Abstract: Fake news are a threat of the information age, yet many factors that determine their spread, such as emotional tone and tie strength, remain under-researched. Responding to calls for research, we developed an experimental study that explains the impact of emotional tone and tie strength in the context of instant messaging. We hypothesize effects on the willingness to fact-check and intention to share, mediated by sender credibility and news believability. Our results will contribute to the academic literature on various levels: we consider the emotional and relational dimensions of fake news sharing. Furthermore, we provide a multidimensional understanding of the emotionality of strong-tie contacts sharing fake news in a seemingly private and safe environment. For policymakers, we provide insights that help detect fake news, and we provide individuals with persuasion knowledge to self-protect against fake news. Collapse

Abstract: Using conversational agents as decision-support tools brings together an interesting mix of theoretical lenses. On the one hand, user experiences with agents must still conform to characteristics of fluent use as any interactive system. But at the same time, the more human-like nature of back-and-forth discourse, instead of static graphical interfaces, provides users with social cues that they must then contend with. This study demonstrates how users facing disfluency, such as goal-oriented decision-making with large choice sets, can aid themselves with filters as a tool to reach the end of their task. It also demonstrates how a slowed system response (a social cue) will have a negative effect in disfluent situations where users are trying to regain confidence. A slowed system response time discourages users from using filters leaving them making a suboptimal decision. This study shows how decision fluency and social cues have interesting interactions in their effect on users performing tasks with conversational agents. Collapse

Abstract: Frequent and habitual engagement with social media can reinforce certain activities such as sharing, clicking hyperlinks, and liking, which may be performed with insufficient cognition. In this study, we aimed to examine the associations between personality traits, habits, and information processing to identify social media users who are susceptible to phishing attacks. Our experimental data consisted of 215 social media users. The results revealed two important findings. First, users who scored high on the personality traits of extraversion, agree­ ableness, and neuroticism were more likely to engage in habitual behaviors that increase their susceptibility to phishing attacks, whereas those who scored high on conscientiousness were less likely. Second, users who habitually react to social media posts were more likely to apply heuristic processing, making them more sus­ ceptible to phishing attacks than those who applied systematic processing. Abstract: Recent advances in wearable, implantable and ingestible technologies permit unprecedented assessments of various aspects of health and wellness. The ubiquity of smartphones, smart watches and fitness tracking tools has provided vast amounts of digital physiologic and behavioral data. These "phenotypes" of health -prosody of smartphone use, biometric data surrounding health events, geolocation and ambient environment conditions -provide an opportunity for social scientists, engineers and clinicians to advance health interventions antecedent to exacerbations of disease. For example, phenotypes of smartphone use have been correlated with changes in mental health and pain, ingestible sensors measure real-time changes and contexts of medication adherence in various diseases, and biometric data may predict different states of health conditions prior to their clinically apparent manifestation.The COVID-19 pandemic continues to spur increasing acceptance of digital biomarkers and personal technologies as health management tools. Additionally, technologies that leverage public health infrastructure such as wastewater-based epidemiology and crowdsourced street maps provide novel insights into the effects of disease in communities at the population health level.The goal of this minitrack is to facilitate multidisciplinary collaboration and exploration of various facets of health technologies and their ability to surveil and predict disease. Last year's minitrack explored the design and implementation challenges as innovative technologies were deployed in clinical settings: virtual windows to enhance the patient experience in the emergency department, wearable sensors to detect alcohol consumption, agent-based modeling to evaluate the cost-savings of poison control centers, and the use of noise-cancelling earbuds to improve sleep quality for healthcare shift workers.This year's minitrack features four papers that explore innovative technological applications to improve the treatment and detection of disease states.In our first paper, the authors present a novel augmented reality (AR) training for two emergency medical procedures (bag-valve-mask ventilation and needle decompression of pneumothorax), demonstrating no difference between AR and standard video training in usability and usefulness scores or expert rating of the technique. Our second paper details the development of a novel asynchronous learning module for medical toxicology education that can uniquely be delivered via text-messaging, an intervention that emergency medicine residents and physician assistants at various stages of training find to be easy-to-use and of high educational value. The third paper presents formative qualitative work toward the development of a gamified app to help individuals in Vietnam maintain adherence to antituberculosis therapy. Our fourth paper examines the use of a wearable sensor system to detect stress and craving in individuals with substance use disorder. Finally, we conclude with a discussion regarding the ability to leverage technology to detect and prevent abuse in academic medicine.We are excited to re-convene in person this year at HICSS-56. We are looking forward to generating fruitful discussions of the featured papers and fostering the development of new ideas for future work. Collapse

Abstract: Customer service employees are generally advised to express positive emotion during their interactions with customers. The rise and maturity of artificial intelligence (AI)–powered conversational agents, also known as chatbots, beg the question: should AI agents be equipped with the ability to express positive emotion during customer service interactions? This research explores how, when, and why an AI agent’s expression of positive emotion affects customers’ service evaluations. We argue that AI-expressed positive emotion can influence customers via dual pathways: an affective pathway of emotional contagion and a cognitive pathway of expectation–disconfirmation. We propose that positive emotion expressed by an AI agent (versus a human employee) is less effective in facilitating service evaluations because of a heightened level of expectation–disconfirmation. We further introduce a novel individual difference variable, customers’ relationship norm orientation, which affects their expectations toward the AI agent and moderates the cognitive pathway. Results from three laboratory experiments substantiate our claims. By revealing a distinctive impact of positive emotion expressed by an AI agent compared with a human employee, these findings deepen our understanding of customers’ reactions to emotional AIs, and they offer valuable insights for the deployment of AIs in customer service. Abstract: What is the optimal size for online groups that use electronic communication and collaboration tools? Previous research typically suggested optimal group sizes of about 5 to 7 members, but this research predominantly examined in-person groups. Here we investigate online groups whose members communicate with each other using two electronic collaboration tools: text chat and shared editing. Unlike previous research that studied groups performing a single task, here we measure group performance using a test of collective intelligence (CI) that includes a combination of tasks specifically chosen to predict performance on a wide range of other tasks [72]. Our findings suggest that there is a curvilinear relationship between group size and performance and that the optimal group size in online groups is between 25 and 35. This, in turn, suggests that online groups may now allow more people to be productively involved in group decision-making than was possible with in-person groups in the past. Collapse

Abstract: The online referral reward program (ORRP) is a social marketing method by which firms reward existing users and encourage them to recommend products or services to their friends. Prior research has primarily focused on the impact of ORRP design on users' participation, however, the role of individuals' characteristics is unexplored. Based on regulatory focus theory and self-efficacy theory, this research proposes and investigates the effect of users' regulatory focus (promotion-focused vs. prevention-focused) on their referral intention and explores its mechanism and boundary condition. The results of three experiments show that compared to prevention-focused users, promotion-focused users have higher selfefficacy to complete the referral task; and thus, have higher referral intention. This effect will be attenuated when the tie strength between inviters and invitees is strong. The findings not only contribute to the research on ORRP and regulatory focus but also provide guidance for firms to optimize ORRPs. Collapse

Abstract: The popularity of the maker movement has prompted extensive research on how the maker spirit enhances learning and redefines entrepreneurism. However, what is left unknown is the dynamic process of making as a hobby and how it may cut across virtual and physical media. To seal this gap, we conducted a qualitative study to investigate how online social networks and communities (OSNCs) may play a role in influencing making-related decisions. We carried out diary studies and semi-structured individual interviews with 25 arts and crafts hobbyists. The findings show that YouTube and Pinterest are the top two mentioned sources to facilitate ideation about what to make. Participants mostly turned to YouTube and Reddit to address problems when getting stuck. We demonstrate the direct and close relationship between tangible making and OSNCs as a multidimensional source, showing how virtual user-generated content can impact everyday hands-on practices. Abstract: User engagement, a key factor in the success of social media platforms, has long been based on permanent content. A recent paradigm shift in platform design has led large social media providers to implement ephemerality features that by default make shared content disappear after a certain amount of time. However, very little is known about how ephemerality features affect user engagement and behavior in social media. Drawing upon the technology affordance perspective, we conducted a qualitative multimethod study involving individual interviews and focus groups. Our findings show that the affordances arising from features with varying degrees of ephemerality (i.e., snaps and stories) differ from those of permanent content features in terms of self-presentation, browsing others' content, and communication. Adopting a multidimensional conceptualization of user engagement, we show the positive (e.g., more content sharing) and negative (e.g., cognitive burden from context loss) effects for snaps and stories that should be cautiously considered by social media platforms aiming to introduce such features. Finally, we reveal new user behaviors that relate to sharing snapshots of fleeting value as snaps or experiences of transient value as stories. Collapse

Abstract: Research suggests that women negotiators tend to obtain worse outcomes than men; however, we argue this finding does not apply to all women. Integrating research on social hierarchies, gender in negotiations, and intersectional stereotype content, we develop a theoretical framework that explains the interactive effect of race and gender on offers and outcomes received in distributive negotiations. With a focus on Black and White women and men negotiators, we predicted that stereotypes related to their race and gender lead Black women negotiators to receive more favorable negotiation offers and outcomes than White women and Black men negotiators and this effect is explained by ascriptions of dominance and prestige, respectively. Results of three experimental studies involving diverse samples—online panel participants, individuals selling items on Craigslist, and MBA students—support these predictions. More specifically, we find that Black women negotiators are perceived as more dominant than White women negotiators, and Black women negotiators are ascribed greater prestige than Black men negotiators. These ascriptions allow Black women negotiators to receive more favorable negotiation offers and outcomes compared with White women and Black men. These findings highlight the importance of jointly considering the influence of race and gender in negotiations. Funding: This research was supported in part by funding offered to Dr. Sreedhari D.
