On the Effectiveness of Smart Metering Technology Adoption: Evidence from the National Rollout in the United Kingdom

Abstract: In response to the burgeoning threats of climate change to humanity, numerous governments, such as those of the United States and most European countries, have launched rollout programs for the distribution of smart metering technology (SMT). Despite this notable recent investment, questions of whether and why SMT adoption facilitates the reduction of households’ energy demands remain relatively unexplored. Building on cognitive dissonance theory, we propose a research model for SMT adoption, residential energy-saving behaviors, and moderating factors. We then empirically test the model using a rich household dataset from the United Kingdom between 2012 and 2016. Our results show that SMT adoption is positively associated with energy-saving behaviors, while energysaving motivations substantially moderate this association—a lower level of concern about saving energy / a higher level of concern about climate change amplifies this effect. Importantly, we find that SMT usage positively moderates this relationship, but this marginal gain decreases in technology usage intensity. Our findings contribute to the information systems literature by showing a consequence of new technology adoption along with the role of cognitive dissonance in promoting intended objectives and identifying potential moderating effects. We discuss actionable insights for policymakers and utility firms. Collapse

Abstract: Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the enabling technologies of Industry 4.0. Although IoT has shown great promise for organizations, its practical use in generating value alone or in combination with existing IT capabilities remains unclear. Drawing upon the literature on dynamic capabilities and innovation capability, we propose IoT-enabled innovation capability (IoT-IC), consisting of three dimensions (IoT use for sensing, seizing, and reconfiguring) to explain competitive advantage. We examine three ordinary IT capabilities (flexible IT infrastructure, IT business experience, and relationship infrastructure) as the predictors of IoT-IC. We also test the moderating effect of competitive aggressiveness in influencing the relationship between IoT-IC and competitive advantage. Analysis of survey data from 175 U.S. companies provides empirical support for our research model. The results suggest that flexible IT infrastructure, IT business experience, and relationship infrastructure are positively associated with IoT-IC. Furthermore, the effect of IoT-IC on competitive advantage is positively moderated by competitive aggressiveness. The results point to the important role of existing IT capabilities in shaping IoT-IC and expand our understanding of the relationship between IoT-IC and competitive advantage at different levels of competitive aggressiveness. Abstract: The acquisition of personal information has been generally accepted in the pandemic situation as an effective measure to prevent infection, while at the same time raising concerns regarding the infringement of personal privacy. The current study aimed to propose and empirically test a research model for restaurant customers on the disclosure of personal information in a pandemic situation. Privacy calculus theory and institutional theory were applied to theoretically explain the drivers/inhibitors and behavioral responses that affect disclosure of personal information. We verified that the most influential factor on intention to disclose was “perceived benefit”, followed by “government pressure” as another strong predictor. We present theoretical and practical implications for restaurant managers and policy agencies. Collapse

Abstract: As recently several authors postulated the need to examine the credibility of online reviews (ORs) in an inter­ cultural context, we investigate this issue by building upon different theoretical frameworks and upon insights gained from an eye-tracking pre-study. Herein, the study is the first to explore ORs' credibility in an intercultural comparison. Moreover, no other study has shed light on the effect of OR's presentation format by incorporating cross-national perspectives yet. Applying a (2 × 2) between subjects experiment design, the results indicate that video reviews are able to only slightly increase arguments' quality effect on review credibility compared to textual reviews. However, differences occurred based on nationality, gender, and online shopping frequency. Furthermore, intercultural differences were detected between the effects of review consistency on review credibility, of review rating on review credibility, and of review credibility on purchase intention. Despite several positive outcomes and innovative opportunities, this playful evolution came with some questionable aspects as well affecting contemporary societies. One such instance is the gender gap in professional eSports, which describes the circumstance that the professional eSports scene is strongly male dominated, and females are substantially underrepresented. Despite some infrequent attempts, empirical research to better understand the gender gap in eSports is still scarce. Building on expectancy theory, we propose an empirical approach to comprehend achievement motivation as an intraindividual process consisting of different components (i.e., expectancy, instrumentality, first-and second-order valence) that in parts should differ based on gender. Abstract: The paramount importance for mobile retailers, expecting higher sales and cost savings is customer retention. Though previous studies have explored various nuances of customer behaviour towards mobile commerce applications, this study majorly aims to understand the drivers of repurchase intention and satisfying experience in an m-commerce shopping environment. The study follows the stimulus-organism-response (S-O-R) theoretical approach. A cross-sectional design was adopted for this study involving data from 420 regular mobile shoppers in India through a non-probabilistic sampling procedure. The collected data were later analysed using structural equation modeling. The results indicate perceived ubiquity and m-commerce app incentives as two strongest predictors of impulsiveness and perceived value respectively. It was further observed that impulsiveness negatively affects consumers repurchase intention but positively enhances the satisfying experience, whereas perceived value favourably affects both the variable. The study contributes in various ways; first, a holistic model using the S-O-R framework is a new addition in literature ground; second, the extra focus on the construct satisfying experience will give a larger understanding to optimise the m-commerce applications efficiently. Moreover, the study also presents managerial implications for practitioners working in areas related to mcommerce. Collapse

Abstract: Recently several studies have worked towards understanding player engagement in video games. Despite multiple approaches used, understanding of the topic remains incomplete due to its complexity and fast changing nature. Rooted in assumptions of the social identity approach, this study proposes identification with the player community as a predictor of engagement and prolonged retention in video games, while using the economically successful video games Fortnite and League of Legends as cases. To that end, we plan to conduct a multi-method study. First, we will test the relationship between engagement and community identification via quantitative data obtained from an online survey. Second, a structured workshop will be held with a focus group in order to derive a testable design theory holding the potential to increase players' identification with the game community. Preliminary results indicate that identification is a particularly meaningful predictor of community engagement confirming the underlying idea of our study. Collapse

Abstract: The economic environment of contemporary organizations is becoming increasingly dynamic. Organizational agility fosters sustainable competitive advantage under these turbulent conditions. Prior research demonstrated that strategic IT alignment could enhance organizational agility. Many organizations implemented an enterprise architecture management (EAM) function to achieve benefits such as strategic IT alignment and agility. However, there is little research that explains the pathways between these focal concepts. Hence, we ground our work in the dynamic capabilities view and develop a conceptual model to explain how EAM investments lead to agility mediated by strategic IT alignment. We conducted survey research and collected a sample of 110 respondents. Based on this dataset, we performed a PLS-SEM and cluster analysis to test our model and associated hypotheses. Our results indicate that EAM enhances organizational agility. Strategic IT alignment mediates this effect. Lastly, our results showcase the complementary effect of conducting a PLS-SEM and cluster analysis. Collapse
