Abstract: Online labor platforms (OLPs) use algorithms to manage their workers. Prior research has examined how OLP management shapes workers' attitudes, implicitly assuming that workers have the same preferences. However, research has largely neglected the role of (mis)fits between what workers need and what they receive from OLPs. Therefore, we conducted a survey with 121 Mechanical Turk workers and used polynomial regression analysis of workers' actual needs and perceived OLP supplies. Our results suggest that higher job security fit decreases perceived exploitation and increases system satisfaction, whereas higher compensation fit decreases perceived exploitation. In addition, we find that job security misfit has decreasing marginal effects on perceived exploitation and increasing marginal effects on system satisfaction. Overall, we contribute to a more nuanced understanding of workers' reactions to the design of OLPs by shedding light on the interplay between what gig workers need and what they perceive to receive from such platforms. Abstract: Interorganizational information systems (IOIS) are valuable tools providing platforms for information flow enabling more efficient and reliable collaboration in digitalized supply chains. An IOIS is subject to influencing factors originating in the company and environment. Inspired by complex adaptive system theory, an agent-based simulation model is designed, exploring factors affecting the integration and efficiency of IOIS. These factors are derived from resource-based view and dynamic capabilities theory. The influence on information system deployment is assessed by merging these factors into exogenous, intercompany climate, and operational dimensions. First, the results indicate that product-specific factors have a greater influence than the environment when deploying an IOIS. Second, deliberate design of IC relationships should be considered during the development of an IOIS. Third, extensive information exchange between supply chain partners might be disadvantageous for IOIS utilization. Fourth, the advantages of IOIS can be lost when completely open systems are used. Abstract: A growing body of research documents that audiences reward organizations perceived to be authentic with positive evaluations. In the current work, we adopt a mixed-methods approach—using data collected from Glassdoor.com and two experiments—to establish that perceptions of authenticity are elicited by perceived congruence between an organization’s stated values (i.e., the values it claims to hold) and its lived values (i.e., values members perceive as embodied by the organization), which in turn lead to more positive organizational evaluations. We then explore the conditions under which audiences are less likely to respond favorably to organizational authenticity, finding that the positive effects of stated-lived value congruence on evaluations are attenuated when audiences have a lower preference for stated values. Abstract: The current research sheds new light on how and why status hierarchies impact interpersonal helping by examining people’s reactions to recently experienced status change. Specifically, we incorporate findings from research on the self-serving attributional bias to theorize about how the direction of status change (i.e., a gain or a loss) can shape the extent to which people accept or deflect personal responsibility for their change in status, which we argue will then impact other-concern and, thus, their willingness to help. Further, we identify status change legitimacy as a key contingency that will strengthen or weaken the psychological and behavioral effects of status change. Among firefighter teams (Study 1), participants in the laboratory (Studies 2 and 3), and student teams (Study 4), we show that (1) status change impacts interpersonal helping through its impact on changes in other-concern and (2) status change legitimacy moderates the effect of status change on both other-concern and interpersonal helping. Additionally, we document an asymmetry with regards to the effects of status change on both other-concern and helping behavior (i.e., with the negative impact of a status loss being stronger than the positive impact of a status gain). Abstract: Due to the highly uncertain nature of the business environment, firms have been increasingly improving their supply chain resilience, especially in the context of supply chain disruptions. In this study, we examine supply chain resilience from the perspective of business-IT alignment, and further explore the moderating role of market orientation. Based on data collected from 177 firms in China, we test our model by using polynomial regression analysis and response surface methodology. Results show that a positive relationship between business-IT alignment and supply chain resilience exists, and a such relationship is further strengthened by market orien­ tation. Our study is one of the first attempts to explore the effect of business-IT alignment on supply chain resilience. The theoretical contributions and managerial implications of the current study are also discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Digitalization is encouraging an increasing number of firms to design their business models based on information technology (IT) for exploring business opportunities. This study examines the effect of the balance (imbalance) between IT exploration and exploitation on novelty-centered business model design (NBMD) and efficiencycentered business model design (EBMD). Using matched data from the IT-related executive and chief execu­ tive officer of 183 firms, this study finds that IT exploration is positively related to NBMD and EBMD and that IT exploitation is positively related to only EBMD. NBMD and EBMD are significantly related to firm performance. Polynomial regression and response surface analysis reveal that NBMD and EBMD first decline and then rise with the increase in the level of balance between IT exploration and exploitation. NBMD declines but EBMD rises with the increase in the level of imbalance between IT exploration and exploitation. This study contributes to the understanding on leveraging IT capability to influence the business model design and firm performance. Collapse

Abstract: Online consumer ratings provide important feedback for businesses and yield essential purchase information for consumers. Extant literature has recognized the importance of sequential and temporal dynamics of consumer ratings, but has shed light upon short-term dynamics (e.g., an initial decreasing rating trend) and lacks analyses of long-term dynamics. Existing findings thus cannot explain these long-term dynamics, which are particularly important as many items receive ratings over the long term. In this paper, we therefore examine long-term sequential and temporal dynamics in consumer ratings and in particular whether initial rating dynamics influence average ratings in the long-term. To do so, we apply regression models to an extensive long-term review dataset. First, we find and explain a new long-term sequentially increasing rating trend which leads to a U-shaped relationship between ratings and their order. Second, we reveal that strong initial rating dynamics have significant negative impact on long-term average ratings. Collapse

Abstract: Data breaches are a major threat to organizations from both financial and customer relations perspectives. We developed a nomological network linking post-breach compensation strategies to key outcomes, namely continued shopping intentions, positive word-of-mouth, and online complaining, with the effects being mediated by customers’ justice perceptions. We conducted a longitudinal field study investigating Target’s data breach in 2013 that affected more than 110 million customers. We examined customers’ expectations toward compensation immediately after the breach was confirmed (survey 1) and their experiences after reparations were made (survey 2). Evidence from polynomial regression and response surface analyses of data collected from 388 affected customers showed that customers’ justice perceptions were influenced by the actual compensation provided as well as the type and extent of compensation an organization could and should have provided (i.e., customers’ compensation expectations). Interestingly, both positive and negative expectation disconfirmation led to less favorable justice perceptions compared to when expectations were met. Justice perceptions were, in turn, associated with key outcomes. We discuss implications for research on data security, information systems, and justice theory. Collapse

Abstract: Despite the generally positive consequences associated with justice, recent research suggests that supervisors cannot always enact justice, and responses to justice may not be universally positive. Thus, justice is likely to vary in both how much it is received and the employee reactions it engenders. In order to understand the range of justice responses, we develop a dynamic theory of justice by using person-environment fit to take both the value that an individual places in justice and the justice they received into account. Using this framework, we clarify the consequences of congruence versus incongruence in daily justice received and valued, which have implications for treatment discrepancies and subsequent work behavior. We also identify the differences between excess and deficient justice on cognitive and affective responses to justice. Our findings reveal that employees’ experience of justice is more complicated than simply whether the justice they received was high or low on a particular day. Using experience sampling and polynomial regression methods, we observe that not all instances in which employees receive high levels of justice are equivalent. In fact, we find that, depending on justice valued, receiving high levels of justice can be just as detrimental as receiving low levels. Additionally, we find that although both forms of justice misfit (excess and deficiency) cause-negative work outcomes, they affect these outcomes through differential responses to justice — with excess causing increased rumination and deficiency causing decreased positive affect. We conclude by discussing the implications of these findings for extant justice theory and for supervisor-employee work interactions. Collapse

Abstract: The current information systems (IS) literature treats information technology (IT) ambidexterity as a single aggregated construct, assuming perfect balance or simultaneously strong IT exploration and exploitation. Taking a different perspective, we propose that IT ambidexterity can be achieved through a proportional balance between its two dimensions, and the optimal balance depends on the specific context. Based on matched-pair data from a field survey of business and IT executives, we find a three-way interaction among environmental dynamism, IT exploration, and IT exploitation such that IT ambidexterity matters only in dynamic environments. More important, through polynomial regression and response surface analysis, we find that the proportionally balanced, rather than the perfectly balanced, combinations of IT exploitation and exploration maximize organizational agility. We further demonstrate how the effect of proportional balance of IT ambidexterity varies in stable and dynamic environments. This study offers a novel understanding: IT exploration and IT exploitation do not need to be equally strong to improve agility, and their proportional balance associated with maximal agility varies across different levels of environmental dynamism. It improves the current knowledge of IT ambidexterity and makes a significant contribution to IS strategy research and practice.
