Abstract: Understanding transformative digital phenomena is an ongoing research challenge for the Information Systems discipline. Digital transformation research to date investigated the phenomenon primarily from a firm-centric perspective, but did not explore how individual micro-level practices drive digital transformation more broadly. Our ethnographic study aims to address this gap by exploring how the social practices within which customers use cryptocurrencies drive digital transformation in society more broadly. We offer a theoretical contribution through a novel and inductively derived model exploring how digital transformation in a cryptocurrency context is institutionalized through use. Specifically, our model identifies 10 micro-level practices of cryptocurrency use, and demonstrates how these legitimize the digital transformation of financial services. Finally, our work provides an important empirical contribution and normative guidelines by offering much needed insights related to the emerging context of cryptocurrencies. Collapse

Abstract: This study furthers investigation into exactly how Social CRM (S-CRM) is different from traditional CRM, and models the interrelationships between its capabilities. It is underpinned in dynamic capabilities theory, to ex­ plain how social media, as a resource all organizations use, can lead to differing performance outcomes. It is underpinned in seminal research into traditional CRM, but which does not cater for the disruptive nature of social media. We outline how S-CRM is a second-order dynamic capability consistng of a set of first-order in­ tegrative dynamic capabiliies that, when properly interrelated, lead to performance outcomes. We particularly model the role of S-CRM front- and back-office technology capabilities, customer engagement initiatives, and social information processes in driving customer relationship performance. Findings show that S-CRM is dif­ ferent from traditional CRM in a range of ways in the front- and back-offices, and provide a framework for researcher and managers in information systems and marketing to operate at strategic and tactical levels within S-CRM, while being congisant of both. Abstract: Accurate demand forecasting is particularly crucial for products with short shelf life like bakery products. Over-and underestimation of customer demand affects not only profit margins of bakeries but is also responsible for 600,000 metric tons of food waste every year in Germany. To solve this problem, we develop an IT artifact based on artificial neural networks, which is automating the manual order process and capable of reducing costs as well as food waste. To test and evaluate our artifact, we cooperated with an SME bakery chain from Germany. The bakery chain runs 40 points of sale (POS) in southern Germany. After algorithm based reconstructing and cleaning of the censored sales data, we compare two different data-driven newsvendor approaches for this inventory problem. We show that both models are able to significantly improve the forecast quality (cost savings up to 30%) compared to human planners. Collapse

Abstract: In consumer and information systems research, it remains unclear how consumers consider smartphone app recommendations in the course of their decision making process that leads to product choices in the physical store. Moreover, it is unclear which type of information smartphone apps should transport to consumers and if there are any customer segmentation criteria for smartphone app design. With respect to the theoretical and managerial importance of recommendation services in the form of smartphone apps we want to shed some light on this topic. Combining literature from the fields of IS and marketing research, we hypothesize that personalized recommendations via smartphone apps can help to boost sales in physical grocery stores. Furthermore, we hypothesize that additional popularity information (in the form of “stars”) does not amplify the positive effect of personalized recommendations. In addition, we assume that the effects of recommendation usage differ for men and women. We conducted a field study with a European grocery retailer to test our hypotheses. Finally, we discuss first implications as well as central limitations of our research and present the next research steps. Collapse

Abstract: We study the assimilation of information technology by an organization establishing itself in the emerging retail industry in India. We highlight the need for conducting a holistic analysis of the assimilation process that considers the role of various organizational actors, the socio-technical environment, the exogenous factors and the historical context under which the organization is operating. We adopt strong structuration theory, a refinement of Giddens’ structuration theory, as the theoretical lens for studying the technology assimilation process. We combine this with actor network theory to incorporate the socio-technical perspectives. An organization in the Indian retail industry is selected as the empirical context. We analyzed the assimilation process as a series of conjunctures and illustrate how the socio-technical changes, the situated actions and the conjuncture’s context influence the assimilation process. We also highlight the influence of historical context, and the role of organizational actors and actants in the technology assimilation process. Collapse

Abstract: We combined the most relevant variables from the principal agent theory and the technology acceptance model to develop a parsimonious model of technology acceptance for food traceability systems, which are voluntary, direct consumer-use decision support systems that reduce health risks for consumers by reducing information asymmetry between consumers and sellers in retail settings. Results from a survey about a beef traceability system show novel findings about the important roles played by consumers’ perceived regulatory effectiveness as an exogenous antecedent, and by their trust in seller and willingness to pay a price premium as mediators, that shape their intentions to use a BTS and conduct a purchase transaction. Abstract: The phenomenon of inter-organizational information systems (IOIS) evolution has not yet been adequately researched and understood. We present and analyse empirical data from a case in which electronic ordering in the Australian pharmaceutical industry evolved over a 30-year period from closed to quasi-open systems. We analyse this revelatory case using a practice-theoretical framework to make visible the phenomenon of IOIS evolution. An essential characteristic of this framework is the distinction between and symmetrical treatment of material, normative and ideational structures within the practices that constitute the IOIS. Against the findings of this case study, we then evaluate two promising models of long-term IS change, namely Porra's (1999) Colonial Systems model and Lyytinen and Newman's (2008) Punctuated Socio-technical IS Change model. These models are selected as highly elaborated IS exemplars of two classes of theories of organizational change, namely evolutionary and dialectical theories. We find that these two models can only partially explain our findings. Finally, we make suggestions for developing more comprehensive theoretical models within these two classes of IS change theories. In practical terms, our paper shows that the transformation from closed to open IOIS may require adoption of longer time frames than are usually assumed and closer attention to norms and rationales usually neglected in IS projects. Abstract: Several threats affect the survival of small, independent retail companies. Adoption and use of Point-of-Sale (POS) systems may offer important benefits to counter these threats. POS systems are not widely used by these retailers, however. This research investigates the determinants of the adoption of POS systems using a conceptual model based on existing adoption theories. Based on this, a survey has been held among 37 Dutch small, independent retailers, to answer the question what the most important determinants for POS system adoption are. This study furthers theory on IT adoption, specifically for small organisations. The practical relevance is that its findings may help in improving POS system adoption. Collapse

Abstract: We analyse an empirical case study of an inter-organizational information system (IOIS) in the Australian pharmaceutical distribution industry, using a theoretical data coding approach, to provide a concise grounded account of changes in the material, normative and ideational structures within the participating practices over a 25 year period as the IOIS evolved from a proprietary closed system to a quasi-open shared ordering platform. We find evidence that the resilience of the IOIS over this long time period is explained by a layered accumulation of new structures at the level of individual practices, while the punctuated evolutionary change accompanied the appearance of a new practice, historically connected to the incumbent practices. These findings are in substantial agreement with systems evolution mechanisms proposed by Porra (1999). Understanding IOIS evolution will be important for the provision of key enabling information infrastructures envisioned in existing and planned ICT-mediated healthcare initiatives. Collapse

Abstract: Past research has suggested that decision-making groups, when communicating face-to-face (FtF), suffered from information sharing biases that affected the quality of the final decision: they tended to discuss previously-shared information before they started to discuss information not known to all, and discussed more of previously-shared than unshared information. In our study we examined these effects in groups that interacted FtF or using a group support system (GSS). Four-member groups discussed a requirements elicitation task in which some requirements were known to all members before starting their discussion, while other requirements were known only to two members of the group. Both GSS and FtF groups exchanged a large percentage of the shared requirements. However, the GSS groups were more effective in communicating unshared requirements. On average, FtF groups discussed shared requirements sooner and unshared requirements later than did GSS groups. Our study also compared empirical results with predictions from an information-sampling model of group discussion in order to assess the effectiveness of the model in computer-mediated group communication.
