Abstract: Despite the increasing attention and research effort, how to protect sensitive information from shoulder surfing attacks is still under studied. Existing methods for protecting sensitive textual content on users' screens from shoulder surfing attacks have various limitations, including ineffectiveness, insufficient protection of sensitive information, low usability, and high cognitive workload. To address those limitations, this paper proposes, develops, and evaluates a new solution called "detection and labeling" (D&L), which uses NLP techniques to automatically detect and label sensitive information in the textual content. The labeled and hidden sensitive information is then read to users through their headphones upon their clicking a label. Evaluation results demonstrate that D&L improves protection, enhances usability, reduces users' cognitive workload, and allows faster browsing speed compared to the baseline methods. Collapse

Abstract: Informative online ratings enable digital platforms to reduce the search cost for buyers to find good sellers. However, rating inflation, a phenomenon in which average rating increases and rating variance across listings decreases, threatens the informativeness of ratings. We empirically identify the consequences of rating inflation by conducting a quasi-experiment with a digital platform that exogenously changed its rating display rule in a treated neighborhood, which resulted in rating inflation. Using a differences-in-differences approach, we find that platforms benefit from one aspect of rating inflation: user purchases and seller sales increase because of the increased average rating. However, they also face negative consequences: rating inflation causes a decrease in user trial and a greater concentration of sales among popular restaurants. Abstract: We conducted a field experiment to compare the effects of information systems (IS) supporting reflective disclosure and information democratization on the sustainability footprint of a routine organizational work practice, paper printing. We find that both sensemaking processes lead to employees reducing their printing; however, the processes are interchangeable and do not mutually reinforce each other’s effects. This finding contrasts a latent assumption of prior research about a co-dependence between reflective disclosure and infor­ mation democratization, and suggests organizations have a choice in how they can design and use IS to help employees make sense of different possibilities for more eco-efficient work. Abstract: Text-based customer service is emerging as an important channel through which companies can assist customers. However, the use of few identity cues may cause customers to feel limited social presence and even suspect the human identity of agents, especially in the current age of advanced algorithms. Does such a lack of social presence affect service interactions? We studied this timely question by evaluating the impact of customers' perceived social presence on service outcomes and customers' attitudes toward agents. Our identification strategy hinged on Southwest Airlines' sudden requirement to include a first name in response to service requests on Twitter, which enhanced customers' perceived level of social presence. This change led customers to become more willing to engage and more likely to reach a resolution upon engagement. We further conducted a randomized experiment to understand the underlying mechanisms. We found that the effects were mainly driven by customers who were ex ante uncertain or suspicious about the human identity of agents, and the presence of identity cues improved service outcomes by enhancing customers' perceived levels of trust and empathy. Additionally, we found no evidence of elevated verbal aggression from customers toward agents with identity cues, although a mechanism test revealed the moderating role of customers' emotional states. Our study highlights the importance of social presence in text-based customer service and suggests a readily available and almost costless strategy for firms: signal humanization through identity cues. Abstract: An innovating organization faces the challenge of how to prioritize distinct goals of novelty and value, both of which underlie innovation. Popular practitioner frameworks like Agile management suggest that organizations can adopt an iterative approach of frequent meetings to prioritize between these goals, a practice we refer to as iterative coordination. Despite iterative coordination’s widespread use in innovation management, its effects on novelty and value in innovation remain unknown. With the information technology firm Google, we embed a field experiment within a hackathon software development competition to identify the effect of iterative coordination on innovation. We find that iterative coordination causes firms to implicitly prioritize value in innovation: Although iteratively coordinating firms develop more valuable products, these products are simultaneously less novel. Furthermore, by tracking software code, we find that iteratively coordinating firms favor integration at the cost of knowledge-creating specialization. A follow-on laboratory study documents that increasing the frequency and opportunities to reprioritize goals in iterative coordination meetings reinforces value and integration, while reducing novelty and specialization. Abstract: Multi-channel human-computer interaction offers a new perspective for optimization research in the digital museum, though there is no empirical evidence on how these factors affect cognition. This paper conducted a controlled experiment using the audio guide as a breakthrough point, aiming to determine the cognitive changes before and after the audio-visual dual-channel interaction. The results demonstrate that adding the auditory channel brought more cognitive load but not better cognitive outcomes. This paper evaluated the reasons behind it and noted that designing channels based solely on technical feasibility is undesirable, with suggestions pro­ posed for museum practitioners and platform developers. Abstract: This study represents ongoing research to investigate the impact of self-avatar beautification on consumers' willingness to pay for products virtually tried on with a beautified avatar. Avatars are the primary means of representing users in the rapidly growing market for commercial metaverse applications, such as apparel and accessories try-on. Based on self-congruity theory and appraisal theory, we argue that beautified self-avatars are congruent with users' ideal selves and elicit identification and positive emotions, resulting in increased willingness to pay. We present preliminary findings that support the notion that beautified avatars promote the ideal self and result in greater willingness to pay than realistic avatars. With these findings we contribute to research on avatar design and commerce in metaverses, by challenging the recognised notion that self-avatars should be as realistic as possible and establishing avatar beautification as a novel design objective in metaverse marketing. Abstract: The Industrial-Metaverse will create interactions between the physical and virtual worlds to extend operations in the physical industry. This particularity and the demand for increasing immersion in the Metaverse require using XR technologies called User-Metaverse interfaces (UMI). How such a UMI must be designed for the industrial-Metaverse is unknown. This study adopts a design science approach to design a UMI based on social-cognitive theory (SCT). According to SCT, creating user-generated Metaverse content is crucial to the UMI design. It empowers users to generate content through their efforts, leading to higher self-efficacy and user engagement. We formulate two theoretically based design principles and instantiate a software artifact, which we evaluate in a laboratory experiment with 57 participants. Our study shows the importance of belief in success in the design of future UMI. Furthermore, our design principles show significant positive outcome expectations of users in their interaction with the software artifact. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the potential of augmented reality (AR) to support and guide complex industrial tasks, the technology is still not broadly applied. One possible reason for this is that the creation of AR content is highly complex and requires programming skills and deep spatial knowledge. AR authoring tools can help address this complexity by enabling non-developers to create self-sufficient AR content. Therefore, this paper proposes a theory-driven design for AR authoring tools that allows non-developers to create self-sufficient AR-based instructions to support complex tasks. Based on ten interviews with experts working with AR authoring tools and a following focus group with eight participants, we propose three design principles for future AR authoring tools in the engineering context. These design principles are instantiated in two prototypes of different richness and evaluated in an experiment with 23 students. Our study shows that the cognitive load is slightly increased when using the extensive AR authoring tool, but it also shows that significantly better results can be achieved with the extensive AR authoring tool. We contribute by providing design principles for AR authoring tools for creating AR-based instructions, which extend the existing AR authoring research in the industrial context. Collapse

Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of online learning. As learner autonomy is relatively high in online environments, learners must engage in self-regulated learning (SRL) to achieve optimal learning outcomes. Because most learners are unable to consistently engage in SRL, gamification interventions are being implemented to improve SRL engagement; however, mixed results cast doubt on the efficacy of this approach. Massively open online courses (MOOCs), a type of online learning environment, are currently experiencing rapid growth due to widespread adoption by many institutions. In MOOCs, there is no instructor intervention; hence, students have difficulty regulating their own learning and are easily distracted. Therefore, this study investigates whether mixed-research results regarding the efficacy of gamification can be attributed to lack of attention to individual learner traits during design. For this purpose, the study analyzes MOOCs as an instance of online learning by applying SRL theory and gamification principles. We altered a traditional MOOC platform to provide different types of gamified performance feedback to facilitate learners’ SRL engagement. We then examined whether this matched with goal orientation, an individual learner trait to influence SRL and learning outcomes. Using learning-analytics tools, we tracked 760 college students’ SRL engagement on a MOOC platform over five weeks. As theorized, SRL engagement and learning outcomes of participants who had a strong performance-avoidance goal orientation increased with positively framed performance feedback that involved no social comparisons; however, the same feedback had a negative impact on participants with a strong mastery goal orientation. Our findings add to SRL theory by demonstrating that gamification designs can enhance SRL engagement and learning outcomes in online learning, but with a caveat—this occurs only when there is a match with learner traits—confirming the gamification principle stating that task improvements and meaningful engagement can only occur through thoughtful gamification design.History: Raghu Santanam, Senior Editor; J.
