Abstract: Online cancer communities (OCCs) are crucial resources for cancer patients, providing support for the complex and challenging aspects of the disease. Patients often face unique problems, and OCCs offer a place to seek support when friends and family may not understand. This study explores how unique topics discussed in OCCs impact user participation in a thread, measured by the number of replies, repliers, length of replies, and response speed. A deep-learning-based natural language processing topic model is used to calculate the uniqueness scores of posts in OCCs, based on the prevalence of each topic. The study has implications for OCC administrators, researchers, and physicians in terms of understanding and addressing unique health topics expressed in online communities. Collapse

Abstract: Social technologies on online review platforms enable social interactions among users, such as establishing following relationships and commenting on others' posts. Although it is well recognized that more socially engaged reviewers tend to be more active and generate content of higher quality, our knowledge about the impact of social interactions on peer evaluations of reviews is limited. To address this issue, we use a unique dataset from a major online review platform and find that, ceteris paribus, reviews posted by more socially engaged users receive more helpfulness votes than those posted by less socially engaged users. Similarly, users tend to vote more for reviews written by their mutual followers than for those written by nonfollowers. In addition, we find that less socially engaged users review a broader range of products and services but are less likely to stay on a platform, which may further contribute to the inflation of peer evaluations (toward online reviews). Our study provides unique empirical evidence regarding the influence of social interactions on review evaluations. Furthermore, we caution researchers and practitioners against utilizing review helpfulness scores as a sole measure for review quality and diagnosticity. Collapse

Abstract: Although self-service data preparation and analytics tools (SSPATs) have become increasingly popular and can provide major benefits to users, barriers associated with the technology and its usage may prevent adoption. Based on prior work on technology acceptance and related theories, this study develops a net effects model and a configurational effects model to further the understanding of SSPAT acceptance. Using a configurational lens, this study shows how a fresh methodological approach from a different epistemological stance applied to a well-established theoretical basis can offer novel insights into effects and patterns that may complement exisiting findings. The results of our empirical study based on a sample of 339 firms confirm insights from previous studies and advance them by providing vision for compound antecedents of SSPAT acceptance and complementarity effects among antecedent conditions. Abstract: Despite the dominance of customer co-creation experience value (CCEV) in the value co-creation research, its theoretical domain has not been systematically analysed and developed. Specifically, little is known about the nature of social media-enabled CCEV. To address the knowledge gaps, this study employs a five-step procedure to develop a conceptualisation and instrument of CCEV construct in a social media context. First, drawing on the relevant literature, we determine the conceptual framework, definition, and assumptions of CCEV. Second, we employ grounded theory methodology to analyse customer review data from three representative social media sites and identify the dimensions of CCEV (four themes consisting of 10 dimensions). Third, we create an item pool of CCEV based on the prior work and in-depth interviews of 10 customers. In the fourth and fifth steps, we collect three waves of quantitative data to develop and validate the instrument including item refinement (n1 = 234), instrument validation (n2 = 521), and nomological validity examination (n3 = 615). The results indicate that the instrument exhibits satisfactory reliability and validity. Our work contributes to theory and practice by presenting a context-specific and fine-grained conceptualisation of CCEV and a reliable and valid survey instrument. Collapse

Abstract: The feedback mechanism is the basis for motivating users to make continuous contributions in the Open Innovation Community (OIC). Although previous studies have revealed the overall role of positive feedback in promoting continuous user contribution, it is not clear which type of positive feedback is more effective and how it changes over time. To solve these problems, we constructed a research model based on reinforcement theory and took Lego Ideas, a typical OIC, as the research object to crawl users' ideas and feedback data for empirical analysis. The results confirmed the effect of positive feedback and further demonstrated that, the effectiveness of positive feedback varies based on feedback concreteness and the tenure of the focal user. Our study contributes to the literature on how feedback affects user contributions in online communities by refining the classifications of feedback, and provide practical guidance for companies to motivate users to contributing ideas continuously. Abstract: Live streaming user-generated video (UGV), a nascent format of crowdsourced content, has grown massive popularity among social media users and is believed to have substantial potential business influences. However, industry practitioners express concerns regarding this new form on social media platforms and the influences of live streaming UGV consumption lack research. Motivated such, through a uniquely merged dataset from the video game industry, we conduct a series of panel time-series empirical analyses to investigate the business value of live streaming UGV consumption. Further, we propose a conceptual framework based on the sense of com­ munity literature to understand the consequences of live streaming UGV consumption and verify it through several online experiments. This research contributes to the IS literature by shedding light on the influences of emergent crowdsourced content, providing a conceptual framework to existing literature, and offering rich managerial implications and guidelines to managers regarding utilizing live streaming UGVs. Abstract: This paper examines how alternative food networks (AFNs) cultivate engagement on a social media platform. Using the method proposed in Kar and Dwivedi (2020) and Berente et al. (2019), we contribute to theory through combining exploratory text analysis with model testing. Using the theoretical lens of relationship cultivation and social media engagement, we collected 55,358 original Weibo posts by 90 farms and other AFN participants in China and used Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) modeling for topic analysis. We then used the literature to map the topics with constructs and developed a theoretical model. To validate the theoretical model, a panel dataset was constructed on Weibo account and year level, with Chinese city-level yearly economic data included as control variables. A fixed effects panel data regression analysis was performed. The empirical results revealed that posts centered on openness/disclosure, sharing of tasks, and knowledge sharing result in positive levels of social media engagement. Posting about irrelevant information and advertising that uses repetitive wording in multiple posts had negative effects on engagement. Our findings suggest that cultivating engagement requires different relationship strategies, and social media platforms should be leveraged according to the context and the purpose of the social cause. Our research is also among the early studies that use both big data analysis of large quantities of textual data and model validation for theoretical insights. Collapse

Abstract: A new wave of Lo-fi Hip Hop has emerged on YouTube, and Bilibili in China, transforming into a trending and distinctive video streaming phenomenon. However, it remains unknown how viewers with divergent socio-cultural backgrounds engage with the Lo-fi Hip Hop streaming video on digital platforms, why they participate, and how the sense of community is exhibited. A qualitative mix-method study containing comment analysis and in-depth interviews (N=12) was conducted to investigate the uniqueness of the Lo-fi Hip Hop community on Bilibili. The findings revealed the difference in viewers' online community engagement between YouTube and Bilibili and various motivations of watching Lo-fi Hip Hop streaming. Lastly, the study also extends the Sense of Community (SoC) theory to the community with implications for the application. The study further contributes to the research of Lo-fi Hip Hop video streaming in a global context. Collapse

Abstract: Online health communities (OHCs) play an important role in enabling patients to exchange information and obtain social support from each other. However, do OHC interactions always benefit patients? In this research, we investigate different mechanisms by which OHC content may affect patients' emotions. Specifically, we notice users can read not only emotional support intended to help them but also emotional support targeting other persons or posts that are not intended to generate any emotional support (auxiliary content). Drawing from emotional contagion theories, we argue that even though emotional support may benefit targeted support seekers, it could have a negative impact on the emotions of other support seekers. Our empirical study on an OHC for depression patients supports these arguments. Our findings are new to the literature and have critical practical implications since they suggest that we should carefully manage OHC-based interventions for depression patients to avoid unintended consequences. We design a novel deep learning model to differentiate emotional support from auxiliary content. Such differentiation is critical for identifying the negative effect of emotional support on unintended recipients. We also discuss options to alter the intervention volume, length, and frequency to tackle the challenge of the negative effect. Collapse
