Abstract: This study investigates the differential effects of badge repeatability and level on users' knowledge sharing behaviors in an online Q&A (Question & Answer) community. Drawing on reinforcement theory and attribution theory of motivation, we conjecture that nonrepeatable badges reinforce individuals' behaviors primarily by promoting internal attributions that strengthen their self-determination motivation, while repeatable badges reinforce people's behaviors mainly via external attributions that undermine their selfdetermination motivation. By using fixed-effects models to analyze a panel data, we observe that nonrepeatable badges can better motivate users to share their knowledge than repeatable badges. In addition, the results show that attaining a higher level of nonrepeatable badges is associated with an increased effect for knowledge sharing, and that attaining a higher level of repeated badges leads to a decreased effect. These findings can contribute to extant literature by offering a probable explanation regarding why some gamified awards can motivate people better than others. Collapse

Abstract: The feedback mechanism is the basis for motivating users to make continuous contributions in the Open Innovation Community (OIC). Although previous studies have revealed the overall role of positive feedback in promoting continuous user contribution, it is not clear which type of positive feedback is more effective and how it changes over time. To solve these problems, we constructed a research model based on reinforcement theory and took Lego Ideas, a typical OIC, as the research object to crawl users' ideas and feedback data for empirical analysis. The results confirmed the effect of positive feedback and further demonstrated that, the effectiveness of positive feedback varies based on feedback concreteness and the tenure of the focal user. Our study contributes to the literature on how feedback affects user contributions in online communities by refining the classifications of feedback, and provide practical guidance for companies to motivate users to contributing ideas continuously. Abstract: Information technology addicts often exhibit a high rate of relapse, which reflects the failure of previous recovery approaches. However, research on relapse to information technology addiction has been largely neglected, and few means have been developed to address this issue. To fill this research gap, this study identifies essential factors for preventing relapse to information technology addiction with a self-regulation perspective. A longi tudinal online survey is conducted. The results show that mindfulness and self-control contribute to reduced urges, which, in turn, prevent relapse. This study provides useful insights by expanding our understandings of relapse to information technology addiction. Collapse

Abstract: A reason for online communities to confer recognition (e.g., badges) on members is to acknowledge and encourage contributions. Yet, it is unclear whether such recognition or lack of it changes members’ contribution behaviors over time. While anticipated recognition has been found to motivate members’ contributions, past findings are limited regarding members’ post-recognition behaviors. Especially, the impact of multiple recognitions over time remains unexplored. Also, the contribution behavior of deserving, yet unrecognized members lacks investigation, which can help uncover the negative side effects of recognition systems. Motivated by these gaps in understanding, we build on reinforcement theory to propose a positive role of first-time recognition as a social reinforcer of contribution behavior, while repeated recognition is hypothesized to suffer from reinforcer satiation. However, for deserving, yet unrecognized members we propose a decrease in contributions due to recognition inequity. Using quasi-experiments on 81,393 reviewers of one of the largest online business review sites, Yelp.com, we find empirical support for our hypotheses, with contribution effort and quantity as outcomes. Additional analysis with contribution quality as outcome shows differing relationships for repeatedly recognized versus deserving, unrecognized members. Other than its research contributions, this study provides practical insights for designing effective recognition systems for online communities. Collapse

Abstract: a b s t r a c tThe success of the iPhone has created the smartphone application marketplace as a new business model for freelance developers, with significant potential yields. Attracting and retaining these freelance developers is an important success factor for smartphone platform owners. Therefore, using the viewpoint of freelance developers, this study adopts a discovery-oriented approach to explore antecedents of intentions to maintain a relationship with an incumbent platform. In a relationship commitment sense, freelance developers sustain incumbent relationships because of their calculative and affective commitments. Interview data further suggest that monetary rewards, potential market demand, and switching costs relate to calculative commitment; perceived service quality, identification with the platform owner, and intrinsic rewards are antecedents of affective commitment. The findings from the literature review and field research together produce an integrative framework that offers key insights for the smartphone application market, which can help central actors understand how to retain their external partners. Abstract: Social recommender systems utilize data regarding users' social relationships in filtering relevant information to users. To date, results show that incorporating social relationship data - beyond consumption profile similarity - is beneficial only in a very limited set of cases. The main conjecture of this study is that the inconclusive results are, at least to some extent, due to an under-specification of the nature of the social relations. To date, there exist no clear guidelines for using behavioral theory to guide systems design. Our primary objective is to propose a methodology for theory-driven design. We enhance Walls et al.'s (1992) IS Design Theory by introducing the notion of "applied behavioral theory," as a means of better linking theory and system design. Our second objective is to apply our theory-driven design methodology to social recommender systems, with the aim of improving prediction accuracy. A behavioral study found that some social relationships (e.g., competence, benevolence) are most likely to affect a recipient's advice-taking decision. We designed, developed, and tested a recommender system based on these principles, and found that the same types of relationships yield the best recommendation accuracy. This striking correspondence highlights the importance of behavioral theory in guiding system design. We discuss implications for design science and for research on recommender systems. Collapse

Abstract: The article presents the results of a study which examined the use of blogs in a corporate context, focusing on the social aspects of such information systems. The role of network externalities, positive feedback, and the demographic variables of age and gender were analyzed. The results of the study indicated that network effects were stronger for younger users and women, and strongest for relational networks. The effect of age was nonlinear. Abstract: To ensure that knowledge repositories contain high-quality knowledge, knowledge management research recommends that contributions to a repository undergo stringent validation processes. To date, however, no research has studied the impact of such processes on contributors' repository-related perceptions or behaviors. To address this gap, we develop a model based on signaling theory and reinforcement theory to explain how individuals' perceptions of three primary validation process characteristics (duration, transparency, and restrictiveness) impact their perceptions of repository knowledge quality and their contribution behaviors. Our empirical results confirm the importance of implementing review processes that are transparent and developmentally oriented as a way of encouraging knowledge contribution. More broadly, this study underscores the need to develop integrated theoretical models that draw from a variety of reference theories when attempting to explain knowledge-related behaviors. Collapse
