Abstract: This editorial has two purposes. First, we address why a focus on doing impactful research that creates public value is vital for the present and the future of the information systems (IS) field. Second, we outline practices we have used to build research programs that promote the study of strategic IS opportunities and challenges to create public value.The published focus of the Journal of Strategic Information Systems is "… on the strategic management, business and organizational issues associated with the introduction and utilization of information systems….and the incorporation of IT into organizations' strategic thinking, strategy alignment [and] organizational arrangements…". As such, the journal is not interested in information systems in isolation, but rather in the larger impact of information systems on the organization, and concomitantly, on society more broadly. Guy Gable, former Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for JSIS quotes an unnamed scholar who said, "I personally find it unethical, if research is not driven by some type of relationship to 'contribution of 'societal value'. This is something we have forgotten and neglected in our frantic race for publishing more and getting a higher h-index … Without contribution to attainment of societal values, the IS field does not have any meaning, and should be eradicated" (Gable, 2020). Abstract: The fish farming industry is one of the fastest-growing industries and will be one of the most important businesses in the future. However, more salmon than ever died prematurely in Norway in 2021, mainly due to disease and lice treatments. To improve this situation, sharing data related to lice is crucial. However, to facilitate data sharing, a platform for storing data, data comparability, and trustworthy relationships must be secured. Sharing data poses challenges that require proper governance. Based on a longitudinal, qualitative case study of a collaborative platform ecosystem in the Norwegian aquaculture industry, we identify governance mechanisms that enable data sharing and develop a model for the gradual maturation of data sharing. Our insights from a collaborative platform ecosystem within a traditional industry complement the extant research, mainly focused on centralized platform ecosystems. We also provide guidance for practitioners who want to enable data sharing in their ecosystems. Collapse

Abstract: In today's data-centric era, organizations increasingly aim to operate more data-driven and therefore engage in digital transformations toward becoming a data-driven organization (DDO). To govern such transformations, top managers develop digital transformation strategies (DTS) characterized by different organizational ambidexterity approaches. This study analyzes how such DTS influence the process and (intermediate) outcomes of organizations' digital transformations toward becoming a DDO by studying two organizations undertaking such DDO transformations using the concept of organizational ambidexterity as a theoretical lens. On this empirical basis, we find that DTS characterized by different organizational ambidexterity approaches lead to different transformation processes and (intermediate) outcomes. Thereby, this study contributes to existing academic literature in the field of DDOs and DTS, as such transformation journeys toward becoming a DDO have not been studied in its entirety yet. Furthermore, our paper offers practical guidance for top managers to develop and implement a DTS suitable for their organization. Collapse

Abstract: Stakeholder analysis is a methodology that can provide valuable insights about a phenomenon. Information systems and information technology researchers have utilized stakeholder analysis to understand and learn from successes, failures, and other aspects of IS/IT initiatives. In this tutorial, we provide guidelines for conducting a stakeholder analysis currently missing in the IS/IT discipline despite being repeatedly called for. We reviewed studies on stakeholder analysis within IS/IT first, but found that there was not sufficient coverage. Then we went outside the discipline and found relevant studies in the areas of organizational and strategic management and public policy. Our analysis, then, consists of a review and a combination of the findings of studies from within the IS/IT discipline and studies in organizational and strategic management and public policy. Our guidelines start with determining who the stakeholders are related to a phenomenon and what key concerns these stakeholders have about the phenomenon. In the next step, we relate stakeholders to one another and across the key concerns and point out how to identify possible coalitions. Last, we describe how to apply these findings to determine strategies for managing stakeholders or building theory around a phenomenon and its concerns. These final steps can be used to make policy recommendations, provide guidance for IS/IT-related initiatives, or present constructs and relationships that can be tested by future researchers. We demonstrate the applicability of our guidelines with a case study about broadband availability in rural North Carolina. Collapse

Abstract: With the latest technological developments and associated new possibilities in teaching, the personalisation of learning is gaining more and more importance. It assumes that individual learning experiences and results could generally be improved when personal learning preferences are considered. To do justice to the complexity of the personalisation possibilities of teaching and learning processes, we illustrate the components of learning and teaching in the digital environment and their interdependencies in an initial model. Furthermore, in a pre-study, we investigate the relationships between the learner's ability to (digital) self-organise, the learner's priorknowledge learning in different variants of mode and learning outcomes as one part of this model. With this pre-study, we are taking the first step towards a holistic model of teaching and learning in digital environments. Collapse

Abstract: Subscription-based crowdfunding is an emerging type of crowdfunding that is characterized by enabling regular payments from supporters to creators and a creator-centric rather than one-time project focus. To create a successful subscription-based crowdfunding outcome creators can utilize managerial levers e.g., information control and relational labor. However, thus far, little is known about how creators employ the managerial levers at their disposal and the strategic considerations behind their use. To holistically capture the utilized managerial levers and strategic considerations, we conducted semistructured interviews with 22 creators on the popular subscription-based crowdfunding platform Patreon. Our findings highlight four key managerial levers of subscription-based crowdfunding creators: information control strategies, supporter interaction strategies, supporter acquisition strategies, and supporter retention strategies. We contribute to IS literature by enabling further exploration of creators' thought processes in managing their subscription-based crowdfunding campaigns and offer practical advice to practitioners (e.g., creators and crowdfunding platforms). Abstract: The emergence of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technologies drives the offering of non-ownership business models (NOBMs) in the mechanical engineering industry. In a NOBM mechanical engineering firms as machine providers maintain machine ownership and sell their customers only the machine use and/or performance. While literature has already discussed the influence of multiple individual contextual antecedents on the decision of mechanical engineering firms whether to offer NOBMs, little is known about the interplay of these antecedents. By drawing on 16 interview-based cases and fuzzy-set Qualitative Comparative Analysis (fsQCA), we applied a configurational perspective and identified each two configurations of four key contextual antecedents (high digital service capabilities, high machine standardization, high share of large customers, and high market competition) that lead to presence or absence of NOBM offerings by mechanical engineering firms. Abstract: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nordic higher education institutions (HEIs) as any other learning providers had to abruptly switch from onsite in-person delivery strategies to a more 'pandemic-friendly' online mode. To manage these emergent transformations of learning environments successfully, development of teachers' digital competence became pivotal. This study investigates the experiences of teachers and students from HEIs in the Nordic countries of the impact of the transition to online teaching during the pandemic crisis on teachers' professional digital competence (TPDC). The findings indicate that the pandemic promoted teachers' creativity and innovation, enabling individual initiatives, openness, and decentralization that demonstrates the Nordic HEIs readiness to mobilize relevant digital infrastructure and exert academic freedom in times of crises. The study further broadens the concept of TPDC involving aspects of well-being and physical environment as additional indicators, to ensure equality, inclusion, and sustainability in the future of online education in higher education. Abstract: The rise of generative AI has been a subject of debate among researchers and practitioners regarding its effect on the labor market. While some argue that it may displace jobs, others suggest it could create new opportunities and improve productivity. This study examines the impact of the ChatGPT launch on 18,130 services with 199,430 observations using a differencein-differences approach and data from the online labor marketplace Fiverr. The findings suggest that ChatGPT had a negative effect on the demand for human content generating and editing services, with a concentration on writing services. However, there was no significant effect on the demand for editing services. The study also found that the demand for services with higher prices was more negatively affected. These results contribute to the ongoing debate on the impact of generative AI on the labor market and offer practical recommendations for service providers to navigate this new AI-driven landscape.
