Abstract: Corporate open source governance aims to manage the increasing use of free/libre and open source software (FLOSS) in companies. To avoid the risks of the ungoverned use, companies need to establish processes addressing license compliance, component approval, and supply chain management (SCM). We proposed a set of industry-inspired best practices for supply chain management organized into a handbook. To evaluate the handbook, we ran a one-year case study at a large enterprise software company, where we performed semi-structured interviews, workshops, and direct observations. We assessed the initial situation of open source governance, the implementation of the proposed SCM best practices, and the resulting impact. We report the results of this study by demonstrating and discussing the artifacts created while the case study company implemented the SCM-focused governance process. The evaluation case study enabled the real-life application and the improvement of the proposed best practices. Collapse

Abstract: Hypercompetitive mobile app stores are characterized by rapid innovation and intense competition. App firms must vie for temporary competitive advantage through competitive actions such as releasing product improvements. We study how competitive indicators influence a particular competitive actionapp updates-in a mobile game app market. Our results reveal that app firms take action to improve or sustain their temporary competitive advantage, updating their apps when there are opportunities to capitalize on popularity (e.g., rank and rating volume are increasing) and when their apps' advantages are threatened (e.g., customer ratings are decreasing). We also find that app updates are released in response to competitors' actions-specifically, when competitors update their apps and new competitors enter ranking lists. Moreover, our findings show that app firms release app updates when an app's customer rating volume is increasing or when an app firm's portfolio of game apps is less diverse, relative to its competitors. We conduct additional analyses that show that older app firms are responsive to more competitive indicators than younger ones and major updates are primarily used to respond to serious threats to apps' competitive positions. Overall, our results indicate that app updates are competitive actions used to improve or sustain temporary advantage when competitive indicators reveal opportunities to improve or threats to apps' competitive positions. Abstract: Extracting useful knowledge from multimodal data is the core of many multimedia applications, such as recommendation systems, and cross-modal retrieval. In this paper, we propose a label-based multimodal topic (LB-MMT) model to jointly model text and image data tagged with multiple labels. Specifically, we use the labels as supervised information to generate the text and image data. In the LB-MMT model, we assume that the textual words and visual words related to each text and image are drawn from a mixture of latent topics, where each topic is represented as a group of textual words and visual words. Moreover, we introduce multiple topics for each label, to build the top-down relationship from label to text and image. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, we conduct extensive experiments on a real-world multimodal dataset with labels. The re­ sults show the proposed approach obtains superior performances on topic coherence and label prediction compared with previous competitors. In addition, we show that our model yields interesting insights about multimodal topics. The proposed model provides important practical implications, e.g., designing more attrac­ tive multimodal contents for marketers. Collapse

Abstract: This paper investigates the impact of an active learning exercise designed to help undergraduate IT/IS (Information Technology/Information Systems) and business students recognize the importance of a common domain vocabulary for collaboration in the ambiguous settings which will be endemic in their careers as IT/IS professionals. We provide preliminary results to promote further research. We also investigated and assessed the robustness of our learning exercise with students with high exam performance and with low performance, and with students in the US and China, all showing improved recognition of the importance of a common domain vocabulary for collaboration. We present relevant literature, provide a detailed description of our active learning exercise, discuss our preliminary findings, identify limitations, and suggest future research. Collapse

Abstract: Open source software relies on the contributions of developers who participate voluntarily in projects. While prior research has investigated social characteristics, relations, and connections that influence a developer's participation, we argue that the technical relations and connections of projects, which emerge through dependencies between packages in software ecosystems, play a focal role in that decision as well. We empirically test these assertions by applying stochastic actor-oriented models to an affiliation network in the JavaScript software ecosystem. Our results show that while the number of dependencies of a project does not influence participation, developers are more likely to participate in projects to which their own projects have dependency relations. This study thereby contributes to the understanding of antecedents that influence developers' participation decisions by highlighting the importance of project interdependencies in software ecosystems. Abstract: Organizations leverage several approaches for creating software applications that meet the requirements of specific contexts. Besides well-researched approaches like software development, outsourcing, or customizing commercial software packages, low-code platforms today offer a new approach for creating software. The low-code approach allows to develop software without or with limited actual coding by combining executable software components into workflows. While the low-code approach simplifies software development and reduces effort and time, we lack explanations on why organizations adopt it, and which challenges are associated with its adoption. We, therefore, investigate the adoption of the low-code approach based on the technology-organization-environment framework. We identified ten aspects supporting and six aspects hindering the adoption of the low-code approach. For practice, we propose a model that can assist organizations in determining the adequacy for adopting the low-code approach. Collapse

Abstract: Software is instrumental to the accelerated pace of digital innovation, and our ability to rapidly develop and deliver digital products and services is largely based on the reuse of existing software. In recent years, packaged software reuse has emerged as an important phenomenon driving the creation of new software, both proprietary and open source, as well as the emergence and evolution of entire software ecosystems. Arguing that our theoretical understanding of the nature and the magnitude of current packaged software reuse practice remains limited, our objective with this research commentary is twofold. First, we draw attention to the importance of packaged software reuse and its relevance as a promising phenomenon of interest for information systems (IS) researchers. Second, we mobilize the concept of generativity to conceptualize packaged software as a form of technological innovation that fosters large-scale (re)combination and propose complex adaptive systems (CAS) as a theoretical foundation to help us engage with the current nature of the phenomenon. Using key principles of CAS as the generative foundation for our conceptual scaffolding, we offer a research framework for packaged software reuse and develop an agenda for IS research organized across three main axes. For each axis, we outline relevant research themes and research questions leveraging the nature of software as objects constituted of other pieces of software developed and maintained by heterogeneous groups of software developers. Abstract: Digital identities (eID) are one of the crucial building blocks of a digital infrastructure. There are major differences between countries of the European Union when it comes to the success of digital identity infrastructure, yet, we lack insights into the conditions for successful digital identity infrastructure evolution (eID evolution success). Taking the outset in a digital infrastructure perspective, we conducted 18 expert interviews in the context of the European Union with the focal case of the eID infrastructure in Germany. We used the grounded theory method to develop a model of eID evolution success. We discuss how the model can be useful to governments, practitioners and researchers alike. Collapse
