference implementation of this design pattern and execute three experiments comparing performances of alternate blockchain implementations on different single and multi-core hardware architectures. This pattern can be used as a basis for designing, developing and comparing different Consensus(C), Hashing(H), Transaction Assembly(A), Storage(S) and Mining(M) techniques, which can aid in the process of designing, developing, testing and benchmarking Blockchains. Abstract: The success of the Open Source model of software development depends on the voluntary participation of external developers (the peripheral developers), a group that can have distinct motivations from that of project founders (the core developers). In this study, we examine peripheral developer participation by empirically examining approximately 2,600 open source projects. In particular, we hypothesize that peripheral developer participation is higher when the potential for building reputation by gaining recognition from project stakeholders is higher. We consider recognition by internal stakeholders (such as core developers) and external stakeholders (such as end-users and peers). We find a positive association between peripheral developer participation and the potential of stakeholder recognition after controlling for bug reports, feature requests, and other key factors. Our findings provide important insights for OSS founders and corporate managers for open sourcing or OSS adoption decisions. Collapse

Abstract: One of the biggest obstacles to software reuse is the cost involved in evaluating the suitability of possible reusable components. In recent years, code search engines have made significant progress in establishing the semantic suitability of components for new usage scenarios, but the problem of ranking components according to their non-functional suitability has largely been neglected. The main difficulty is that a component’s non-functional suitability for a specific reuse scenario is usually influenced by multiple, “soft” criteria, but the relative weighting of metrics for these criteria is rarely known quantitatively. What is required, therefore, is an effective and reliable strategy for ranking software components based on their non-functional properties without requiring users to provide quantitative weighting information. In this paper we present a novel approach for achieving this based on the non-dominated sorting of components driven by a specification of the relative importance of non-functional properties as a partial ordering. After describing the ranking algorithm and its implementation in a component search engine, we provide an explorative study of its properties on a sample set of components harvested from Maven Central. Abstract: Floods and water resource management are major challenges for human in present and the near future, and snowmelt floods which usually break out in arid or semi-arid regions often cause tremendous social and economic losses, and integrated information system (IIS) is valuable to scientific and public decision-making. This paper presents an integrated approach to snowmelt floods early-warning based on geoinformatics (i.e. remote sensing (RS), geographical information systems (GIS) and global positioning systems (GPS)), Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud services. It consists of main components such as infrastructure and devices in IoT, cloud information warehouse, management tools, applications and services, the results from a case study shows that the effectiveness of flood prediction and decision-making can be improved by using the IIS. The prototype system implemented in this paper is valuable to the acquisition, management and sharing of multi-source information in snowmelt flood early-warning even in other tasks of water resource management. The contribution of this work includes developing a prototype IIS for snowmelt flood early-warning in water resource management with the combination of IoT, Geoinformatics and Cloud Service, with the IIS, everyone could be a sensor of IoT and a contributor of the information warehouse, professional users and public are both servers and clients for information management and services. Furthermore, the IIS provides a preliminary framework of e-Science in resources management and environment science. Abstract: Software design is a knowledge intensive task that constitutes a critical part of the software development process. Using a controlled experiment involving software practitioners, this research examines two potentially useful mechanisms for improving the software design process. Specifically, this study examines the impact of structural distribution of cognition through design patterns and social distribution of cognition through collaborating pairs on design outcomes. The results indicate that the use of design patterns as external cognitive artifacts improves design quality, reduces time taken to solve a design problem, and leads to higher participant satisfaction. Collaborating pairs of software designers were compared to participants working alone but whose efforts were conjointly considered as the best and second-best members of nominal pairs. It was found that paired designers produced higher quality designs compared with the second-best members of nominal pairs, did not differ from the best member of a nominal pair, but took more time to complete a design task than either member of a nominal pair. The results also indicate that the availability of design patterns raises the performance level of the second-best member of a nominal pair, in terms of quality, and reduces task completion time when compared with a pair not using design patterns. Finally, paired designers were found to experience higher levels of task satisfaction when compared with individuals. Implications for research and practice are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Electric mobility is considered to be an essential building block of a sustainable transportation paradigm. Particularly for the urban metropolis of the 21st century electric vehicles embody a promise of decreased air pollution and increased quality of living. However, city planners need to muster enormous investments into urban charging infrastructure in advance. We develop a decision support system to help city planners use these funds more efficiently and place charging infrastructure where it is truly needed. We construct a regression model to determine factors that influence the utilization of charge points in Amsterdam, one of the most "electrified" cities in the world. We include data on more than 50,000 points of interest, for instance shopping malls and museums, as well as charging data from 273 charging points with 427 individual outlets in the city of Amsterdam. From these influences we derive a decision support system that places charge points where they are expected to experience the highest utilization. Collapse
