Abstract: The integration of external data offers enormous potential for new and expanded value propositions for companies. Despite this potential, organizations often hesitate to share data due to the anticipated negative consequences. This study delves into the decision-making process of organizations regarding data sharing within an ecosystem and explores strategies to motivate other organizations to share data. By combining privacy calculus and ecosystems theory, we employ a qualitative case study approach to examine the German orthopedic market. Our findings reveal three risks (weakening one's position in the ecosystem, IT alignment investments, and penalties for data protection violations) and three benefits (increased value creation for the ecosystem, competitive advantage over other ecosystems, and gaining additional transactions) that organizations perceive when contemplating data sharing. Moreover, we identify three strategies for obtaining data from other organizations: mitigating the risks, emphasizing the benefits, and bypassing the calculus. Collapse

Abstract: EditorialWelcome to this 4th issue of Volume 31 of The Journal of Strategic Information SystemsWe are very pleased to introduce this, the 4th JSIS issue of 2022. Before we introduce the four excellent articles in this issue, we: (i) announce a recent success, and (ii) report several changes to the JSIS editorial team.We are pleased to announce the recipients of the Journal of Strategic Information Systems (JSIS) 2021 best paper award and the runners-up for this award. The best paper award recipients are Hope Koch, Wallace Chipidza and Timothy Kayworth for their paper, "Realizing value from shadow analytics: A case study." Tying for second place are Marco Marabelli, Sue Newell and Val Handunge for their paper, "The lifecycle of algorithmic decision-making systems: Organizational choices and ethical challenges", and Johann Kranz for his paper, "Strategic innovation in IT outsourcing: Exploring the differential and interaction effects of contractual and relational governance mechanisms". We heartily congratulate the JSIS 2021 best paper award winners and runners-up. Yolande will continue as sole Editor-in-Chief.We are sorry to see the departure of two members of our editorial team. Abstract: This paper examines how organizations create data-driven value propositions. Data-driven value propositions define what customer value is created based on data. We study the dynamics un­ derlying this process in a European postal-service organization. We develop a model that shows that the process of creating data-driven value propositions is emergent, consisting of iterative resourcing cycles. We find that creating data-driven value propositions involves the performance of two types of resourcing actions: data reconstructing and data repurposing. The process is shaped by two types of data qualities: apparent qualities, i.e., qualities perceived ex-ante as potentially significant for creating value propositions; and latent qualities, which raise unforeseen consequences en route. We discuss the implications of these findings for the literature on creating data-driven value propositions, for our understanding of data as a strategic resource, and for the literature on resourcing. Abstract: On e-commerce platforms, consumers rely heavily on online reviews, sales volume, and social media discussions to infer product quality. As a result, the past decade has witnessed an explosive growth of seller-initiated misrepresentation of quality through fake reviews, fake sales, and fake posts. We develop an analytical model to investigate sellers' competition in quality misrepresentation in agency pricing and the platform's policies. The platform can discourage sellers' quality misrepresentations by increasing the cost of misrepresentation or implementing a more lenient product return policy. We find that while a stricter anti-misrepresentation policy deters the misrepresentation of the high-quality seller, such a strategy may unintendedly incentivize the low-quality seller to misrepresent the quality more. Furthermore, increasing return leniency deters low-quality seller's misrepresentation in a wider range of market conditions than increasing the misrepresentation cost. We show sellers' online quality misrepresentation behaviors in a competitive setting, and our results have practical implications for platform policies. Collapse

Abstract: A B S T R A C TThe global spread and use of internet and mobile contributed to the development of digital payments and baking. There is a lack of research which provides comprehensive synthesis and analysis of factors affecting the use and adoption of digital banking and payment methods in GCC countries. Thus, the aim of this paper is to provide a comprehensive literature review and perform weight and meta-analysis. By reviewing 46 studies, it was found that best predictors for digital payment and banking adoption in GCC countries are trust, perceived security and perceived usefulness. Based on the extensive literature review, the conceptual of factors affecting adoption digital banking and payment methods in Gulf countries model was proposed, which will set agenda for future research. Abstract: With the ubiquity and prevalence of advanced technologies in society, transactions have become increasingly digital, requiring new user identity verification mechanisms. Electronic identification (eID) enables user identity authorization in online environments. Although eID plays a central role in government initiatives worldwide to digitalize citizen transactions, eID adoption remains surprisingly low. Drawing on digital nudging theory and e-government literature, we examine how eID adoption can be increased by changing the decision environment in which users choose eID. In a controlled experiment with 161 participants, we investigate the effect of default options (eID vs. offline ID as default) and popularity signals (presence vs. absence of social proof) on users’ eID adoption behavior. Both nudges increase eID adoption, but default options are a double-edged sword as they simultaneously fuel privacy concerns towards the government, attenuating the effect of default option on eID adoption. These concerns can be mitigated by adding social proof cues. Collapse

Abstract: This paper defines digital service in the context of technologically enhanced value co-creation between service system entities. Progress in digitalization and Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasing the relative share of technologically enhanced value co-creation between service system entities (e.g., people, companies, nations). Highly automated technical systems increasingly act as autonomous agents, on behalf of service providers, in value co-creation interactions with the system users. Sufficient conceptualization, abstractions and modeling paradigms for research and development of this type of value co-creation are absent from the literature and introduced in this paper. The main contribution of the paper is introduction and definition of digital service and digital service membrane as fundamental concepts in service science and service systems, with directions for future research on the topic. Designing suitable feedback mechanisms in a learning environment manifests through gamification elements. Nevertheless, previous research has shown that the effect of gamification is ambiguous and depends on several aspects. The setting in which the gamification is used can affect the learner’s perception of the feedback and, in turn, their motivation. Since learning systems are usually aimed at increasing the user’s learning performance but also their inherent enjoyment of learning, investigating effects on the user’s intrinsic motivation is essential. This study proposes a research model, and an experimental approach is outlined in order to examine how situational factors influence the effect of gamification on intrinsic motivation and learning performance in iVR learning environments. Abstract: T customization difficult even for technically accomplished users (Kallinikos, 2004), human activity is, by contrast, a non-deterministic, open system. As such, human helping may adapt readily to fill unforeseen system gaps, and heteromation may prove a good approach in ICT4D projects as well as in many organizational systems.In this paper, we examine heteromation's reliance on users for the helping necessary for system success to understand better the implications of this labor relation for system design and system users. Through an empirical study of heteromation in the case of the Brazilian correspondent banking system, an ICT4D project aimed at the financial inclusion of remote and underserved people, we adopt a critical approach to the issue of reliance on user helping as we examine the type of heteromated labor expended and the amount of effort that labor required. We pay attention to how users interpreted their helping and to the contextual factors that shaped it.Understanding heteromation as a labor relation and gaining insights for heteromated system design are important given the recent rise of heteromated systems. We see heteromation in knowledge repositories ). In and beyond ICT4D projects, heteromated systems have potential whenever information systems must serve large numbers of users in varied settings and with diverse needs, such that tailoring systems to meet user requirements may prove impossible (Heeks, 2003;Janssen, van der Voort, & van Veenstra, 2015). Heteromation may also prove useful when users are not skilled in technology use; in such cases, user training may prove too expensive to be viable and user alterations may be unlikely (Lee, 2001). As these examples suggest, being cognizant of the labor demands of helping in heteromated systems should prove useful across a wide range of modern work settings.In the balance of this paper, we briefly situate critical theory in the information systems literature to explain how and why we will use a critical approach to examine heteromation as a labor relation. We then describe Ekbia and Nardi's (2014, 2017) concept of heteromation, with a focus on the types of user labor they identified. Because these types remain undertheorized, particularly in terms of the amount of effort required and why users would willingly exert effort, we turn briefly to the literature on helping to gain insight into why users might provide significant uncompensated labor. We detail how we explored heteromation in the context of the Brazilian correspondent banking system, employing critical case analyses to tease out the contextual factors that shaped the type of heteromated labor and related effort as well as the broader discursive factors that shaped people's interpretations of their own helping. We conclude by theorizing the implications of our findings for heteromation as a labor relation, as a design strategy in ICT4D projects and beyond, and as a counterpoint to automation. Theoretical background Critical theory in information systems researchCritical theory in information systems research aids scholars in addressing socio-political questions in the hopes of bringing about improvement in actors' lives (Gregor, 2006). Scholars who introduced critical theory to the field adopted a Habermasian perspective that emphasized emancipation from alienating or distorting practices in technology and social relations to enhance freedom and justice (Lyytinen & Klein, 1985;Ngwenyama, 1991). For example, Lyytinen (1992) called for research to improve the human condition through (possibly, alternative) information systems. Later work drew upon Foucault, Giddens, and Bourdieu to complement attention to alienating or distorted practices with consideration of power relations, expanding the scope of critical theory to include theoretical traditions such as environmentalism, feminism, and Marxism (McGrath, 2005;Myers & Klein, 2011). With this expansion, Howcroft and Trauth (2005:3), drawing on Doolin (1998), argued that "critical research questions and deconstructs the taken-forgranted assumptions inherent in the status quo, and interprets organizational activity (including information systems) by recourse to wider social, political, historical, economic, and ideological context." Abstract: Digitalization is fundamentally changing the retailing ecosystem for shopping malls as digital and analogue elements get increasingly intertwined. We conceptualize shopping malls as two-sided markets whose primary function is connecting shoppers and retailers. By means of an interpretative case study, the article then presents an omnichannel strategy typology for how shopping malls can meet the evolving digitalization challenge. We identify three generic strategies labeled digital awaiter, digital data gatherer, and digital embracer. The paper provides implications for research in omnichannel strategies, digitalization, and two-sided markets by explicating different strategies that involve physical and digital resources, and different ecosystem agents, i.e., retailers and shoppers. It also provides insights for other organizations beyond retailing and which operate under a two-sided market regime. Collapse
