Abstract: Organizations across all industries seek efficiency, digitization, and automation of their business processes in current times. Low-code development platforms (LCDPs) promise time and cost reduction through rapid and easy-to-use application assembly. Even so, many organizations struggle to understand and identify digital solutions that can advance their business processes. Therefore, we propose a conceptual framework for organizations to assess their business process management (BPM) initiative for LCDP suitability. The framework is developed through a study of literature, a focus group, and expert interviews, resulting in 18 factors to be assessed by organizations. An evaluation using fictitious use case analyses showed that the model was well-received, especially with regard to its completeness and operationality. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first work studying organizational adoption of low-code for the sake of BPM initiatives. Collapse

Abstract: Technology-based solutions have been developed to enhance competencies of maternity health workers (MHWs) in the developing countries, but there has been a limited exploration of such tools in the developed world. We developed a web-based application to support care coordination tasks of the prenatal care coordinators (PNCCs) in U.S. using a 3-phase methodology. During the first phase, following key functionalities were identified in collaboration with an expert panel: assessment, information prescription, collaborative calendar, and secure messaging. The second phase was about iterative and incremental development of the app with the expert panel using modular design and easy to use interfaces. This led to the development of a password-protected PHP web application based on a MySQL database. An outside panel consisting of sixteen PNCCs evaluated the tool and provided feedback on perceived benefits, risks and concerns. The evaluators thought that the app could be help them save resources, empower clients, identify risks, maintain continuity of care and simplify documentation. However, they expressed concerns about feasibility of the tool, implementation cost, compliance with guidelines, security issues related to storage of client data and complexity of managing a paperless system. Concerns of MHWs in the developed and developing countries have a significant overlap, hence there is an opportunity for the developed world to learn from research targeted for the developing world. To address some specific concerns of the MHWs in the developed world, we recommend further ethnographic work assuming an activity theoretic approach with the target users. Collapse

Abstract: The use of RFID middleware to support application development for and integration of RFID hardware into information systems has become quite common in RFID applications where reader devices remain stationary, which currently represents the largest part of all RFID applications in use. Another field for applying RFID technology which is offering a huge set of novel possibilities and applications are mobile applications, where readers are no longer fixed. In order to address the specific issues of mobile RFID-enabled applications and to support developers in rapid application development, we present ID-Services, an architecture for an RFID middleware that is designed to support mobile applications. The ID-Services approach has been used to implement MoVIS (Mobile Visitor Information System), a mobile application which allows museum visitors to request individually adapted multimedia information about exhibits in an intuitive way. Abstract: This paper describes an investigation into the utility of an agile development approach known as rapid application development (RAD) within a large-scale development project conducted within the public sector in the UK. Features of RAD as an ‘agile’ information systems development method (ISDM) are discussed and previous research identifying properties of development environments most conducive to its application are described. A case study is then presented based upon a long-term qualitative investigation of the ‘unbundling’ of a commercial RAD-like ISDM. The evidence from this case leads us to question established wisdom in relation to appropriate adoption and application of agile development within large-scale and complex development environments. Abstract: The aim of this research essay is to examine the structural nature of theory in Information Systems. Despite the importance of theory, questions relating to its form and structure are neglected in comparison with questions relating to epistemology. The essay addresses issues of causality, explanation, prediction, and generalization that underlie an understanding of theory. A taxonomy is proposed that classifies information systems theories with respect to the manner in which four central goals are addressed: analysis, explanation, prediction, and prescription. Five interrelated types of theory are distinguished: (I) theory for analyzing, (2) theory for explaining, (3) theory for predicting, (4) theory for explaining and predicting, and (5) theory for design and action. Examples illustrate the nature of each theory type. The applicability of the taxonomy is demonstrated by classifying a sample of journal articles. The paper contributes by showing that multiple views of theory exist and by exposing the assumptions underlying different viewpoints. In addition, it is suggested that the type of theory under development can influence the choice of an epistemological approach. Support is given for the legitimacy and value of each theory type. The building of integrated bodies of theory that encompass all theory types is advocated. Collapse

Abstract: Many alternative methods for designing secure information systems (SIS) have been proposed to ensure system security. However, within all the literature on SIS methods, there exists little theoretically grounded work that addresses the fundamental requirements and goals of SIS design. This paper first uses design theory to develop a SIS design theory framework that defines six requirements for SIS design methods, and second, shows how known SIS design methods fail to satisfy these requirements. Abstract: User beliefs and attitudes are key perceptions driving information technology usage. These perceptions, however, may change with time as users gain first-hand experience with IT usage, which, in turn, may change their subsequent IT usage behavior. This paper elaborates how users' beliefs and attitudes change during the course of their IT usage, defines emergent constructs driving such change, and proposes a temporal model of belief and attitude change by drawing on expectation-disconfirmation theory and the extant IT usage literature. Student data from two longitudinal studies in end-user computing (computer-based training system usage) and system development (rapid application development software usage) contexts provided empirical support for the hypothesized model, demonstrated its generalizability across technologies and usage contexts, and allowed us to probe context-specific differences. Content analysis of qualitative data validated some of our quantitative results. We report that emergent factors such as disconfirmation and satisfaction are critical to understanding changes in IT users' beliefs and attitudes and recommend that they be included in future process models of IT usage. Abstract: Colleges and universities in the United States with undergraduate programs offer undergraduate Management Information Systems programs in their business schools to complement and balance computer science and computer engineering curricula. Similar institutions in the Englishspeaking Caribbean, however, slant their computing studies overwhelmingly toward Computer Science , which produces technologists for the IT industry. Although the vast majority of their graduates are engaged in applying technology solutions to information problems in business organizations, these English-speaking Caribbean institutions offer limited MIS programs, which prepare graduates for such roles. This article examines undergraduate computing curricula in the Caribbean and compares them with others elsewhere in the world. It recommends that Englishspeaking Caribbean universities give similar prominence to MIS education in their business programs in order to equip graduates to create more effective IT-enabled business solutions. Abstract: This paper describes an investigation into the diffusion of information systems development methods (ISDMs). Such methods have a critical strategic impact on organizational performance in that they are the means for constructing, adapting and renewing the IS infrastructure in line with organizational strategy. We portray method diffusion as an instance of technological diffusion. Technological diffusion is normally portrayed within the IS industry as an overtly rational process. In this paper we postulate that the external diffusion process of ISDMs has many features in common with broader social movements. We maintain that the diffusion of ISDMs is a key example of knowledge-based diffusion and use the case of the Dynamic Systems Development Method (DSDM), a public domain standard method for Rapid Application Development (RAD), to refine a model of knowledge-based diffusion. Such a framework is important for understanding how such methods shape the community of practice in the IS development domain. Specifically how organizations adapt, deploy and use such knowledge. In further work we intend to verify aspects of this knowledge-based perspective in longitudinal and further case-study work. Collapse
