Abstract: Data-driven predictions have become an inseparable part of business decisions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has started helping the product and support teams perform more accurate experiments in various business settings. This study proposes a framework for businesses based on inductive learnings related to success and barriers shared on social media platforms. Our goal is to analyse the signals emerging from these conversational opinions from the early adoption of AI, with a focus towards facilitators and barriers faced by teams. Factors like efficiency, innovation, business research, product novelty, manual intervention, adaptability, emotion, support, personal growth, experiential learning, fear of failure and fear of upgradation have been identified based on an exploratory study and then a confirmatory study. We present the learnings through a roadmap for practitioners. This study contributes to the IS literature by delineating AI as a determinant of success and introduces a lot of organizational factors into the model. Collapse

Abstract: Blockchain technology has enabled the emergence of decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) with consensus-based governance. Staking governs DAOs instead of centralized authorities. As a new organizing form, DAOs require careful theoretical consideration. We conceptualize the vehicle of consensusbased governance as digital consensus. Using an agent-based simulation model, this paper aims to extend meta-organization theory to incorporate an organizational learning perspective. We benchmark the DAOs using two well-established organizing forms, namely autonomous and hierarchical organizations. We find that hierarchies outperform DAOs in static environments, whereas DAOs outperform hierarchies in turbulent environments, with autonomies only excelling with intensive experimentation. Our analyses allow us to characterize DAOs as evolving through a staggered process of polarization and homogenization, as opposed to autonomies' continuous polarization and hierarchies' continuous homogenization. Such a staggered process can be affected by several factors (e.g., voting thresholds, token asymmetry, and contributor incentives). Collapse

Abstract: This study develops artifact and design principles for a campus-wide crisis management system amid the COVID19 pandemic and beyond. Drawing upon crisis management literature and the uncertainty reduction theory, we develop a preliminary crisis management system with three fundamental components: dashboard, portal, and forum, geared toward aggregating environmental information, expert knowledge, and stakeholder insights. This immediate, integrated, and interactive campus crisis management system aims to promote organizational learning through knowledge acquisition, dissemination, and utilization while reducing stakeholders’ uncertainty about the crisis. Through comprehensive evaluation, we further synthesize and summarize new design principles for prospective artifacts, including constructing a distributed crisis management network, capitalizing on data mining and knowledge discovery algorithms, and developing the adaptability of the crisis management system in various circumstances. Abstract: Organizational learning is a fundamental process that defines organizational behavior and thereby strongly influences organizational performance. As organizations increasingly adopt machine learning (ML) systems in their routines, the need to illuminate the impact of learning machines on organizational learning processes becomes increasingly urgent. In particular, due to their highly interdisciplinary and collaborative nature, ML developments-as organizations' activities aimed at creating productively usable ML systems-may hereby represent an important but not yet well understood mechanism for fostering organizational learning. To explore how ML developments affect organizational learning processes, we interviewed 42 experts who are frequently involved in ML developments. Our findings suggest that ML developments can enhance organizational learning by stimulating a variety of organizational learning processes that generate a wealth of explicit and tacit knowledge in organizations. Abstract: The adoption of new Information Technology (IT) innovations has led to increased uncertainty among employees, a greater demand for security measures, and more entry points for cyber-attacks, which all increase the risk of data breaches for firms. Despite the prevalence of discussions around this issue, there has been a lack of empirical research examining the data breach risk associated with IT innovations. To address this gap, we have developed arguments based on an organizational learning theoretical framework that explains how IT innovativeness can exacerbate data breach risk. Through our analysis of a sample of data breaches that occurred between 2013 and 2021, we have discovered that there is a positive association between firm IT innovativeness and the risk of data breaches. We also find that the effects of IT innovativeness can vary under certain conditions. For example, we find that the positive relationship between IT innovativeness and data breach risk is mitigated when managers possess IT expertise or when firms have established extensive board connections with cybersecurity managers. Moreover, we find that the relationship between IT innovativeness and data breach risk is amplified in complex environments but not in dynamic or munificent ones. This study takes the lead in advancing the theoretical understanding and empirical validation of security-related risks associated with IT innovations. Moreover, our findings serve as a timely reminder for research and practice to carefully consider the implications of introducing novel technologies into firms and the potential dark side consequences that may arise. Additionally, this study underscores the importance of understanding organizational learning in risk assessment and change management, as well as the critical role of contextual factors in moderating the unintended security-related consequences linked to IT innovations. Abstract: Digitalization is encouraging an increasing number of firms to design their business models based on information technology (IT) for exploring business opportunities. This study examines the effect of the balance (imbalance) between IT exploration and exploitation on novelty-centered business model design (NBMD) and efficiencycentered business model design (EBMD). Using matched data from the IT-related executive and chief execu tive officer of 183 firms, this study finds that IT exploration is positively related to NBMD and EBMD and that IT exploitation is positively related to only EBMD. NBMD and EBMD are significantly related to firm performance. Polynomial regression and response surface analysis reveal that NBMD and EBMD first decline and then rise with the increase in the level of balance between IT exploration and exploitation. NBMD declines but EBMD rises with the increase in the level of imbalance between IT exploration and exploitation. This study contributes to the understanding on leveraging IT capability to influence the business model design and firm performance. Collapse

Abstract: Organizational learning theory has long examined how organizations learn to perform better as they accumulate experience. Although experience accumulation is inherently related to the timing of the repeated activities carried out by an organization, the direct relationship between activity timing and organizational learning has not been examined explicitly in the literature and remains an open question. Organizational learning theory contains two competing perspectives on how timing should impact learning—one suggesting that iterating faster is better for learning and one suggesting that taking more time between iterations is more helpful. Here, we reconcile these perspectives and develop a theory about the boundary conditions between them, arguing that, in general, iterating more rapidly enhances learning but that iterations of novel or complex activities, or ones following recent failure, benefit from a slower pace. We conduct tests of this theoretical perspective using data from the entire history of the orbital satellite launch industry from 1957–2017, and we find broad support for our theory and hypotheses. Abstract: Recent scholarship has established several ways in which external hiring—versus filling a role with a comparable internal candidate—is detrimental to firms. Yet, organizational learning theory suggests that external hires benefit firms: by importing knowledge that is unavailable or obscured to insiders and applying it toward experimentation and risky recombination. Accordingly and consistent with studies of learning by hiring and innovation, we predict that external hires are at greater risk of intrapreneurship than internal hires. We test this prediction via a study of product managers in large technology companies. We use machine learning to operationalize intrapreneurship by comparing product manager job descriptions with the founding statements of venture-backed technology entrepreneurs. Our research design employs coarsened exact matching to balance pretreatment covariates between product managers who arrived at their roles internally versus externally. The results of our analysis indicate that externally hired product managers are substantially more intrapreneurial than observably equivalent internal hires. However, we also find that intrapreneurial product managers have a higher turnover rate, an effect that is primarily driven by external hires. This suggests that hiring for intrapreneurship may be a difficult strategy to sustain. Abstract: Prior studies show the importance of social media in facilitating both exploitative learning and exploratory learning. The central concern is how the usage of social media influences the blend of both exploitative learning and exploratory learning –known as ambidextrous learning – and the survival of early internationalizing firms. The theoretical discussion in this paper centres on international entrepreneurship, social media usage, and ambidexterity literature. We developed a conceptual model that explains the underlying mechanisms through which social media drives ambidextrous learning and survival.
