Abstract: Prompted by perceived shortcomings of prevailing conceptualizations of digital technology in IS, we propose a theory aimed at capturing both the ontological complexity of digital objects qua objects, and how their identity and use is bound up with various social associations. We begin with what it is to be an object, the differences between material and nonmaterial objects, and various categories of nonmaterial objects including syntactic objects and bitstrings. Building on these categories we develop a conception of digital objects and a novel "bearer" theory of how material and nonmaterial objects combine. The role of computation is considered, and how the identity and system functions of digital objects flow from their social positioning in the communities in which they arise. Various implications of the theory are identified, focusing on its use as a conceptual frame through which to view digital phenomena, and its potential to inform existing perspectives with regard both to how digital technology per se and the relationship between people and digital technology should be theorized. These implications are illustrated with reference to secondary markets for software, the treatment of digital resources in the resource-based, knowledge-based, and service-dominant logic views of organizing, and recent work on sociomateriality. Abstract: The Business & Information Systems Engineering (BISE) community in the Germanspeaking countries has a long track record of publishing papers using design science research (DSR). However, the state of recent DSR within the BISE community is not well documented and the lessons learned can be useful for other communities. This paper investigates the use of DSR methodology by examining articles published in the BISE community’s primary outlets. We focus on understanding the artifacts created, the foundations for building these artifacts, and the evaluation methods used. The results reveal a) a broad view of foundations for DSR by incorporating artifacts that are used in practice, b) the focus on the organization as the unit of analysis, c) a pluralism of research methods that cater to the timeliness of problems addressed, and d) low level of theoretical underpinnings, thus lacking in DSR rigor aspects. Abstract: Contemporary business organizations are increasingly turning their attention to jointly creating value with a variety of stakeholders, such as individual customers and other business organizations. However, a review of the literature reveals that very few studies have systematically examined value cocreation within business-to business(B2B) contexts. Using a revelatory case study of the relationship between an ERP vendor with a global reputation and its partners, and informed by the resource-based view of the firm and related theoretical perspectives, we develop an understanding of value cocreation in B2B alliances associated with selling, extending, and implementing packaged software, specifically ERP systems. Our study reveals that there are different mechanisms underlying value cocreation within B2B alliances, and also points to several categories of contingency factors that influence these mechanisms. In addition to providing insights about the phenomenon of cocreation itself, the study contributes to the stream of packaged software literature, where the implications of value cocreation in alliances between packaged software vendors and their partners for the client organizations have not been sufficiently explored. Abstract: The open and fragmented nature of IS research has spawned a vibrant debate about sustainability of the IS discipline. Intellectually stimulating and rooted in a rich repertoire of approaches, the debate is frequently polarized along a dialectical spectrum, where advocates take positions on appropriate boundaries and audiences for the discipline. With the objective of reframing this debate, and the hope of moving it forward, this paper develops a resource-based metaphorical model for IS research. We establish that disciplines can be viewed as analogous to contemporary firms, and thus, resource-based concepts for the sustainability of contemporary firms can be extended to examining the sustainability of knowledge firms. Our central proposition is that differences in "knowledge product" heterogeneity, when positioned appropriately with the market demand, can affect the sustainability of the IS firm. In resolving the issue of boundary conditions, our analysis suggests that the likelihood of IS outperforming other competing disciplines is feasible regardless of whether a distinct identity is forged. This relation is contingent on the ability of a knowledge firm to secure resources. Distinctness is required however, when a knowledge firm is unable to generate resources. Our analysis also indicates that the debate on audiences maybe misplaced. Beyond addressing the debate, however, we conclude that an inductive approach to research with a focus on addressing problems faced by emical markets is more likely to ensure sustainability when contrasted with other perspectives. Abstract: We view the current belief in reference discipline theories and their value in MIS research as exhibiting dominance in our field. This article is based on the panel discussion at the 2008 International Conference on Information Systems (ICIS) held in Paris, France. It examines why this dominance has the potential to harm the future prospects of our intellectual endeavors. In counterpoint, we present the argument that the use of reference disciplines should continue. Aside from the fact that the belief in the value of reference discipline is continued, there are benefits derived from anchoring research initiatives in reference discipline theories which should be acknowledged. Under certain situations such use should be encouraged and broadened. Additionally, we will present arguments for viable alternatives to relying on reference disciplines in theory building. The alternatives are aimed at building and expanding indigenous IS theory. Collapse

Abstract: Organizations strive to enhance performance in an amplified ambiguous environment, by assessing internal working units’ efficiency and redesigning organizational structure to achieve this goal. Business Intelligence (BI) is an IT resource that impact both process and overall organization performance. Identifying how BI affects performance has major implications for both organizations that implemented BI and those taking initiatives toward acquiring one. Despite significant efforts and industry investments, this topic received little attention in IS academic research. The goal of this study is to contribute to general body of knowledge in the field, by building on previous literature and theories from both IS and reference disciplines. The paper develops a framework for assessing the impact of business intelligence capabilities on organization performance, uncertainty, and information processing. According to our review, this is the first study to draw upon Organizational Information Processing (OIPT) and resource-based view of the firm (RBV) theories to investigate a direct association between BI and firm performance. The contribution of the study is setting a roadmap for further research that builds on existing frameworks and developed instruments. Collapse
