Abstract: The proposed layered and component based software architectural style enables data sharing and accessibility of computational software components across Biomedical Science problem domains. It also opens the door to translational informatics, which bridges the gap between knowledge, generated in biomedical science, and clinical practices. Software applications created from the proposed software architectural style, are able to support continuous drug repurposing. They exploit the semantic, which exists, and is available across biomedical problem domains, between drug chemical compounds, their biological targets, particularly unintentional targets and drug therapeutic effects. The excerpt from the proposed software architecture has already been deployed in a computationally light-weight software application, which manages drug repurposing through reasoning upon the available semantic. However a full scale implementation and full deployment of the software architecture, plus data sharing across the spectrum of biomedical research and disciplines, would require some changes in the way therapeutic drugs are discovered, tested and approved. Abstract: The vastly increasing number of online hotel room bookings is not only intensifying the competition in the travel industry as a whole, but also prompts travel intermediates (i.e. e-companies that aggregate information about different travel products from different travel suppliers) into a fierce competition for the best prices of travel products, i.e. hotel rooms. An important factor that affects revenues is the ability to conclude profitable deals with different travel suppliers. However, the profitability of a contract not only depends on the communication skills of a contract manager. It significantly depends on the objective information obtained about a specific travel supplier and his/her products. While the contract manager usually has a broad knowledge of the travel business in general, collecting and processing specific information about travel suppliers is usually a time and cost expensive task. Our goal is to develop a tool that assists the travel intermediate to acquire the missing strategic information about individual hotels in order to leverage profitable deals. We present a GIS-based decision support system that can both, estimate objective hotel room rates using essential hotel and locational characteristics and predict temporal room rate prices. Information about objective hotel room rates allows for an objective comparison and provides the basis for a realistic computation of the contract's profitability. The temporal prediction of room rates can be used for monitoring past hotel room rates and for adjusting the price of the future contract. This paper makes three major contributions. First, we present a GIS-based decision support system, the first of its kind, for hotel brokers. Second, the DSS can be applied to virtually any part of the world, which makes it a very attractive business tool in real-life situations. Third, it integrates a widely used data mining framework that provides access to dozens of ready to run algorithms to be used by a domain expert and it offers the possibility of adding new algorithms once they are developed. The system has been designed and evaluated in close cooperation with a company that develops travel technology solutions, in particular inventory management and pricing solutions for many well-known websites and travel agencies around the world. This company has also provided us with real, large datasets to evaluate the system. We demonstrate the functionality of the DSS using the hotel data in the area of Barcelona, Spain. Abstract: Software engineering efforts can potentially benefit much from a good understanding of the structures of existing software systems and the processes governing their development. Towards that end, we study software systems by means of the complex network analysis framework. We model a software package as a network, with nodes representing the functions in the package and edges representing the dependencies among the functions. Our empirical analysis of five widely-adopted open-source software packages reveals a set of interesting features of such networks, which cannot be adequately reproduced by existing complex network models. We then set out to develop a new network growth model, explicitly imitating generally-advocated software development principals, such as divide-and-conquer, modularization, high intra-module cohesion, and low inter-module coupling. Results of our analytical derivations and numeric studies show that our model can more closely reproduce the particular features exhibited by real-world software packages, thus hopefully better explaining the phenomena of concern. Abstract: In a globalized economic environment with volatile business requirements, continuous process improvement needs to be done regularly in various organizations. However, maintaining the consistency of workflow models under frequent changes is a significant challenge in the management of corporate information services. Unfortunately, few formal approaches are found in the literature for managing workflow changes systematically. In this paper, we propose an analytical framework for workflow change management through formal modeling of workflow constraints, leading to an approach called Constraint-centric Workflow Change Analytics (CWCA). A core component of CWCA is the formal definition and analysis of workflow change anomalies. We operationalize CWCA by developing a change anomaly detection algorithm and validate it in the context of procurement management. A prototype system based on an open-source rule engine is presented to provide a proof-of-concept implementation of CWCA. Collapse

Abstract: Dispersion in working teams has been addressed by extant research mostly in terms of the physical distance that separates team members. Recently, the focus has shifted toward an examination of a newer construct -temporal dispersion (TD). The study of TD so far has been constrained mostly to conceptual work. This study furthers the understanding of TD through an empirical investigation of its relationship with open source software (OSS) team performance. In this paper, hypotheses are developed based on coordination theory, and analyses are performed using data collected from multiple archival sources comprising 100 OSS development teams. Results indicate that TD positively affects development speed and quality and that software complexity moderates the relation between TD and software quality. Abstract: Stochastic programming brings together models of optimum resource allocation and models of randomness to create a robust decision-making framework. The models of randomness with their finite, discrete realisations are called scenario generators. In this paper, we investigate the role of such a tool within the context of a combined information and decision support system. We explain how two well-developed modelling paradigms, decision models and simulation models can be combined to create “business analytics” which is based on ex-ante decision and ex-post evaluation. We also examine how these models can be integrated with data marts of analytic organisational data and decision data. Recent developments in on-line analytical processing (OLAP) tools and multidimensional data viewing are taken into consideration. We finally introduce illustrative examples of optimisation, simulation models and results analysis to explain our multifaceted view of modelling. In this paper, our main objective is to explain to the information systems (IS) community how advanced models and their software realisations can be integrated with advanced IS and DSS tools. Abstract: We present eighteen examples of mission-critical spreadsheets used by diverse people and organizations for application software development, financial risk management, executive information systems, sales and marketing business processes, business operations, and complex analytics. We argue the spreadsheet is a Rapid Development Language, an Integrated Development Environment, and a Fourth Generation Language, and has unusual challenges regarding source code protection. We note that intentional spreadsheet applications are largely absent from the error literature. Abstract: In many rule-based systems, an inference engine is a software component which reasons over rules when the application is executed. The major task performed by the inference engine is conflict resolution, which determines the sequence of the consultation. We describe a theory and the resulting development environment for performing conflict resolution during development to eliminate the inference engine for systems using propositional logic. Using verification criteria and solution strategies, we derive four classes of rules and their rule ordering strategies, allowing conflict resolution to be performed during development. The resultant procedural implementations demonstrate dramatic performance improvements for some classes of rules, testing over 20,000 rules per s on a PC. Collapse

Abstract: Object oriented technologies are widely accepted in software development. A survey of universities run in 2005 found that most schools recognize the need to teach OO languages. However, they continue to teach structured analysis and design. In this article we argue that this approach is a fundamental conceptual mismatch. Further, we contend that a pure OO curriculum involving OO languages and OO analysis and design is advisable in our efforts to equip our students with the knowledge to be successful as software developers. Abstract: Object-oriented systems development (OOSD) is viewed by many as the best available solution to the ongoing "software crisis." However, some caution that OOSD is so complex that it may never become a mainstream methodology. To settle the controversy requires high-quality empirical evidence. This paper surveys the most rigorous research on OOSD available over the past decade. A review of these empirical studies indicates that the weight of the evidence tends to slightly favor OOSD, although most studies fail to build on a theoretical foundation, many suffer from inadequate experimental designs, and some draw highly questionable conclusions from the evidence. This set of conditions points to the need for additional, higher quality research to build a better case either for or against OOSD. Collapse
