Abstract: Users of rival technology platforms, such as Android-versus-iOS, often harbor hostile opposition to each other. The dominant perspective of technology resistance, conceptualized as technology inertia, cannot explain such strong oppositional behavior. We propose a threat to tech self-esteem construct that captures distinct threat perceptions and offers a unified explanation for oppositional intentions. We conducted an empirical study of smartphone users, where we find that the threat to technology self-esteem arises from distinct antecedents and offers a singular explanation for opposition. Moreover, we show the unintended consequences of employing lockin strategies and provide advice on why and how to mitigate them. Collapse

Abstract: Manipulated reviews can mislead consumers to make inappropriate purchase decisions and reduce consumers’ dependency on online reviews, jeopardizing the platforms’ reputation. Existing studies mainly focus on the detection and the impact of manipulated reviews but are limited in examining the determinants of review legitimacy from the perspective of consumer perception. The current research introduces perceived review manipulation, defined as the extent to which an individual perceives a review as non-authentic with the goal of misleading others and influencing product sales. Using psychological reactance theory as a general framework, we investigate the impact of reviews with deviation from the average ratings on perceived review manipulation and review adoption. We future examine two boundary conditions of the above relationship—the moderating effects of review content concreteness and reviewer rating distribution. We adopt a multi-method approach to the empirical test of the research model. First, three online randomized experiments reveal that: (1) reviews with deviant ratings are more likely to be perceived as manipulated; (2) the relationship in (1) is enhanced when review content is abstract rather than concrete and when a reviewer is usually negative/positive (i.e., his/her rating distribution has positive/negative skewness) based on the deviation direction; and (3) perceived review manipulation negatively influences review adoption. Second, a field study was conducted to support the external validity of our research model. Our findings have academic and practical implications. Collapse

Abstract: Social media has the potential to both catalyze and attenuate a crisis by influencing offline responses. In addition, it is effective at profiling individuals, thus helping with response detections. Drawing on the elaboration likelihood model, we build a social media communication profile consisting of message quality and framing. We argue that message quality and framing shed light on offline responses. We anchor our reasoning on psychological reactance theory which posits that individuals' resistance is driven by freedom threats in such a way that individuals resist when they perceive that their freedom is threatened. Our empirical results support that message quality and framing may reveal the extent to which a community perceives its freedom to be threatened, manifested as the adoption of irresponsible behaviors in a crisis. Our findings have important implications for growing literature on social media profiling and crisis management. Collapse

Abstract: Social media (SM) platforms provide an ideal ground for mass audience targeting and information exchanges among individuals globally. That said, it is argued that government surveillance is prevailing worldwide and that 56% live in countries where political, social, or religious content was blocked online. Yet little is known on users' beliefs and perceptions towards government surveillance. In this respect, utilizing a sample of SM users, this research-in-progress specifically focuses on how users' perception of government surveillance attributes (credibility, transparency, and fairness) shapes user's beliefs towards government social media surveillance as well as how such perceptions can impact users' privacy attributes and the development for the need for surveillance. The research findings will contribute to the limited academic literature addressing government surveillance as well as expected to provide policymakers and privacy practitioners with insights on SM users beliefs in such context. Abstract: Social media platforms have evolved as major outlets for many entities to distribute and consume information. The content on social media sites, however, are often considered inaccurate, misleading, or even harmful. To deal with such challenges, the platforms have developed rules and guidelines to moderate and regulate the content on their sites. In this study, we explore user banning as a moderation strategy that restricts, suspends, or bans a user who the platform deems as violating community rules from further participation on the platform for a predetermined period of time. We examine the impact of such moderation strategy using data from a major Q&A platform. Our analyses indicate that user banning increases a user’s contribution after the platform lifts the ban. The magnitude of the impact, however, depends on the user’s engagement level with the platform. We find that the increase in contributions is smaller for a more engaged user. Additionally, we find that the quality of the user-generated content (UGC) decreases after the user ban is lifted. Our research is among the first to empirically evaluate the effectiveness of platform moderations. The findings have important implications for platform owners in managing the content on their sites. Abstract: Data breaches lead to inherent uncertainty among customers due to the compromise of information and its potential consequences for customers, e.g., identity theft or credit card misuse. Previous research has focused on outcome-based strategies to address these negative impacts. However, informed by reactance theory, we argue that customers feel a loss of control due to the induced uncertainty and that companies need to tackle these impacts. We test our hypotheses in two empirical studies. The results of Study 1 suggest that data breaches indeed lead to an increased perception of uncertainty among customers. Study 2 examines to what extent the establishment of control can mitigate the negative uncertainty effects. We highlight that by providing customers with control, companies can reduce the degree of uncertainty and increase satisfaction with the response. By conceptualizing choice as a catalyst for perceived control, we offer practitioners a novel strategy for responding to data breaches. Collapse

Abstract: To provide insight into women’s approaches to managing the work-family interface, I introduce the concepts of focal and peripheral role senders and illuminate the importance of their interplay in the enactment of women’s domestic roles. At the core of my theoretical model is the process by which focal and peripheral role senders embrace or reject an ideal enactment of domestic roles and the women’s strategies women use to either acquiesce to ideal roles or acquire idiosyncratic roles. This paper examines the husband as the focal role sender, consistent with the literature’s focus and the pervasiveness of husbands in my data, and considers peripheral role senders, such as parents and in-laws, who also influence women’s role enactment, either by amplifying or muting the husband’s preferred role enactment. This research contributes to existing theory by introducing the importance of focal and peripheral role senders, illuminating how these multiple senders and their interaction influence women’s strategies to deal with role conflict, and documenting how women’s strategies subsequently influence their career trajectories. Abstract: Technology-mediated dangerous behaviors (TMDBs), such as posting selfies while driving or posting private information, are prevalent and potentially require interventions. Knowledge about the drivers of these, and specifically the role of information in stimulating such behaviors, is limited. To address this gap, this paper turns to foraging and risk-sensitivity theories. These theories suggest that animals engage in more dangerous behaviors when their perceived need for calories is high. Similarly, humans increase financial risk-taking when they perceive dissatisfaction with what they have. Importantly, inequality information can increase such perceptions and change people's risk-taking propensity. Adapting these ideas, the paper postulates that TMDBs resemble food-seeking in animals in that they are goal oriented, can be dangerous, and yield unknown (probabilistic) rewards. Therefore, TMDBs are explained using foraging and risk-sensitivity theory angles. Focusing on social media users (Studies 1-4; four experiments; total n = 2,504), I argue that (1) it is reasonable to view users as foraging the "fields of social media" for social-hedonic rewards, (2) it is possible to alter their risk appetite and TMDBs through inequality information and upward comparison mechanisms, (3) this process can be mediated not only through cognitions, but also emotions, and (4) perceived scarcity of rewards and social comparison orientation affect this process. With Study 5, the paper extends the core aspects of this theoretical perspective to the U.S. state level and argues that objective financial inequality can explain differences between states in terms of TMDBs such as texting while driving and relative interest in TMDBs such as prank videos. The findings largely support these assertions. They illuminate the role of information, notably inequality, in driving TMDBs, extend prior research focused on basic needs (e.g., physiological needs in the case of food intake decisions) to an evaluation of higher-order human needs (e.g., needs for belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization) catered to by nonphysiological, social-hedonic rewards, and point to important mechanisms that translate inequality into TMDBs.Ofir Turel is a professor of information systems management within the School of Computing and Information Systems at The University of Melbourne. and a Scholar in Residence in the Decision Neuroscience Program, Department of Psychology, University of Southern California. Abstract: Previous studies provide mixed conclusions on the prioritization of response resources allocation. This paper examines the relative importance of three targeting strategies—full response, random response, and responding to extreme online reviews. It also explores the two levels of response tailoring (high vs. low) on consumers’ purchase likelihood by taking review valance into account. For those firms with sufficient budget, results from three laboratory experiments indicate the following; responding to every negative online review using hightailored responses, and selectively responding to positive online reviews, using low-tailored responses is an optimal configuration. Whereas, for firms with limited budget, responding to extreme negative online reviews using high-tailored responses is the optimal configuration. Collapse
