Does Analytics Help Resolve Equivocality in the Healthcare Context? Contrasting the Effects of Analyzability and Differentiation

Abstract: Organizations are increasingly using data analytics to help make decisions and drive positive outcomes. But organizational scholarship has warned us that the sort of information processing associated with analytic capabilities, while effective for uncertainty reduction, may be less effective in equivocal contexts. Equivocality is evident when tasks are not easily analyzable (task analyzability) or when organizational departments are highly differentiated (differentiation). We hypothesize that analytics will be less effective in driving positive outcomes when equivocality is high because of low task analyzability. However, when an organization is more differentiated, resulting in high equivocality, we anticipate that analytics will be more effective in driving positive outcomes. To test this theory, we studied how clinical healthcare analytics influenced experiential quality (akin to patient satisfaction) in over 3,000 hospitals across nine years. Our results show that analytics capabilities, on average, do improve outcomes in terms of patient experiential quality, suggesting that analytics can reduce uncertainty, but we also found evidence for the moderating role of equivocality. Specifically, as task analyzability decreases (i.e., increasing equivocality), clinical healthcare analytics becomes less effective in improving experiential quality. However, when equivocality is high because of differentiation, there is a positive relationship between clinical healthcare analytics and experiential quality but only in larger hospitals. From a managerial perspective, this study has implications for boundary conditions of data analytics in organizations. Collapse

Abstract: Information technology (IT) is a critical resource and asset for a firm’s internal operations and external interactions with outside stakeholders. This paper explores IT capabilities that enable a retailer’s value chain activities and interfaces with suppliers and customers. IT capabilities that enable the value chain activities of logistics and operations as well as those of marketing and sales are identified to examine how they influence a retailer’s implementation of value chain interfaces. Through the lens of organizational information processing theory (OIPT), we find that both IT capabilities and IT infrastructure play a pivotal role in implementing value chain interfaces but in distinctive ways. On the supplier-facing side, a retailer’s IT infrastructure and IT capabilities enabling logistics and operations are essential to its vendor-managed inventory (VMI) system. On the customer-facing side, a retailer’s e-commerce website requires IT infrastructure and IT capabilities that enable marketing and sales. Moreover, synergies are found downstream for e-commerce website that benefits from the integration of IT infrastructure and IT capabilities enabling logistics and operations while such synergies are not found upstream for VMI. This partial complementary effect is explicated by the sequential asymmetric information dependency of value chain activities. Finally, we discuss the implications of our findings for the research and practice of IT enablement and integration. Collapse

Abstract: This study aims to investigate the role of artificial intelligence (AI) driven facial recognition to enhance a value proposition by influencing different areas of services in the travel and tourism industry. We adopted semi-structured interviews to derive insights from 26 respondents. Thematic analysis reveals the development of four main themes (personalization, data-driven service offering, security and safety, and seamless payments). Further, we mapped the impact of AI- driven facial recognition to enhance value and experience for corporate guests. Findings indicate that AI-based facial recognition can facilitate the travel and tourism industry in understanding travelers’ needs, optimization of service offers, and value-based services, whereas data-driven services can be realized in the form of customized trip planning, email, and calendar integration, and quick bill summarization. This contributes to strengthening the tourism literature through the lens of organizational information processing theory. Collapse

Abstract: The use of digital technologies for extracting information from various data sources can help organisations to reduce uncertainty and improve decision-making. The increasing availability in volume, velocity, and variety of data, however, can give rise to significant risks and challenges in ensuring a high level of information quality (IQ). Pre-digital organisations can be particularly susceptive to such challenges due to their limited experience with digital technologies and IQ governance. We adopt a theory-infused interventionist research approach to assist a pre-digital multinational military organisation in navigating its digital transformation (DT) by focusing on IQ. We design and implement an IQ strategy (IQS) by drawing upon organisational information processing theory and examining how the level of IQ can affect the balance between information processing requirements and capacity. We demonstrate that an IQS that incorporates both technological, as well as IQ governance solutions, can support organisations in setting the scope of their DT, decreasing employees' resistance to change, and increasing their satisfaction, while concurrently improving organisational efficiency. Our work stresses the importance of IQ in the digital era and delineates how pre-digital organisations can navigate DT by strategically addressing IQ. Collapse

Abstract: Although mobile platform ecosystems are highly competitive environments, they provide important entrepreneurial opportunities for app developer organizations. To facilitate app innovations, platform owners regularly release platform boundary resources (PBRs) by adding novel technologies at the platform level. App developer organizations, however, face high levels of technological uncertainty as they create app-level innovations based on PBRs. We examine the effectiveness of the level of distributed sensemaking about PBRs in a context of technological uncertainty arising from either PBR's technological unrelatedness with prior PBRs or app complexity. Using a dataset of 933 PBR-based app innovations, the findings significantly contribute to our understanding of the duality between competition and cooperation in a platform ecosystem. We demonstrate that distributed sensemaking among app developers, who potentially compete against each other, is crucial for enhancing app competitive performance, especially when technological uncertainty is high. Thus, we encourage greater cooperation among app developer organizations to leverage PBRs. Collapse

Abstract: Often, the police experience scenarios with much uncertainty. These scenarios can be characterized by high time pressure, huge amounts of information, and potentially severe consequences. In this paper, we study whether artificial intelligence (AI) can be a fit for the information processing needs of the police helping them achieve situational awareness and make better decisions. Given the potential severity of police situations, AI can potentially reduce the risk of fatal outcomes and wrong decisions. Investigating this issue with police officers and AI experts as our informants, our findings suggest that our informants are positive to AI as a support tool, but more skeptical to whether AI can make an impact in their daily police work due to the complexity of their work. The importance of implementing AI to suitable tasks is emphasized. Collapse

Abstract: This study investigates how different types of "big data analytics" (BDA) usage influence organizational decision-making in the area of supply chain management (SCM). Drawing on decision-making theory and organizational information processing theory, we conceptualize two patterns of BDA usage for supply chain (SC) activities (BDA use for SC optimization and BDA use for SC learning) and report two complementary channels via which the two BDA usage patterns impact a supply chain organization's BDA-enabled decision-making capability. An analysis of questionnaire data from supply chain managers representing 157 companies based in North American suggests that BDA use for SC optimization is directly associated with better decisionmaking capability. In contrast, the influence of BDA use for SC learning does not impact decisionmaking directly but indirectly, as its effect is fully mediated by organizational integration. We discuss the implications of these findings for future academic research and for managers in practice who seek to maximize business values from BDA implementations. He served two terms as an associate editor for MIS Quarterly and currently serves as a senior editor for the Journal of the Association of Information Systems. He also serves on the editorial board of IEEE TEM and the Journal of Strategic Information Systems.Morgan Swink teaches and leads research in areas of supply chain management, innovation management, project management, and operations strategy. His current research projects address digital transformation, innovation management, servitization, visibility, collaborative integration, and financial impacts of supply management policies. Dr. Swink heads the Center for Supply Chain Innovation, a collaborative venture that engages business partners, faculty, and students. He is the former co-editor-in-chief for the Journal of Operations Management, a top academic journal, and he continues to serve in consulting and associate editor roles at several top journals. Abstract: Global businesses are leveraging their analytical capabilities to develop competence over others. This study uses Organization Information Processing Theory (OIPT) in context to explain the relationship between the smart supply chain and information system flexibility to achieve an overall greater supply chain flexibility. Also, this shows that correct deployment of information processing leads to better diffusion of information throughout the system necessary for making the supply chain more adaptive in nature. This study extends the application of OIPT theory and a better understanding of analytical data processing and theoretically grounded guidance to managers in order to achieve a higher degree of flexibility in dynamic conditions. The Partial Least Square Method based on Structural Equation Modeling is used to empirically test the theoretical framework. Results from the analysis of 150 respondents indicate the strong relationship between the components of the smart supply chain and information systems agility. The research shows a positive relationship between the characteristics of smart supply chain management and modules of information system flexibility which leads to the achievement of a high level of supply chain flexibility. Abstract: An empirical link between organizational performance and the IT necessary to enable data analytics capabilities has not yet been established. Drawing from organization information processing theory (OIPT), which argues that uncertainty and equivocality negatively impact organizational performance, we construct a model in which performance—measured as hospitals’ patient satisfaction—is a function of clinical analytics capabilities, complexity, and concentration. Our argument is that clinical analytics is an uncertaintyreducing mechanism that directly impacts satisfaction. However, we propose a nuanced moderating role of complexity of patient cases and concentration (the mix of procedures performed in a hospital). We show that analytics capabilities increased patient satisfaction, but we also find evidence for the moderating role of complexity on the effect of analytics on satisfaction. The result for the moderating impact of concentration was not significant; however, our post-hoc analysis indicated that the moderating effect was present in larger hospitals. Collapse

Abstract: The management of digital innovations represents a major challenge for organizations, because they evolve in non-linear, reflexive, and distributed ways. Since digital innovations’ logic is so different, the demands regarding institutionalized anchoring of the innovation management function may be substantially different. However, there has been little attention to organizational design’s role aimed at building appropriate structures to accommodate digital innovation management. Drawing on the organizational information-processing theory, we address this gap by proposing a conceptual framework to understand the interplays between organizational design and digital innovations’ logic. Our framework proposes that, depending on their combination with others, organizational design strategies may have either positive or negative effects on digital innovation performance, and that they may appear in configurations that exhibit high and low performance. It further suggests that while the general ability to innovate is context-specific, multiple configurations of strategies may be equally effective in the same setting. Our paper contributes to the field, since it enables us to achieve a theoretically framed understanding of a key contemporary phenomenon and helps us to identify ideal-type configurations of digital innovation management.
