Abstract: Data science has been described as the fourth paradigm of scientific discovery. The latest wave of data science research, pertaining to machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), is growing exponentially and garnering millions of annual citations. However, this growth has been accompanied by a diminishing emphasis on social good challenges-our analysis reveals that the proportion of data science research focusing on social good is less than it has ever been. At the same time, the proliferation of machine learning and generative AI has sparked debates about the sociotechnical prospects and challenges associated with data science for human flourishing, organizations, and society. Against this backdrop, we present a framework for "data science for social good" (DSSG) research that considers the interplay between relevant data science research genres, social good challenges, and different levels of sociotechnical abstraction. We perform an analysis of the literature to empirically demonstrate the paucity of work on DSSG in information systems (and other related disciplines) and highlight current impediments. We then use our proposed framework to introduce the articles appearing in the JAIS special issue on data science for social good. We hope that this editorial and the special issue will spur future DSSG research and help reverse the alarming trend across data science research over the past 30-plus years in which social good challenges are attracting proportionately less attention with each passing day. Abstract: Accountability is crucial to make stakeholders of Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based systems justify their actions, thereby explaining the harm such systems cause to AI users. Due to the importance of accountability in the context of AI, accountability was introduced into IS research through literature reviews. Therefore, while IS research's understanding of accountability covers the necessary depth, it comes at the expense of its essential breadth. Using a bibliometric analysis with 19,978 English-language papers, we shed light on the essential breadth posing three W-and one H-questions (When, What, Whereof, and How). Therefore, we contribute to IS research by highlighting the urgent need to revise existing definitions of accountability in the context of AI and establish them in IS research. We argue that a missing revision leads to non-transferrable findings within IS research. Accordingly, this study serves as a starting point for adapting definitions and creating a shared understanding in IS research. Collapse

Abstract: Infrastructure-as-code enables cloud architects to automate IT service delivery by specifying IT services through machine-readable definition files. To allow for a reusability of the infrastructure-as-code specifications, cloud architects specify IT services as compositions of sub-processes. As the AI planning agents for automated IT service composition proposed by prior research fall short in the infrastructure-as-code context, we design a search-based problem-solving agent named YUMA according to a design science research process to fill this research gap. YUMA holds a search tree reflecting the state space and transition model. It includes an algorithm for building the search tree and two algorithms for determining the minimum composition plan. The underlying IT service composition problem is explicated for the infrastructure-as-code context and formulated as a search problem. The results of the demonstration and evaluation show that YUMA fulfills the requirements necessary to solve this problem and digitizes an important task of cloud architects. Collapse

Abstract: Substance use disorder (SUD) exacts a substantial economic and social cost in the United States, and it is crucial for SUD treatment providers to match patients with feasible, effective, and affordable treatment plans. The availability of large SUD patient datasets allows for machine learning techniques to predict patient-level SUD outcomes, yet there has been almost no research on whether machine learning can be used to optimize or personalize which treatment plans SUD patients receive. We use contextual bandits (a reinforcement learning technique) to optimally map patients to SUD treatment plans, based on dozens of patient-level and geographic covariates. We also use near-optimal policies to incorporate treatments’ time-intensiveness and cost into our recommendations, to aid treatment providers and policymakers in allocating treatment resources. Our personalized treatment recommendation policies are estimated to yield higher remission rates than observed in our original dataset, and they suggest clinical insights to inform future research on data-driven SUD treatment matching. Abstract: Learning from experience is a central mechanism underlying organizational capabilities. However, in examining how organizations learn from past experiences, much of the literature has focused on situations in which actors are facing a repeated event. We direct attention to a relatively underexamined question: when an organization experiences a largely idiosyncratic series of events, at what level of granularity should these events, and the associated actions and outcomes, be encoded? How does generalizing from experience impact the wisdom of future choices and what are the boundary conditions or factors that might mitigate the degree of desired generalization? To address these questions, we develop a computational model that incorporates how characteristics of opportunities (e.g., acquisition candidates, new investments, product development) might be encoded so that experiential learning is possible even when the organization’s experience is a series of unique events. Abstract: ☆ This editorial opinion paper provides a subjective viewpoint on the potential impact of generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT in the domains of education, business, and society. Its objective is to offer initial guidance on the opportunities, challenges, and implications associated with these technologies. It is worth noting that, given its nature as an editorial opinion piece, this submission has not undergone a formal double-blind review process but has been reviewed informally by appropriate experts.Transformative artificially intelligent tools, such as ChatGPT, designed to generate sophisticated text indistinguishable from that produced by a human, are applicable across a wide range of contexts. The technology presents opportunities as well as, often ethical and legal, challenges, and has the potential for both positive and negative impacts for organisations, society, and individuals. Offering multi-disciplinary insight into some of these, this article brings together 43 contributions from experts in fields such as computer science, marketing, information systems, education, policy, hospitality and tourism, management, publishing, and nursing. The contributors acknowledge ChatGPT's capabilities to enhance productivity and suggest that it is likely to offer 1 Equal contributions Y.K. Nevertheless, they also consider its limitations, disruptions to practices, threats to privacy and security, and consequences of biases, misuse, and misinformation. However, opinion is split on whether ChatGPT's use should be restricted or legislated. Drawing on these contributions, the article identifies questions requiring further research across three thematic areas: knowledge, transparency, and ethics; digital transformation of organisations and societies; and teaching, learning, and scholarly research. The avenues for further research include: identifying skills, resources, and capabilities needed to handle generative AI; examining biases of generative AI attributable to training datasets and processes; exploring business and societal contexts best suited for generative AI implementation; determining optimal combinations of human and generative AI for various tasks; identifying ways to assess accuracy of text produced by generative AI; and uncovering the ethical and legal issues in using generative AI across different contexts. Abstract: Advances in reinforcement learning and implicit data collection on large-scale commercial platforms mark the beginning of a new era of personalization aimed at the adaptive control of human user environments. We present five emergent features of this new paradigm of personalization that endanger persons and societies at scale and analyze their potential to reduce personal autonomy, destabilize social and political systems, and facilitate mass surveillance and social control, among other concerns. We argue that current data protection laws, most notably the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation, are limited in their ability to adequately address many of these issues. Nevertheless, we believe that IS researchers are well-situated to engage with and investigate this new era of personalization. We propose three distinct directions for ethically aware reinforcement learning-based personalization research uniquely suited to the strengths of IS researchers across the sociotechnical spectrum. Abstract: While the data amount grows exponentially, the number of people with analytical and technical skills is only slowly increasing. This skill gap is putting pressure on the labor market and increasing the need for personnel with these skills. At the same time, companies are forced to think of alternative ways to empower their less-skilled workforce to take on Business Intelligence and Analytics (BI&A) tasks. One promising attempt to address these challenges may turn to the concept of guidance. However, the current body of research on guidance in BI&A systems is scattered and lacks a structured investigation from which future research avenues can be derived. To address this gap, this article analyzes five categories, namely BI&A phases, guidance degree, guidance generation, user roles, and interactivity form. Abstract: Integrating wireless power transfer with mobile edge computing (MEC) has become a powerful solution for increasingly complicated and dynamic industrial Internet of Things (IIOT) systems. However, the traditional approaches overlooked the heterogeneity of the tasks and the dynamic arrival of energy in wirelessly powered MEC-enabled IIOT systems. In this article, we formulate the problem of maximizing the product of the computing rate and the task execution success rate for heterogeneous tasks. To manage energy harvesting adaptively and select appropriate computing modes, we devise an online resource allocation and computation offloading approach based on deep reinforcement learning. We decompose this approach into two stages: an offloading decision stage and a stopping decision stage. The purpose of the offloading decision stage is to select the computing mode and dynamically allocate the computation round length for each task after learning from the channel state information and the task experience. This stage allows the system to support heterogeneous computing tasks. Subsequently, in the second stage, we adaptively adjust the number of fading slots devoted to energy harvesting in each round in accordance with the status of each fading slot. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm can better allocate resources for heterogeneous tasks and reduce the ratio of failed tasks and energy consumption when compared with several existing algorithms.
