Abstract: Social referral reward programs (SRRPs) aim to incentivize existing customers to recommend a product or service to others. Based on the reward threshold, we classify social referrals into two categories: singletasking social referral (SSR) and multi-tasking social referral (MSR). Considering that MSR involves multiple responders, we explore how to design an effective reward mechanism in this new context. Our primary interests in outcomes include users' willingness to recommend and their continuous referral intentions. Drawing from fairness theory and loss aversion theory, we propose three reward models based on the keeping percentage of rewards obtained, i.e., keep-it-all (KIA), discounted keep-it-all (DKIA), and all-or-nothing (AON). We designed an experiment to test the hypotheses regarding the effects of reward types on referral intention and continuous intention. This study will provide important implications for research and practice in designing an effective reward mechanism in MSR. Collapse

Abstract: Digital labor platforms (and many other digital workplaces) can be anonymous, isolated, and lacking social interaction. In this context, implementing conversational agents (CAs) to provide social presence and relatedness could be a remedy. However, based on research in the context of human-to-human interaction, two counteracting effects of CAs' social presence can be derived. First, social presence and social relatedness induce enjoyment. Second, social presence can lead to a perception of task pressure, which reduces enjoyment. We conducted a three-condition online experiment with 269 participants from a commercial digital labor platform to investigate these effects. Our results show that social presence directly leads to social relatedness and enjoyment, and indirectly to task pressure. However, this perceived task pressure does not reduce enjoyment and only positively effects performance. Thus, it appears that introducing CAs as part of digital labor platforms is a win-win situation for users and work. Collapse

Abstract: This study investigates how one personality trait of CIOs and CEOs, i.e., their empathy, affects CIO–CEO re­ lationships and then the outcomes of firms’ ongoing digital transformation. We hypothesize that the cognitive and emotional empathy of CIOs and CEOs can establish mutual understanding and trust, which in turn improve digital transformation. We empirically validate these hypotheses based on a survey of 105 pairs of matched CIOs and CEOs. The findings reveal asymmetric effects: CIOs’ empathy improves CIO–CEO relationships and then digital transformation, but CEOs’ empathy does not show significant effects. We then discuss our findings and implications to theory and practice. Collapse

Abstract: Software is critical to nearly every organization’s performance and can create value for all organizational functions. Given that software development firms that create solutions for client organizations are by necessity constantly seeking competitive advantage, the central objective of this research was to investigate the impact of capability building on software development firm competitiveness. Developing software is a knowledge-intensive and often complex process that requires internal exchanges among knowledgeable and capable employees within the firm. Accordingly, for software development firms, capability building is critical for competitive advantage. This research draws from capability, intellectual capital, and relational capital research streams and develops an intra-firm relational capital to intellectual capital model of capability building for software development. Ana­ lyses of data from key informants of 200 software development firms provide strong support for our model. We discuss the implications of our research for the competitiveness of software development firms for capability, intellectual capital, and relational capital theories and for firm practices. Abstract: Organisations implement a variety of knowledge mechanisms such as information security education, training and awareness (SETA) programs and information security policies, to influence employees' secure behaviour. Despite increased efforts to provide information systems (IS) security knowledge to employees, data breaches and other security incidents resulting from insider behaviour continue. Recent IS security research, primarily grounded on assumptions of employees' rational assessment of numerous factors, has yielded inconsistent results. Challenging this paradigm, we model secure behaviour on security knowledge mechanisms, which focuses on the multidimensional nature of security knowledge breadth, depth and finesse to represent the full array of managerial levers. We further draw on construal level theory to conceptualise users' perceptual judgements of security messages. Two studies support our model, with the second building on the first. Study 1, an experiment with 312 participants, focused on validating the treatments. Study 2, a survey with 219 participants, validated the entire model. Results showed that our model has significantly more explanatory and predictive power than the orthodox paradigm. Our results have practical implications for optimising the organisation of knowledge mechanisms by emphasising the personal relevance of threats and defining the factors that lead to secure behaviour. We also contribute to the discourse on information security research and provide a template for integrating theories, thus opening new avenues for future research. Collapse

Abstract: Open Government efforts are criticized for providing limited value. Instead of looking at a value, we investigate the usefulness of web-based open government portals and apps. Specifically, we investigated the relationship between digital transparency and usefulness. We analyzed perceived digital transparency and usefulness in a survey of 112 respondents using Partial Least Square (PLS) and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM). The results show that perceived functionality, transparency, and efficiency influence usefulness but that functionality of apps and efficiency are more important than transparency. Usefulness can be created without having high levels of transparency, as the public wants answers to their questions. Apps should be designed for efficient use, as users have limited time and resources. Apps having pre-defined functional views can be useful to provide quick insight but might limit transparency by not offering other views and insights. Opening raw data using portals can provide higher levels of transparency, although more time and effort are needed to analyze. Both portals providing access to raw data and apps having pre-defined views are needed for open government and trans­ parency as they serve other stakeholder groups and purposes. Collapse

Job or personal demands no longer rely on either work- or nonwork-related domain resources. Abstract: Customer contribution is the most important in the company's profit. However, due to difficulties in data collection, little research has investigated the antecedents and measurement of customer contribution. This study mainly explores the effect of overall service quality and cloud trust on consumer contribution to enhancing online customers' actual purchasing behaviors. Through literature review and expert interview, we identify five factors of overall service quality: website design, fulfillment, customer service, security/privacy, and third-party payment. The research model treats cloud trust as a second-order reflective construct driven by perceived warranty, perceived competence, consumer confidence, source credibility, and diagnosticity. The hypotheses proposed by the study help develop the best customer value management strategy in the electronic commerce industry. Abstract: Manipulated reviews can mislead consumers to make inappropriate purchase decisions and reduce consumers’ dependency on online reviews, jeopardizing the platforms’ reputation. Existing studies mainly focus on the detection and the impact of manipulated reviews but are limited in examining the determinants of review legitimacy from the perspective of consumer perception. The current research introduces perceived review manipulation, defined as the extent to which an individual perceives a review as non-authentic with the goal of misleading others and influencing product sales. Using psychological reactance theory as a general framework, we investigate the impact of reviews with deviation from the average ratings on perceived review manipulation and review adoption. We future examine two boundary conditions of the above relationship—the moderating effects of review content concreteness and reviewer rating distribution. We adopt a multi-method approach to the empirical test of the research model. First, three online randomized experiments reveal that: (1) reviews with deviant ratings are more likely to be perceived as manipulated; (2) the relationship in (1) is enhanced when review content is abstract rather than concrete and when a reviewer is usually negative/positive (i.e., his/her rating distribution has positive/negative skewness) based on the deviation direction; and (3) perceived review manipulation negatively influences review adoption. Second, a field study was conducted to support the external validity of our research model. Our findings have academic and practical implications. Collapse
