Abstract: The rapid development of e-commerce has led to a swiftly increasing number of competing providers in electronic markets, which maintain their own, individual data describing the offered items. Recommender systems are popular and powerful tools relying on this data to guide users to their individually best item choice. Literature suggests that data quality of item content data has substantial influence on recommendation quality. Thereby, the dimension completeness is expected to be particularly important. Herein resides a considerable chance to improve recommendation quality by increasing completeness via extending an item content data set with an additional data set of the same domain. This paper therefore proposes a procedure for such a systematic data extension and analyzes effects of the procedure regarding items, content and users based on real-world data sets from four leading web portals. The evaluation results suggest that the proposed procedure is indeed effective in enabling improved recommendation quality. Collapse

Abstract: Missing input values weaken the ability of information systems (IS) researchers to make calculations, thereby reducing effective sample sizes and statistical power. Such technical problems with data cascade into scientific limitations resulting in the neglect of social and economic issues. Therefore, extensive missing values in data forces researchers to make crucial decisions, such as whether to impute and if so, what strategy to use. This study presents a single imputation approach that integrates and extends best practices for mitigating the effects of missing values. Using an array of missing value situations, we illustrate the Regression Imputation Optimizing Sample Size and Emulation (RIOSSE) method. The approach involves the derivation of an imputation model for each low-sample variable that leverages information available in large-sample sized inputs within the same data source. RIOSSE derives imputation equations with two competing goals in mind: 1) statistical power and 2) emulation. Direct comparisons demonstrate that RIOSSE is superior to three prominent multiple imputation methods (K-Nearest Neighbor, missForest, and LASSO) in two criteria each for achieving statistical power (parsimoniousness and sample size) and emulation (predictiveness and content validity). Further, 5-fold cross validation validated the head-to-head goal criteria comparisons. The paper contributes 1) a description of the RIOSSE method, 2) new imputation performance metrics and visualizations, 3) comparisons of our proposed method to three prominent multiple imputation methods, and 4) specified imputation models for 30 commonly used inputs to firm performance calculations. Abstract: Passwords are the most widely used method of authentication on the Internet, but users find compliance with password guidelines difficult, and we know little about the long-term effects of attempts to improve compliance. In this paper, we extend the work of fear appeals use in the IS security domain to investigate their longer-term effects. We conducted a longitudinal experimental study to examine fear appeals’ long- and short-term effects. Using a model based on protection motivation theory (Rogers, 1983), we found that fear of threat, perceived password effectiveness, and password self-efficacy predicted compliance. We also found that neither perceived vulnerability to a security attack nor perceived severity of an attack influenced compliance. Providing persuasive communication improved compliance with password guidelines and resulted in significantly stronger passwords, but the effects on compliance intentions were only short term. This study extends our understanding of the factors that influence compliance with password guidelines and how we can modify them to improve compliance. We raise interesting questions about the role of fear in different IS security contexts. We also highlight the need for more research on the long-term impact of persuasive communication. Collapse

Relatively little research has focused on what specific system design characteristics motivate individuals toward IS acceptance. Abstract: How does information technology (IT) enable firms to globalize their operations and achieve higher foreign profits? We use archival data for multinational firms publicly traded in the United States for the years 1999–2006, and find indirect evidence for the role of IT to help firms achieve higher foreign profits through revenue growth rather than cost reduction. Our findings suggest that foreign responsiveness plays a more important role in generating foreign profits than does value chain structure. Our exploratory analyses for the effect of IT on domestic revenues and profits suggest some evidence for equalization of returns across foreign and domestic operations. Among additional results, we find that research and development is positively associated with foreign revenues and foreign profits with an effect greater than that of IT, and advertising is positively associated with foreign revenues with an effect greater than that of IT. By documenting how IT creates value for firms through globalization, we extend the business value of IT and international business literatures that have so far touched on firm-level globalization benefits from IT only in passing. The findings can help managers decide how to allocate discretionary expenditures to achieve strategic objectives such as foreign and domestic revenues and profits, and the role of revenue versus cost mechanisms. Abstract: a b s t r a c tMissing data is a common occurrence in survey-based research studies. However, the issue of missing data in Management Information Systems (MIS) literature has been overlooked, unlike the case in other disciplines such as Psychology, Marketing, Statistics, and Operations Management. The aim of this paper is to narrow this gap in the MIS field by investigating how MIS researchers address issues of missing data. This paper briefly outlines the causes of missing data in survey-based research as well as the common remedial techniques available to researchers. The paper also reviews how the common statistical software programs namely PASW (SPSS), SAS, LISREL, AMOS, EQS, and PLS handle missing data. It summarizes the common missing data remedial techniques and procedures and outlines how the presence of missing data affect sample size, statistical power, parameter estimates, ability to cope with different missing data patterns, and ease of implementation. Following that is a review of 749 survey-based research articles published between 1990 and 2010 in nine mainstream MIS Journals. The results reveal that researchers rarely report, explicitly, the presence or treatment of missing data and that when they dothey tend to use the least accurate techniques of listwise and pairwise deletion. The research concludes with recommendations that include a call for editorial policies that encourage the reporting of missing data, the reporting of the chosen missing data treatment techniques as well as the justifications for the techniques adopted by the researchers. The authors assert, based on the research, that following these recommendations will affect the rigor and quality of MIS survey-based research. Collapse

Abstract: We develop and test a theoretical model to investigate the assimilation of enterprise systems in the post-implementation stage within organizations. Specifically, this model explains how top management mediates the impact of external institutional pressures on the degree of usage of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. The hypotheses were tested using survey data from companies that have already implemented ERP systems. Results from partial least squares analyses suggest that mimetic pressures positively affect top management beliefs, which then positively affects top management participation in the ERP assimilation process. In turn, top management participation is confirmed to positively affect the degree of ERP usage. Results also suggest that coercive pressures positively affect top management participation without the mediation of top management beliefs. Surprisingly, we do not find support for our hypothesis that top management participation mediates the effect of normative pressures on ERP usage, but instead we find that normative pressures directly affect ERP usage. Our findings highlight the important role of top management in mediating the effect of institutional pressures on IT assimilation. We confirm that institutional pressures, which are known to be important for IT adoption and implementation, also contribute to postimplementation assimilation when the integration processes are prolonged and outcomes are dynamic and uncertain.
