Abstract: There are many uncertainties and ambiguities in the design of future-oriented artifacts. Societal and environmental developments are unclear; technologies not ready; target users not accessible. Nevertheless, designing future-oriented artifacts provides opportunities to either create radical innovations that present a competitive advantage, or to engage with relevant stakeholders in a speculative way. This paper provides a framework for developing, discussing, and evaluating future-oriented artifacts, which was developed based on literature and conceptual theorizing. It consists of a process model and a morphological box, outlining eight categories of relevance along with several options to choose from. Subsequently, we applied the framework to an existing future design project to illustrate its applicability. The framework spans the space of possible design and evaluation approaches and, hence, provides a guiding schema for researchers and practitioners to discuss the potentials and implications of design concepts for future-oriented artifacts. Abstract: This article theorises the IT artifact using a new conceptualisation of IT Spirit that highlights the interrelationships between IT Features, Affordances, and Symbolic Expressions. Although these concepts have been discussed in the IS literature, researchers have mostly examined them independently. Drawing on the philosophical theories of Aristotle and Heidegger, this article discusses the “essence of technology” by conceptualising the IT artifact in terms of the intertwining relationships that exist between IT Features, their Symbolic Expressions, the Affordances connected to them at different levels of abstraction, and the Values that emerge from the enactment of their action possibilities within a user group. It is argued that these essential components of the IT artifact operate at variant levels of abstraction, instigate user sense-making, and subsequently form the overarching IT Spirit. The latter is presented as the incorporeal essence of a technology that shapes – and is itself shaped by – user sense-making and appropriation. With the emphasis that it gives to human values, the concept of IT Spirit offers researchers a high-level unit of analysis to tackle the IT artifact and a systematic framework that facilitates the identification of its prominent action possibilities. Abstract: A variety of organizations around the world use complex information systems (e.g., enterprise resource planning and supply chain management systems). However, poor usability caused by system complexity continues to frustrate users and damage the reputation of these systems. In this study, we address usability issues with complex information systems from the human-computer collaboration perspective by modeling user-system interaction as a joint activity between the system and its users. We propose a conceptual model for user-system collaboration, elaborate on the components in the model and the relationships between the components, derive the required capabilities for collaborative information systems, and establish conceptual relationships between system collaborative behaviors and usability. We use empirical evidence gathered from a qualitative field study on ERP systems to illustrate the model and the possible impact of system collaborativeness (i.e., the presence or absence of collaborative capabilities) on usability. We do so to provide a strong conceptual foundation for modeling user-system collaboration and to encourage designers to employ the collaboration metaphor during system design and, thus, help them develop future complex information systems with better usability. Abstract: Unethical information technology (IT) use, related to activities such as hacking, software piracy, phishing, and spoofing, has become a major security concern for individuals, organizations, and society in terms of the threat to information systems (IS) security. While there is a growing body of work on this phenomenon, we notice several gaps, limitations, and inconsistencies in the literature. In order to further understand this complex phenomenon and reconcile past findings, we conduct an exploratory study to uncover the nomological network of key constructs salient to this phenomenon, and the nature of their interrelationships. Using a scenario-based study of young adult participants, and both linear and nonlinear analyses, we uncover key nuances of this phenomenon of unethical IT use. We find that unethical IT use is a complex phenomenon, often characterized by nonlinear and idiosyncratic relationships between the constructs that capture it. Overall, ethical beliefs held by the individuals, along with economic, social, and technological considerations are found to be relevant to this phenomenon. In terms of practical implications, these results suggest that multiple interventions at various levels may be required to combat this growing threat to IS security. Collapse

Abstract: A core focus of Collaboration Engineering (CE) research has been to design and deploy codified fundamental building blocks (artifacts) of collaboration, thus making it possible for practitioner groups to collaborate even without the help of a professional facilitator. Given the fundamentally social nature of collaboration, we believe that designing such fundamental blocks (artifacts) needs to include considerations of participants' ethical values. As such, we propose a conceptual schema for a fundamental artifact having ethical features derived from the deontological view of ethics. Based on the notions of design theory, valuesensitive design, and deontological ethics, this paper develops an object-oriented representation of an Ethical Collaboration class that can be instantiated into objects that, in turn, can serve as fundamental building blocks for ethical collaboration. Abstract: Recent developments in neurosciences are being used in several fields such as economics, marketing and other social related sciences. Neurosciences are being used in different realms, from theoretical to philosophical, and it is creating new approaches to established fields. We believe that all social sciences should look at how the neurosciences could contribute to their field. We view Information Systems as a conjunction of a Technical System and a Social System, and therefore we think that there is the need to analyze whether the neurosciences can contribute to the field. We propose two different approaches of how neurosciences could contribute to the IS field. The first one analyzes parallelisms between Neuroeconomy and Information Systems, and the second one applies the Neurophilosophical Methodology in an attempt to ground Pragmatism’s premises. Abstract: We propose a partial solution to the problem of the relevance of IS research by adjusting doctoral programs to the specific needs and talents of doctoral students, who are distinguished from traditional doctoral candidates by significant prior professional life experiences. The purpose of this paper is first to clarify the concept of "professionally qualified doctoral students" (PQDS). Next we examine the epistemic evidence for the claim that practical experience constitutes a specific type of "applicative" knowledge that should be considered as different but of equal value as theory, which has been the mainstay of academic education. Three independent lines of academic research have contributed such evidence: neurological brain research, the communities of practice literature and the philosophical discussion on applicative knowledge. We enumerate some reasons why qualitative research may be the most effective research methodology for PQDS. Finally we outline some key principles for adjusting doctoral programs. Collapse
