Abstract: Classification is an essential approach in business model research. Empirical classifications, termed taxonomies, are widespread in and beyond Information Systems (IS) and enjoy high popularity as both stand-alone artifacts and the foundation for further application. In this article, we focus on the study of empirical business model taxonomies for two reasons. Firstly, as these taxonomies serve as a tool to store empirical data about business models, we investigate their coverage of different industries and technologies. Secondly, as they are emerging artifacts in IS research, we aim to strengthen rigor in their design by illustrating essential design dimensions and characteristics. In doing this, we contribute to research and practice by synthesizing the diffusion of business model taxonomies that helps to draw on the available body of empirical knowledge and providing artifact-specific guidance for building taxonomies in the context of business models. Abstract: This study examines the team-level effects of pair programming by developing a research model that accounts for mediators and moderators of the relationship between pair programming and team performance. We hypothesize that pair programming helps software development teams establish backup behavior by strengthening the shared mental models among developers. In turn, backup behavior attenuates the negative effect of task novelty on team performance. We collect data from the software developers, Scrum masters, and product owners of 62 software development teams in a global enterprise software firm and find broad support for our research model. The study makes important contributions by shifting attention to the team-level effects of pair programming and by explicating mediating and moderating mechanisms related to the roles of shared mental models, backup behavior, and task novelty. The results underline the importance of viewing pair programming as a context-specific practice that helps establish backup behavior in teams. In terms of implications for practitioners, our results show that pair programming can be a valuable element of team governance to create shared mental models and backup behavior and to achieve high team performance when teams face high levels of task novelty. Abstract: Open source software (OSS) development has become an essential element of IT strategy: many firms seek OSS as a strategic means of unlocking the business value in external developer communities and internal knowledge sources. However, integrating external and internal sources of social capital is challenging and identifying appropriate integration strategies is crucial for the success of such endeavors. This study examines the simultaneous effects of external and internal sources of social capital, in the form of participant and project differences, and examines how they interact to influence OSS project success. We propose a taxonomy of participant differences (language, role, and contribution) and project differences (development environment and connectedness) and postulate their main and moderating effects on project success. Using a four-year panel data set of 329 SourceForge projects, we show that development environment difference has a curvilinear relationship with success and that connectedness reduces the positive impact of role and contribution diversity on project success. We also show that when development environment difference is moderate, the impact of role diversity is the most positive. We present the implications of these findings for theory and practice. Abstract: While performance appraisals provide an opportunity for managers to review employee performance, prior research points to potential negative consequences associated with performance appraisals. Specifically, prior IS research suggests that relative and criticism-based appraisals can have an undesirable impact on employee behaviour. Motivated by this, in this study we theorised and empirically investigated how relative and criticism-based appraisals can influence an IT project member’s tendency to continue working on a task despite encountering serious setbacks (i.e., task-level escalation). To shed light on the underlying mechanisms through which appraisals influence task-level escalation, we proposed and tested two mediating pathways based on goal orientation theory and prospect theory. In a laboratory experiment, we found that a relative appraisal led to greater task-level escalation as compared to an absolute appraisal. Proving goal orientation and avoiding goal orientation mediated this relationship. In addition, we found that a criticism-based appraisal led to greater task-level escalation as compared to a praise-based appraisal. Risk propensity and self-esteem mediated this relationship. Lastly, we found that the effects of both a relative appraisal and a criticism-based appraisal on task-level escalation were significantly different from a control group that did not involve any form of performance appraisal. Abstract: Open source software (OSS) development has recently garnered much attention from both industry practitioners and academic researchers. However, existing research on OSS usually focus on the role of behavioral factors in affecting collaboration outcomes but has neglected to critically consider the nature of software itself. In this study, we seek to integrate collaboration factors and software factors in OSS collaboration. Specifically, we investigate the role of programming style in open source collaboration, where strict guidelines for coding are usually not enforced. We develop three implications of programming style on contributor, development and diffusion from a diversity perspective. Additionally, two team level factors that moderate the negative effects of programming style are discussed. A comprehensive measure for quantifying programming style is proposed and verified in our preliminary investigation. Our study is expected to contribute to the literature on OSS development, software engineering and diversity in distributed work groups. Collapse

Abstract: Open source software projects share key resources including knowledge and developer attention. Developers who participate on multiple projects create ties among projects and facilitate access to those projects’ resources. However, projects also compete for developer attention, and they vary in their ability to integrate knowledge. This paper explores how factors that facilitate knowledge integration (low software coupling and high interactive discussion) impact project success and how developers’ attention to external projects may dampen a focal project’s success. Further, we explore how these factors may moderate the positive impact of a project’s network degree centrality to develop a more nuanced model of their influences on project success. Using data from 175 OSS projects we find that software coupling, interactive discussion and externally focused developer attention directly impact completed code commits. Interactive discussion also amplifies the benefit of high network degree centrality, while developers’ external attention weakens the positive impact of high network degree centrality. Results add to theory by providing a more nuanced view of how key strategic resources (knowledge and attention) drive OSS success. In particular it describes how knowledge integration ability, developer attention, and network degree centrality interact to influence project outcomes. Collapse

However, certain stability such as identity and norms maintains in spite of the dynamic nature of the communities. This paper seeks to resolve the tension between the fluidity and stability that co-present in open source community through a lens of organizational routine, and proposes a two-step approach to capture routines in the context of open source software development process. Abstract: Business Process Modeling has become a major task in the field of Business Process Management. There has been a trend within organizations towards adapting and reusing existing reference models for the modeling of individual business processes that belong to the same application domain to save time and costs. Due to the high availability of individual business process models together with the need for further reference models, the inductive development of reference models has gained tremendous importance. Meanwhile, different heuristic approaches have been proposed to the research community, based on median graph computation. By way of contrast, our approach tries to derive reference models based on factor analysis, which does not require an approximated matching between the individual business processes as an additional level of abstraction. Abstract: This article investigates software process diversity, defined as the project condition arising out of the simultaneous use of multiple software development process frameworks within a single project. Software process diversity is conceptualized as the response of a project team to such contingencies as requirements volatility, design and technological novelty, customer involvement, and the level of organizational process compliance enforced on the project. Moreover, we conceptualize that the degree of fit (or match) between a project's software process diversity and the level of process compliance enforced on the project impacts overall project performance. This conceptualization was empirically tested by utilizing data collected from 410 large commercial software projects of a multinational firm. The results show that higher levels of requirements volatility, design and technological novelty, and customer involvement increased software process diversity within a project. However, software process diversity decreased relative to increases in the level of process compliance enforced on the project. A higher degree of fit between the process diversity and process compliance of a project, rather than the effects of those variables independently, was found to be significantly associated with a higher level of project performance, as measured in terms of project productivity and software quality. These results indicate that increasing software process diversity in response to project-level contingencies improves project performance only when there is a concomitant increase in organizational process compliance efforts. The implications of these results for research are discussed and prescriptive guidelines derived to manage the fit between process diversity and process compliance for improving software project performance.
