Abstract: Many large organizations have on-going Enterprise Architecture initiatives. Key aims include achieving more organizational agility, and to tidy up a messy portfolio of IT silo systems. A holistic approach to IT architecture has been an accepted strategy, but the results of these initiatives have been variable. An underresearched aspect is how different organizational units respond to the call for a holistic approach. In this study, we investigate how different stakeholders connected to three ongoing projects responded to the call for EA. With a qualitative approach, we identify three options of response to EA initiatives: (i) compliance with the EA strategy, (ii) loyal but isolated response, and (iii) rebel solutions. We argue for the need of a more nuanced repertoire of actions for dealing with EA, and show how these responses are useful for understanding and managing successful EA. Collapse

Abstract: The fuzzy object-oriented databases have been proposed to meet the need of dealing with fuzzy as well as complex objects. In this paper, we present a formal fuzzy object-oriented database model. Based on the semantic measure of fuzzy data, we first identify two kinds of fuzzy object redundancies, which are inclusion redundancy and equivalence redundancy, and then define three kinds of merging operation for redundancy removal. On the basis, we define some fuzzy algebraic operations for fuzzy classes and fuzzy objects. Finally, in the paper, we discuss fuzzy querying strategies and give the form of SQL-like fuzzy querying for the fuzzy object-oriented databases. Collapse

Abstract: We analyze learning and knowledge transfer in a computing call center. The information technology (IT) technical services provided by call centers are characterized by constant changes in relevant knowledge and a wide variety of support requests. Under this IT problem-solving context, we analyze the learning curve relationship between problem-solving experience and performance enhancement. Based on data collected from a university computing call center consisting of different types of consultants, our empirical findings indicate that (a) the learning effect—as measured by the reduction of average resolution time—occurs with experience, (b) knowledge transfer within a group occurs among lower-level consultants utilizing application-level knowledge (as opposed to technical-level knowledge), and (c) knowledge transfers across IT problem types. These estimates of learning and knowledge transfer contribute to the development of an empirically grounded understanding of IT knowledge workers' learning behavior. The results also have implications for operational decisions about the staffing and problem-solving strategy of call centers. Collapse

Abstract: Sharing data between organizations is challenging because it is difficult to ensure that those consuming the data accurately interpret it. The promise of the next generation WWW, the semantic Web, is that semantics about shared data will be represented in ontologies and available for automatic and accurate machine processing of data. Thus, there is interorganizational business value in developing applications that have ontology-based enterprise models at their core. In an ontology-based enterprise model, business rules and definitions are represented as formal axioms, which are applied to enterprise facts to automatically infer facts not explicitly represented. If the proposition to be inferred is a requirement from, say, ISO 9000 or Sarbanes-Oxley, inference constitutes a model-based proof of compliance. In this paper, we detail the development and application of the TOVE ISO 9000 Micro-Theory, a model of ISO 9000 developed using ontologies for quality management (measurement, traceability, and quality management system ontologies). In so doing, we demonstrate that when enterprise models are developed using ontologies, they can be leveraged to support business analytics problems - in particular, compliance evaluation - and are sharable. Abstract: Finding good algorithms for assessing the similarity of complex objects in ontologies is central to the functioning of techniques such as retrieval, matchmaking, clustering, data-mining, semantic sense disambiguation, ontology translations, and simple object comparisons. These techniques provide the basis for supporting a wide variety of business intelligence computing tasks like finding a process in a best practice repository, finding a suitable service provider or outsourcing partner for agile process enactment, dynamic customer segmentation, semantic web applications, and systems integration. To our knowledge, however, there exists no study that systematically compares the prediction quality of ontology-based similarity measures. This paper assembles a catalogue of ontology-based similarity measures that are (partially) adapted from related domains. These measures are compared to each other within a large, real-world best practice ontology as well as evaluated in a realistic business process retrieval scenario. We find that different similarity algorithms reflect different notions of similarity. We also show how a combination of similarity measures can be used to improve both precision and recall of an ontology-based, query-by-example style, object-retrieval approach. Combining the study’s findings with the literature, we argue for the need of extended studies to assemble a more complete catalogue of object similarity measures that can be evaluated in many applications and ontologies. Abstract: As mathematical models are increasingly adopted for corporate decision-making, problems arise in departmental information sharing and collaboration around model management systems. When multiple departments are involved in decision-making problems, it is necessary to consider the individual conditions of the multiple departments as a whole from an entire organizational perspective. However, in functionally decentralized organizations, the operational data is usually dispersed in individual departments, thus, the departmental decisions are made separately on the basis of limited information and perspective. This paper proposes an object-oriented data model for developing a collaborative model management system that facilitates not only sharing mathematical models among multiple departments, but also coordinating and propagating ongoing changes in the models on a real-time basis. A prototype system is developed at KAIST on a commercial object-oriented database system called ObjectStore using C++ programming language. Collapse

Abstract: The execution of workflow processes requires authorizations for enforcing the assignment of tasks to agents, either human or automated, according to the security policy of the organization. This paper presents a workflow authorization framework based on roles and organizational levels, and on authorization constraints. To facilitate the assignment of tasks to agents, roles and organizational levels are organized into hierarchies. Authorization constraints are introduced to specify instance-dependent, time-dependent, and history-dependent authorizations. Authorization constraints are specified in terms of active rules, used also for authorization management. The Workflow Management System determines authorized agents on the basis of the contents of an authorization base maintained through the active rules defined in the system. Collapse

Abstract: From an IT point of view, a key objective of successful knowledge management is to provide relevant and necessary information at the right time to support humans in accomplishing their tasks. This paper presents a prototypical system which meets this objective in an enterprise environment. Based on context information associated with the enterprise's business processes, an integration of workflow engine and information assistant enables active presentation of relevant information to the user. We describe the functionality of the system and elaborate (i) on necessary extensions to the business process models, (ii) the ontologies used for information modeling, and (iii) the integration of workflow engine and active information assistant.
