Abstract: In the context of digital transformation, having a data-driven organizational culture has been recognized as an important factor for data analytics capabilities, innovativeness and competitive advantage of firms. However, the current literature on data-driven culture (DDC) is fragmented, lacking both a synthesis of findings and a theoretical foundation. Therefore, the aim of this work has been to develop a comprehensive framework for understanding DDC and the mechanisms that can be used to embed such a culture in organizations as well as structuring prior dispersed findings on the topic. Based on the foundation of organizational culture theory, we employed a Design Science Research (DSR) approach using a systematic literature review and expert interviews to build and evaluate a transformation-oriented framework. This research contributes to knowledge by synthesizing previously dispersed knowledge in a holistic framework, as well as, by providing a conceptual framework to guide the transformation towards a DDC. Abstract: The advent of sensor-based systems with their ability to collect, transmit and process context-aware data creates new opportunities for service delivery. We know from earlier research that there may be barriers to the adoption of new information technology (IT) within an organization. Sensor-based systems, with unprecedented potential for monitoring of products, people and processes are an interesting mix of potential and risk. Through the lens of organizational culture theory, we examine the question: Given the ambiguity and complexity of sensor-based systems, how does organizational culture influence perceptions of system value and purpose, and which factors determine the susceptibility of adoption among individual workers and teams? Our results suggest that the adoption of sensor-based systems is facilitated by 1) a basic comprehension of the system, its functionality, purpose and limitations; 2) a shared view of stakeholders’ roles and responsibilities, and 3) a pronounced and tangible vision for value creation. Abstract: With the increasing infusion of information systems through organizations, a dynamic understanding of the relationship between cultural values and artifacts is critical. This paper responds to calls to explore organizational culture from a dynamic view rather than the traditional static approach. We performed a case study using grounded theory principles of a digital transformation of a large, acute-care hospital in Australia. Our analysis reveals new insights into the dynamic relationship between the values of the new system (artifact) and the values of the organization, referred to as retroactive and proactive realization respectively. We extend past research by developing a process model that reveals how different types of culture work – the actions and doings through which culture is created, maintained, and disrupted – are invoked during realization processes. This research deepens our understanding of the realization process and the alignment literature with implications for research and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Agile software development methodologies represent a departure from the heavy document-driven procedures of plan-driven approaches. As organizations continue to adopt agile methodologies, understanding the factors that influence the routinization of agile is a growing concern. In recent years, researchers have focused their attention to the issues of post-adoptive agile use in order to extend our knowledge on agile assimilation. However, little research has been conducted to expose the assimilation gaps that occur as organizations seek to increase the extent and intensity of their agile use. Following prior literature, our objective is to articulate a model that explains the impact of organizational culture and structure on the routinization of agile methods. Abstract: Due to ever-growing investments in information systems (IS) in organizations, IS literature promotes an enterprise-wide perspective to keep local, short-term investments in line with global, long-term intentions. One of the central discourses in realizing an enterprise-wide perspective is the necessity of coordinating IS change and development efforts across organizational units. Notwithstanding its criticality, there is a lack of coherent body of theory about coordination. This study hence seeks to spotlight coordination as a lens by investigating prominently used reference theories in IS that implicitly consider coordination. Through conducting thematic analysis and synthesizing the reflection of coordination in IS reference theories, this study identifies four theory-grounded themes of coordination namely, informing, controlling, legitimating, and socializing. The identified themes guide prospective research in investigating IS phenomena through the lens of coordination. Collapse

Abstract: Present commercial software packages (such as ERP) have incorporated management insights, industry solutions, and best-practices to facilitate IT-business alignment. However, poor alignment of IT-business still exists on a large scale in practice. In this study, we investigate the notion of IT-business alignment from a managerial perspective and argue that, in addition to the four well-studied dimensions of ITbusiness alignment (i.e., knowledge, structure, society and culture), IT should also be aligned with institution to control opportunistic behaviors in administrative practices. Our study shows that: 1) IT exhibits a function of sensing to detect problems promptly, whereas institution exhibits a function of responding to solve problems effectively. From the perspective of governance, IT-business alignment refers to technology efficiency achieved by the coordination between IT and institution; 2) The alignment process undergoes three major stages: at the first stage, alignment is achieved between institution and IT but not between business process and IT; at the second stage, with the embedded management insights and best-practice solutions, IT integration succeeds in aligning with the business process but not with the original institution; at the third stage, the organization further develops integrated IT into customized IT and adapts the existing institution to achieve both IT-institution alignment and IT-business process alignment. A decline in the managerial performance of IT systems can be expected during this process; 3) It is not always wise to improve IT systems and revise original institution to pursue a higher level in IT-institution alignment. Practitioners should take the three-stage framework into account and fully examine the required effort before they start the process of IT-institution alignment. Collapse

Abstract: This study develops an integrated research model to examine various factors affecting the IT adoption in the context of the Unified Modeling Language (UML). UML is one type of business process modeling techniques, which in turn is a key aspect of the business process reengineering. The proposed research model is based on IT adoption framework and organizational culture theory. The model identifies fourteen variables, covering seven broad categories (IT characteristics, organization technology, environment, organization structure, organization process, organization culture, and project culture) that could potentially impact UML adoption in organizations. This comprehensive conceptual model is further validated by survey data collected from 251 North American organizations across five different industries. Our results support the proposed conceptualization and shed new light on the key factors associated with firms' adoption of UML technologies. Theoretical and managerial implications of the findings are discussed. Collapse

Abstract: This paper presents an empirical study that examines the effects of dynamic IT capability and organizational culture on firm performance. More specifically, this study investigates the main effects of dynamic IT capability on firm performance, the main effects of organizational culture on firm performance, and the interaction effects between the two factors on firm performance. Adopting the Resource-Based View (RBV) of the firm, dynamic capabilities theory, complementarity theory, and organizational culture theories, this multidisciplinary study uses survey method to collect data. This study finds that dynamic IT capability and organizational culture jointly predict firm performance. This research makes a contribution to both academic research and management practice. Theoretically, this study integrates multiple theories to provide a better IT business value model; practically, this study provides leaders in industry with useful advice on IT/IS strategy and IT investment decision-making. Abstract: The model of an anytime-anywhere workforce is changing the landscape of business today. Increasingly employees are being emancipated from their traditional offices by the widespread infiltration of technologies that facilitate this model. The question is, how can we characterize the culture developing in support of these new ways of working and how can they be cultivated? Understanding this “ nomadic culture ” is critical to both researchers and practitioners. Due to the newness of these technologies and the speed of their integration into today’s work practices, prior research lends little direction in understanding this developing culture. This research contributes by proposing and validating a multidimensional model of nomadic culture. The model describes nomadic culture in terms of three levels: underlying assumptions, espoused values, and artifacts. Each level is then described more specifically by eight measurable nomadic culture sub-constructs. Using the Structural Equation Modeling technique, proposed relationships among the sub-constructs are tested along with the effect of organizational support for nomadic behaviors on employee job satisfaction. Significant support for the model was found in data collected from 203 working IT professionals from a wide variety of organizations. Suggestions for future research as well as implications for practice are provided. Collapse

Abstract: An understanding of culture is important to the study of information technologies in that culture at various levels, including national, organizational, and group, can influence the successful implementation and use of information technology. Culture also plays a role in managerial processes that may directly, or indirectly, influence IT. Culture is a challenging variable to research, in part because of the multiple divergent definitions and measures of culture. Notwithstanding, a wide body of literature has emerged that sheds light on the relationship of IT and culture. This paper sets out to provide a review of this literature in order to lend insights into our understanding of the linkages between IT and culture. We begin by conceptualizing culture and laying the groundwork for a values-based approach to the examination of IT and culture. Using this approach, we then provide a comprehensive review of the organizational and cross-cultural IT literature that conceptually links these two traditionally separate streams of research. From our analysis, we develop six themes of IT-culture research emphasizing culture's impact on IT, IT's impact on culture, and IT culture. Building upon these themes, we then develop a theory of IT, values, and conflict. Based upon the theory, we develop propositions concerning three types of cultural conflict and the results of these conflicts. Ultimately, the theory suggests that the reconciliation of these conflicts results in a reorientation of values. We conclude with the particular research challenges posed in this line of inquiry.
