Abstract: To improve the academic integrity of online examination, digital proctoring systems have been implemented in higher education worldwide, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this paper, we conducted a literature review of the research on digital proctoring in higher education. We found 115 relevant publications in nine databases. We applied topic modeling methods to analyze the corpus which resulted in eight topics. The review shows that the previous studies focus largely on the systems' development, adoption of the systems, the effects of proctored online exams on students' performance, and the legal, ethical, security, and privacy issues of digital proctoring. The annual topic trends indicate future research concerns, such as systems' development, online programs (MOOCs) and proctoring, along with various issues of using digital proctoring. The results of the review provide useful insights as well as implications for future research on digital proctoring, a crucial process for digitalizing higher education. Collapse

Abstract: The upsurge of digital innovations around the world has led to the establishment of many digital organizations, mostly small-medium, that focus on digital service innovation. For such organizations, the dominant use of digital technologies significantly shapes the cognition of their executives. But technology shaping of executive cognition is underresearched and, hence, underexplained. This paper seeks to address this limitation through an empirical study informed by critical realism and media ecology theory. The study explains how and why digital technology shapes executive cognition through combined influence of digital platforms and applications, service innovation, and executive functions. This explanation leads to the conceptualization of the executive of the digital organization as a platform. The Platform Executive is characterized by cognitive restructuring in a rapid and innovative manner during engagement with digital technologies. Based on these explanations, the paper discusses the theoretical, research, and practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: Inspired by increasing IS research on refugees' ICT use, this study contributes to a better understanding of which smartphone applications (apps) are common among refugees in Germany compared to immigrants and Germans. In relying on the heuristic that most frequently used apps are present on the home screen, we designed a descriptive study to gain initial insights. We analyzed the smartphone home screens of a sample composed of 101 refugees, 107 Germans, and 72 immigrants living in Germany. Out of the 280 home screens in our sample, we decoded 6,249 apps that we analyzed along four dimensions: app frequency and assigned category, participants' genders, and participants' age group. Our results show which apps and app categories are most prevalent on the home screens of refugee smartphones. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to open the 'black box' of refugees' adoption of smartphone apps and offers practical knowledge for mobile industry stakeholders, NGOs, and governments. Abstract: Some business processes do well when activities remain physical; for others, there must be a balance between the physical and virtual process for them to survive. Virtualization does not imply the use of technology because some processes like catalog sales can be virtual but are not IT-enabled. For the virtualized process that is IT-enabled -such as the P2P collaborative consumption or the sharing economy phenomenon -it is important to theorize their sustainability because their characteristics may differ. This research interrogates the underlying notion of amenability in process virtualization theory (PVT) and suggests that understanding process virtualizability must go beyond the amenability of a physical process (as posited by PVT) to the sustainability of the IT-enabled virtual process. Based on our investigation of online learning platforms, we provide empirical support that network effects and scalability are necessary, but not sufficient, for the sustainability of knowledge sharing firm's virtual processes and that aligned motives play a compensatory role in the sustenance of a knowledge sharing firm's virtual process. Abstract: Despite advances in the quality and availability of information and communication technologies (ICT), the level of access and skill in using these resources remains unequal. This is particularly evident in developing countries. To reduce the gap between these levels of ICT use, organizations (both public and private) invest in the expansion of infrastructure by providing ICT access and ICT training. In this study, we demonstrate that there is a gap in current approaches to monitor and evaluate large-scale ICT training interventions. Thus, we propose an approach based on social network analysis and data mining techniques, and apply it to an online training program conducted in different regions of Brazil. The results allow us to examine different aspects of the program, such as the region of participants, the institutions driving the intervention, local indicators of telecommunications infrastructure, and local socioeconomic conditions. Abstract: Advances in Information Technology (IT) have changed the nature of services, letting it become increasingly digitized. Pro-active services represent a new kind of digital service delivery model promising added value for the receiver of the service who can consume a service without being concerned about its initiation. However, research has provided neither adequate conceptualizations for these novel digital services nor insights into customers’ attitudes and readiness to accept them. To our knowledge, the present study is first in filling this research gap. We provide three metaphors, simplification, enhancement and outsourcing, for different classes of pro-active services. Moreover, we develop a causal model for explaining customer acceptance of pro-active services that is evaluated quantitatively adopting a scenario-based approach for an enhancement service. As an example we choose the readiness of students to accept a pro-active digital service from their education provider. Our findings reveal outcome evaluation as the strongest predictor of attitude. Additionally, attitude is determined by control beliefs and trust. Attitude towards pro-active service affects the customer’s willingness to accept the pro-active service. The presented findings help service organizations in designing pro-actives services that are presumably accepted by customers. Collapse

Abstract: Service-dominant logic highlights the ability of service ecosystems to ‘self-adjust’ as a reaction to systemic inefficiencies or external changes [1]–[3]. We contribute to the question on how focal actors shape the boundaries of service ecosystems through service innovation. This is a single case study on a digital ecosystem focused on a first mover in digital platforms for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs): Udacity. We found two mechanisms, where Udacity shaped the boundaries of its ecosystem: ‘user self-service integration’ and ‘gradual partner disintegration’. Throughout three phases between 2011 and 2015 they disintegrated services from higher education, namely offering courses online, designing course, and accreditation due to lowly perceived adaptability of universities and external pressures for finding a sustainable business model. Additionally, they disintegrated self-organized solutions of user needs and re-integrated them with new actors. This led to newly shaped boundaries of the service ecosystem. Collapse

Abstract: With the rapid growth of “Web of Things” (WoT), there is a pressing need to develop effective mechanisms for the intelligent discovery and selection of these things (items). Recommender systems are viable solutions to address the issue of WoT discovery and selection. However, classical recommender systems are weak in handling sparse recommendation spaces which characterize most WoT recommendations. Moreover, classical recommender systems may not be able to scale up to efficiently process a large number of things on the Web, and yet these systems may produce big-error recommendations that diminish users' trusts on utilizing WoT. The main contribution of our research is the design and development of a novel recommendation method which is underpinned by the principle of object typicality verified in the field of cognitive psychology to address the aforementioned issues related to WoT recommendations. Based on the MovieLens benchmark data set, our experimental results show that the proposed recommendation method is effective and produces the least big-errors. Since the proposed method exploits data generalization by operating at item group and user group level during recommendation time, it is more effective and efficient than other baseline methods given sparse training data. Based on the Netflix benchmark data set that simulates a large WoT recommendation space, the proposed method also significantly outperforms state-of-the-art recommendation methods in terms of Mean Absolute Error (MAE). The business implication of our research is that the proposed recommendation method can enhance the situation awareness of WoT applications which facilitate the reuse of enterprise resources and the interoperability among enterprises.
