Abstract: Organisations are increasingly creating inter-organisational ecosystem partnerships to innovate openly. Despite effective knowledge management significantly supporting ecosystem infrastructures, empirical insights into the importance of and interdependencies between conditions for successful knowledge exchange across ecosystem contexts remain unexplored within existing literature. This study implements a mixed-method approach to ascertain which conditions are responsible for knowledge transfer success across innovation ecosystems. Interpretive Structural Modelling was employed to analyse questionnaires with key ecosystem stakeholders, in order to impose a hierarchical structure upon the conditions. The configurational nature of these conditions, and their combinations into solutions for success was ascertained through analysing semi-structured interviews using fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis. Results reveal multiple, mutually exclusive pathways to knowledge transfer success, grouped into three solution types, increasing understanding of the interrelated nature of the knowledge transfer conditions. Abstract: Innovation in the public sector plays an important role in improving the quality of public services and addressing economic and societal challenges. Most of the previous research on innovations has focused on the private sector. How organizations may achieve ambidexterity for innovations in the public sector characterized by unique constraints has been largely underexplored. Platforms have emerged as key components in organizations’ ap­ proaches to innovation. Using an empirical study in a public sector organization, this study identifies a platformbased approach that can be used to achieve ambidexterity in balancing exploitative and exploratory innovations in the public sector. Organizations facing constraints pertaining to structure, risk, and value may benefit from considering their product/service development, process management, and value formulation through this approach. This study also identifies practices in platform development, appropriation, and control that contributed to the success of the platform-based approach. Collapse

Abstract: Motivated by prior inconclusive findings on the effectiveness of open innovation initiatives in generating busi­ ness value and the complexity of open innovation, this study draws on the IT-enabled organizational capabilities perspective to propose that the mobilization of information technology (IT) resources can positively affect the development of open innovation initiatives and, in turn, improve firms' open innovation performance. Our empirical analysis of >1100 large Spanish firms confirms that firms' IT resource investments positively impact the development and execution of open innovation initiatives, which in turn improves firms' open innovation performance in terms of product and process innovations. This research contributes to the business value of IT and to Information Systems (IS) research on open innovation by evidencing the enabling role of IT investment in achieving open innovation performance gains. Abstract: This study examines how changes between drawing inspiration from distant knowledge and focusing on local knowledge affect contributions in online communities. The research compares two theoretical frameworks for understanding knowledge generation: The tension-based view highlights the tensional perspective of initially engaging with distant knowledge before narrowing the focus to specific domains to foster creative behavior. Conversely, the foundational view posits that creative behavior requires local expertise before it is combined with insights from distant knowledge domains. We collected data from 15 Q&A forums hosted by Stack Exchange and used natural language processing to analyze users' contributions and changes in interest. Our findings suggest that both theories explain knowledge generation. Individuals need to engage with more distant knowledge over time but also streamline their interests between local and distant knowledge domains to generate more valuable and novel contributions. The study enriches understanding of knowledge generation in online communities and offers insights into how to support creative individuals. Collapse

Abstract: As digital technology continues to advance, organizations require more flexibility to meet the needs of their customers and remain competitive. To do so, many incumbent organizations fundamentally change their established structures and processes to implement scaled-agile organizations (SAO), emulating digital organizations and leveraging development speed and customer focus. However, when everything changes, there are significant effects on the employees' identities. Thus, we explore how implementing an SAO affects employees' professional role identities (PRI). The paper follows a case study approach analyzing two cases with 21 interviews, observational, and secondary data collected over a period of 18 months. We contribute to the literature by identifying three effects of an SAO implementation on PRI (threat, empowerment, and extension) and describing how individuals react based on the effect on their PRI. We inform practitioners on the overall SAO implementation process and consequences for professionals, offering a new perspective on organizational transformation challenges. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations are riddled with cooperation problems, that is, instances in which workers need to voluntarily exert effort to achieve efficient collective outcomes. To sustain high levels of cooperation, the experimental literature demonstrates the centrality of reciprocal preferences but has also overlooked some of its negative consequences. In this paper, we ran lab-in-the-field experiments in the context of open-source software development teams to provide the first field evidence that highly reciprocating groups are not necessarily more successful in practice. Instead, the relationship between high reciprocity and performance can be more accurately described as U-shaped. Highly reciprocal teams are generally more likely to fail and only outperform other teams conditional on survival. We use the dynamic structure of our data on field contributions to demonstrate the underlying theoretical mechanism. Reciprocal preferences work as a catalyst at the team level: they reinforce the cooperative equilibrium in good times but also make it harder to recover from a negative signal (the project dies). Our results call into question the idea that strong reciprocity can shield organizations from cooperation breakdowns. Abstract: Servitization describes the transformation of a manufacturer to a customer-centric service and solution provider. Providing customer solutions requires the integration of knowledge from different domains, e.g., engineering, software, and service, and usually also entails that more knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) become part of the manufacturer's overall business model. Against this background, this article investigates how manufacturing and software firms leverage knowledge in KIBS and corresponding business models. We developed a taxonomy that systematizes KIBS along the three metadimensions of value proposition, value creation, and value capture. The application of our taxonomy to exemplary cases from both industries shows different strategies of knowledge usage across these industries. Our findings can support the development of KIBS and help practitioners to understand different ways of utilizing knowledge as a strategic resource. Implications for research point to the need for better understanding the collaboration of multiple actors from a knowledge-based perspective. Collapse

Abstract: Curiosity, a motivational state of exploratory behavior, is conducive to innovation diffusion by encouraging users’ exploration on open innovation platforms. Yet, despite its importance, there is a scarcity of research investigating the mechanism for piquing users’ curiosity. Accordingly, we advance a research model to unravel how platform service quality, in the form of service content quality and service delivery quality, affects users’ epistemic and perceptual curiosity via inducing their trust and distrust in a platform. Taking mobile app stores as our empirical context, we collected data from 431 users to validate our hypothesized relationships. Analytical results indicate that both dimensions of platform service quality positively influence users’ trust in platform, whereas only service delivery quality negatively influences users’ distrust in platform. Furthermore, trust in platform directly triggers curiosity whereas distrust in platform positively influences users’ feeling-of-deprivation, which in turn triggers curiosity. In this sense, our analytical results reveal the mediating roles of distrust in platform and feeling-of-deprivation in the relationship between service delivery quality and curiosity. Collapse

Abstract: In our increasingly knowledge-based society the need for innovative concepts within the discipline of Knowledge Management (KM) becomes clear. Therefore, this article aims to shed light on current and uprising innovative technologies and concepts within the discipline of KM. This study conveys recent and previous scientific literature on the relevance of uprising innovative concepts within the various dimensions of KM. We conducted a systematic literature review (SLR) on various literature sources to cover the whole spectrum of innovative KM approaches. All 37 reviewed articles originate from acknowledged sources and were written in English. The findings show, which innovative concepts show relevance within KM, how they are classified into the three innovation categories social, technological, and organizational, how they manifest within KM and what to expect from future KM innovations.
