Abstract: A company’s digitalisation journey spans multiple dimensions and processes. However, studies of digital maturity have focused only on certain parts of the process. This study presents a method capable of fully capturing a company’s level of digital maturity. A DP2 indicator of digital maturity was constructed. This in­ dicator is based on responses to a company survey of digitalisation in different business areas and processes. Companies with the highest degree of digitalisation are the oldest and largest (most employees). Differences between companies and sectors can be explained by the level of digitalisation in terms of digital management intensity, departmental agility and digital orientation. Collapse

Abstract: The challenges of managing large complex engineering projects, such as those involving the design of infrastructure, aerospace and industrial systems; are widely acknowledged. While there exists a mature set of project management tools and methods, many of today's projects overrun in terms of both time and cost. Existing literature attributes these overruns to factors such as: unforeseen dependencies, a lack of understanding, late changes, poor communication, limited resource availability (inc. personnel), incomplete data and aspects of culture and planning. Fundamental to overcoming these factors belies the challenge of how management information relating to them can be provided, and done so in a cost eff ;ective manner. Motivated by this challenge, recent research has demonstrated how management information can be automatically generated from the evolving digital footprint of an engineering project, which encompasses a broad range of data types and sources. In contrast to existing work that reports the generation, verification and application of methods for generating management information, this paper reviews all the reported methods to appraise the scope of management information that can be automatically generated from the digital footprint. In so doing, the paper presents a reference model for the generation of managerial information from the digital footprint, an appraisal of 27 methods, and a critical reflection of the scope and generalisability of data-driven project management methods. Key findings from the appraisal include the role of email in providing insights into potential issues, the role of computer models in automatically eliciting process and product dependencies, and the role of project documentation in assessing project norms. The critical reflection also raises issues such as privacy, highlights the enabling technologies, and presents opportunities for new Business Intelligence tools that are based on real-time monitoring and analysis of digital footprints. Abstract: E-commerce based companies rely on the effective use of the information systems used to support their processes. Accordingly, managers place a great emphasis on the success of projects to introduce such systems. However, research increasingly suggests that project success may not be as objective as one would assume or hope. Quite contrary, as our work will show, project success is often constructed by the stakeholders involved in the project. Extending prior research, we investigate how different groups of stakeholders construct their own perception of project success and how these different perceptions influence each other. Through our work, we provide management with insights into threats to a reliable project management approach for critical IS projects and identify a few major drivers that need to be accounted for to make sure that such critical projects really are successful. Abstract: Most of the cost of information system implementation projects is attributable to the post-adaptation phase. Thus, an effective use of the implemented system is necessary to justify the expense. It has been theorized that user adaptation can help to increase the level of effective use of a system. Changes to an enterprise system or to the individual’s tasks with an enterprise system are likely to trigger user adaptation. Yet the effect of user adaptation on effective use of an enterprise system is still widely unknown. We conducted a longitudinal case study to explore the phenomenon and develop a research model to measure the effect of user adaptation on the effective use of an enterprise system. The extension of the nomological network of the concept of effective use by an integration of the effect of user adaptation will be the main contribution of our research. Collapse

Abstract: Information Technology enabled Organizational Transformation (ITOT) has increasingly become a competitive necessity for contemporary organizations. Given its significant role, ITOT has persisted as a popular concept for researchers and practitioner of information systems. However, due to its complex nature, the ways to achieve it still requires further exploration. Hence, the present study aims to open this black box through examining a case study of Xi’an Aero-Engine PLC (XAEP), one of the major aircraft engine designers and manufacturers with more than 50 years of history in China. The findings of this case identify that appropriate types of embeddedness enable the organizations to gain the support and commitment and improve the capability that are necessary for an effective ITOT. It also emphasizes that type of embeddedness is contingent on the belief formation and action formation that arise from the internal and external IT department. Furthermore, this case shows the importance of leveraging IT in facilitating the successful implementation of ITOT. Collapse

Abstract: Workarounds as deviations from defined routines in business processes challenge standardization and thus the performance improvements expected from information systems. Literature associates workarounds predominantly with performance losses. Only few studies report on performance improvements from workarounds. However, what characterizes situations in which managers tolerate workarounds to yield potential performance improvements? This study examines situations in which managers are able to decide whether to tolerate or to prohibit workarounds. We report on a multiple case study in two organizations and use existing research on workarounds to structure our analysis. Building on this, we show that expected efficiency gains, exposure to compliance risk and perceived process weakness have an effect on the willingness of management to tolerate workarounds. We develop a model that illustrates important aspects of situations that influence this willingness and outlines the role of information systems in understanding workarounds. Collapse

Abstract: a b s t r a c tIt is important for manufacturing companies to provide a standard for product data exchange between diverse computer systems. Past attempts to develop neutral format standards for data exchange have had limited success, and have led to the development of STEP (Standard for the Exchange of Product) as a data exchange standard. The STEP standard makes it easier to integrate systems that process various product life-cycle functions, such as design, engineering, manufacturing, logistics support, and will help to facilitate concurrent engineering. The goal of this paper is to facilitate the computer-readable exchange of the product bill of materials (BOM) information for product data management (PDM). In this paper, the STEP ISO 10303-21 is implemented to share the product data information in a manufacturing environment. A structural product bill of materials is first transformed into an Excel file format, then a PDM Schema Exporter is utilized to export a BOM Excel file to a STEP Part 21 file. A C# program decodes the STEP file into BOM information to update the PDM databases in SQL server for product data management. Also, SAS code is written to generate the indented bill of materials from the BOM information, to draw a tree diagram to present an accurate structural view of a product, and to export to PDM databases for product data structural view. Abstract: As the development of information technologies (IT) influences consumer behavior, consumers now search for information and establish their purchase intention earlier in the process. Nonetheless, little research to date has examined how consumers make a decision to purchase a product early in the process, that is, at the prelaunch stage of the product. Delivering the right information at the right time would be important for consumers to evaluate and decide to purchase the products as well as for firms to increase preorder and subsequent sales. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the consumer decision making at the prelaunch stage of IT products, particularly in terms of product-related information and consumers’ decision timing. We propose that the interaction between product-related information and decision timing plays a salient role in affecting consumer decisions (i.e., consumer attraction and preorder purchase intention). Contributions of this paper include (1) a suggested framework extending the timeline of consumer decision making process which have traditionally concerned the decision timing at the initial post-launch stage or repurchase stage, and (2) an understanding of effective product information management for firms to manipulate potential consumers’ purchase decisions in earlier timing. Abstract: With the emergence of new technologies, companies can organize their electronic data exchanges by implementing hybrid interorganizational information systems (IOS). This paper presents a new analytical framework by considering IOS as the product of interconnections between the parts of IS developed by connected firms to support a given interorganizational process. We focus on updating internal databases through data synchronization between a set of suppliers and a set of clients. From the literature, we built types of sending and receiving systems based on three variables; namely, shared data, structural linkages, and message interdependency. Analytically, we derived possibilities of interconnections between these sending and receiving systems with asymmetric characteristics. In a field study, we empirically investigated IOS built to support product information flows from suppliers' to retailers' internal, databases by considering how suppliers built their sending systems, how retailers built their receiving systems, and how their interconnections led to different forms of IOS. Interconnections occurring between systems with asymmetric characteristics show the existence of several hybrid forms of IOS, both in design and use. We finally explain that, even if companies can benefit from their use, hybrid forms are less efficient than are extreme forms, those that are the result of interconnections between systems with symmetric characteristics. Abstract: Electronic exchanges of information between Businesses have continued to grow over recent decades. Though the emergence of new technologies, firms are facing new opportunities to build Interorganizational Information Systems (IOSs) to organize electronic data exchanges to update their own information systems. In this paper, we focus on flows from suppliers to retailers of product information, a set of data that describe the product manufactured by suppliers and retailed by wholesalers to the end consumer. We propose a new methodology to analyze IOSs, by considering how suppliers build their sending systems, how retailers build their receiving systems and how their interconnections lead to the creation of IOSs. Through a qualitative research based on interviews and documentation reviews, we describe and discuss the possibilities of interconnections between sending and receiving systems based on data privacy, structural linkages and message interdependencies.
