Abstract: Recommendations of algorithms are frequently superior to human judgment, but humans often fail to seize the full potential of algorithms. Research has made initial advances to increase the use of algorithmic advice, but achieved levels remain far from optimal. However, research has not yet considered user personality traits to develop interventions to increase the use of algorithms. We propose to communicate the algorithmic advice via a persuasive message that fits the user's regulatory focus, i.e., the tendency towards promotion-versus prevention focus, to create regulatory fit. To test our hypotheses, we conduct an experiment with a forecasting task and 605 participants. Results support a positive effect of a persuasive message on the use of algorithmic advice. Further, results do not support a regulatory fit effect. Our article adds to theory and practice by developing and empirically testing novel interventions to increase the use of algorithms. Abstract: An online social network is a key platform through which innovation diffuses. To learn about innovativeness, we simultaneously investigate two Twitter networks, the relationships network, following-follower relationships, and the activity network, the flow of tweets. Specifically, the innovativeness relations to the networks' indegree and outdegree, the volume of platform use, and the profile's age. The more active and central the user, the earlier the adoption. Innovativeness increases with the number of followers only when at least several of them adopt the innovation. Surprisingly, having more followees is linked to later engagement with the innovation. This association is mediated by the number of adopters' followees. Those who created a Twitter profile later are also more likely to adopt innovations later. This study is novel in distinguishing between the two networks and analyzing their interactions. Its contribution lies in identifying the innovativeness of users in an online social network platform diffusion. Collapse

Abstract: Conversational Agents (CAs) are becoming part of our everyday lives. About 10 percent of users display aggressive behavior toward CAs, such as swearing at them when they produce errors. We conducted two online experiments to understand user aggression toward CAs better. In the first experiment, 175 participants used either a humanlike CA or a non-humanlike CA. Both CAs worked without errors, and we observed no increased frustration or user aggression. The second experiment (with 201 participants) was the focus of this study; in it, both CAs produce a series of errors. The results show that frustration with errors drives aggression, and users with higher impulsivity are more likely to become aggressive when frustrated. The results also suggest that there are three pathways by which perceived humanness influences users' aggression to CAs. First, perceived humanness directly increases the frustration with the CA when it produces errors. Second, perceived humanness increases service satisfaction which in turn reduces frustration. Third, perceived humanness influences the nature of aggression when users become frustrated (i.e., users are less likely to use highly offensive words with a more humanlike CA). Our research contributes to our theoretical understanding of the role of anthropomorphism in the interaction with machines, showing that designing a CA to be more humanlike is a double-edged sword—both increasing and decreasing the frustration that leads to aggression—and also a means to reduce the most severe aggression. Abstract: There is a growing interest in understanding the role of genetics in explaining heterogeneity in behaviors, including those related to information systems (IS). The majority of the recent genetics research focuses on searching the entire genome in genome-wide association studies (GWASs) to link DNA to human traits. The results of GWASs can be used on datasets to compute a measure of genetic propensity known as a polygenic score, or PGS. PGSs are widely viewed as the future of genetics research. We conducted an exploratory study, in the context of information technology (IT) use, to examine if the PGS approach can be used to better understand the role of genetics in IS research. Consistent with our hypotheses, genetic endowments associated with Educational Attainment and General Cognition positively predict technology use, and genetic endowments associated with Neuroticism, Depressive Symptoms, Myocardial Infarction, and Coronary Artery Disease negatively predict technology use more than half a century later (genetic endowments are established at conception and our sample consists of individuals aged 50 to 80). Many of the characteristics known to be associated with heterogeneity in IT use (e.g., trust, education) appear to be mediators linking PGSs to IT use. Nonetheless, a number of PGSs maintain meaningful direct effects.This appendix 26 provides additional background and details on molecular genetics, and some of the major issues surrounding the construction and use of GWASs and PGSs. For readers interested in learning more, we recommend Browne and Walden's (2020) Appendix A for additional details on molecular genetics and the structure of DNA, Duncan et al. Abstract: Although voice is communication that is intended to benefit the performance of collectives, little is known about the benefits or costs to individual task performance and what mechanisms drive these effects. Our research offers new theory to articulate and illustrate the conditions under which voice has positive versus negative effects on individual task performance by directly acknowledging that employees have many options for where to direct their ideas. We introduce an agency perspective on voice by theorizing that one fundamental reason why employees speak up is to generate the implementation of corrective action for issues affecting themselves and to the extent targets of voice have agency to facilitate action through implementation of voice, voicing employees should be more likely to realize performance benefits from speaking up. In a first field study, we present evidence that two characteristics—the hierarchical position of the voice target (boss versus peer) and the competence of the voice target—alter the relationship between voice and the voicing employee’s task performance. In a second field study, using an event-contingent design, we provide evidence of the unique mechanisms underlying how competent managers (via their resources) and competent peers (via their efficacy to act) affect how upward and sideways voices lead to idea implementation. We discuss the theoretical implications of these ideas and findings by highlighting how voice target characteristics influence not just the incidence of voice but also, its outcomes. Abstract: The decision on which hotel to book is a high-cost process for individuals and even more for groups due to the information explosion on online travel agent platforms. To assist group selecting the optimal hotel that meets the majority affective expectations, this study proposes a group hotel selection frame for booking with Kansei text mining and consensus coordinating. Firstly, to quantify the tourists’ affective needs for hotels, a Kansei-related dictionary towards hotel domain is constructed by Kansei text mining. Secondly, the bilattice-based Kansei score of hotels is defined and measured to represent hotel affective information scientifically. Then, a group consensus model with minimum adjustment cost is introduced to coordinate consistency of individual preferences in a tourist group. Moreover, a group hotel ranking based on group affective preference is interactively generated to meet the group personalized demands. Finally, a case study on Trip.com is conducted to demonstrate the proposed method. Collapse

Abstract: Cyberloafing is a prevalent phenomenon in organisations that may cause serious problems. In previous studies, cyberloafing has been studied as planned and intentional behaviour. Interestingly, we have observed that cyberloafing frequently happens when employees use smartphones to assist with work tasks, but they may not necessarily intend to engage in this activity. We distinguish between active and passive cyberloafing and focus on studying the latter. Based on dual-systems theory, we introduce the construct of mindfulness in the exploration of the antecedences and internal mechanism of passive cyberloafing. We conducted a research survey with employees who use smartphones to assist with work tasks and collected 474 valid questionnaires to examine our research model. The results showed that dual systems are associated with cyberloafing by influencing mind-wandering, and mindfulness significantly decreased mind-wandering when using a smartphone. This study analyses cyberloafing from an innovative neuroscience perspective and contributes to the literature by proposing a new classification of cyberloafing behaviour, reveals the internal mechanism of how dual systems impact an individual’s behaviour, and introduces mindfulness as an antecedent factor of dual systems. Abstract: This study addresses two critical research gaps in human-robot interaction (HRI): the limited systematic research on the role of trust in customers’ acceptance of artificially intelligent (AI) robots; and the lack of understanding of robot acceptance under different cultural backgrounds. Drawing on the AIDUA framework, this study examines the impacts of trust and moderating effects of both national (the U.S. and China) and individual culture on customers’ intentions to use AI robots in hospitality services by developing a theoretical model. The model is tested on data collected using online data collection platforms from 491 U.S. and 495 Chinese respondents. PLSSEM and the bootstrapping method were used to test the hypothesized relationships and analyze the moderating effects of culture, respectively. The findings suggest that trust in interaction with AI robots is a significant higherorder construct that influences the intention of use. Furthermore, uncertainty avoidance, long-term orientation, and power distance have been found to exhibit significant moderation effects. The results of this study extend the theoretical frameworks in HRI and provide detailed guidance to promote AI robot applications across different cultures. Collapse
