Abstract: Although studies show that organizations engaged in controversial actions often aim to minimize the release of threatening information, scholars know relatively little about what may prompt organizations to increase transparency in these situations. In this study, we focus on support from public opinion as a condition that may influence the disclosure of sensitive performance information to the public. Using the second Iraq War as an empirical context, we focus on the extent to which public officials—Pentagon spokespersons—release and frame information about war performance. This outcome is critical because the way in which organizations communicate their performance to outsiders has often been regarded as a key defensive impression management tactic. We hypothesize that high public support for the war will increase the likelihood that Pentagon officials release information about sensitive combat performance indicators in their press briefings and identify contingencies, such as adversity and organizational spokespersons’ power, that moderate this relationship. We also explore whether high public support decreases the strategic use of alternate performance frames that emphasize metrics that signal progress toward a desirable end state. Using a unique data set based on the coding of press briefings, public opinion data, and other public sources, we find support for several of our hypotheses. We discuss implications for understanding the relationship between public opinion and impression management and highlight the importance of extending this research to nongovernmental organizations. Abstract: The use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the healthcare field is gaining popularity. However, it also raises some concerns related to privacy and ethical aspects that require the development of a responsible AI framework. The principle of responsible AI states that artificial intelligence-based systems should be considered a part of composite societal and technological systems. This study attempts to establish whether AI risks in digital healthcare are positively associated with responsible AI. The moderating effect of perceived trust and perceived privacy risks is also examined. The theoretical model was based on perceived risk theory. Perceived risk theory is important in the context of this study, as risks related to uneasiness and uncertainty can be expected in the development of responsible AI due to the volatile nature of intelligent applications. Our research provides some interesting findings which are presented in the discussion section. Collapse

Abstract: Disasters bring uncertainties and substantial health, economic, social, and psychological challenges. Effective management of disasters requires thorough understanding of their causes, nature, and consequences. Affected individuals may, therefore, seek instant, trustworthy information from different sources including social networking sites (SNSs). This study investigates what leads individuals to seek disaster information on SNSs. The investigated potential drivers are source credibility (SC), argument quality (AQ), self-efficacy (SEF), perceived usefulness of information (OUI), and behavioral intention (INT). The results confirm the newly emerged source & argument quality (SAQ) construct, SEF, and PUI are significant antecedents of INT, which in turn influences disaster information seeking behavior (ISB) via SNSs. Abstract: The past decades have seen increased integration of South Asia into the global economy, yet the study on management practices in this region is behind its expansion of business. This study explores the impact of tribalism and collectivism on ethically questionable negotiation strategies in two of the most important emerging economies in South Asia – India and Pakistan. The empirical results show that participants from Pakistan consider ethically questionable negotiation strategies to be more appropriate than those from India due to high tribalism in Pakistan. In addition, this study further shows that collectivism is significantly related to the perceived appropriateness of ethically questionable negotiation strategies in Pakistan but not in India. Implications and future research for contextualizing international business research and human management practices in South Asia are then discussed. Collapse

Abstract: Software is critical to nearly every organization’s performance and can create value for all organizational functions. Given that software development firms that create solutions for client organizations are by necessity constantly seeking competitive advantage, the central objective of this research was to investigate the impact of capability building on software development firm competitiveness. Developing software is a knowledge-intensive and often complex process that requires internal exchanges among knowledgeable and capable employees within the firm. Accordingly, for software development firms, capability building is critical for competitive advantage. This research draws from capability, intellectual capital, and relational capital research streams and develops an intra-firm relational capital to intellectual capital model of capability building for software development. Ana­ lyses of data from key informants of 200 software development firms provide strong support for our model. We discuss the implications of our research for the competitiveness of software development firms for capability, intellectual capital, and relational capital theories and for firm practices. Abstract: Because our minds frequently drift away, an investigation into mind wandering while using information technology (IT) is critical. Despite growing interest in mind-wandering episodes in various domains, the discipline of Information Systems (IS) still lacks a validated measurement instrument that can account for the technology-related facets of the phenomenon. Our work addresses this gap and presents the results of a comprehensively developed scale that is specifically designed for IS scenarios. Using existing literature and the results of a pilot study (N = 35), a field study (N = 364), and a cross-validation sample (N = 336), we developed a new instrument that allows mind wandering while using technology to be measured either as a state (MWS) or as a trait with two subtypes (MWT-D: deliberate, and MWT-S: spontaneous). Whereas MWS captures a momentary mental state or a sequence of mental states that arise relatively freely while using technology in a given moment, MWT-D and MWT-S capture either intentional or unintentional, internally focused thoughts in technology-related settings in everyday life. Our scale is well suited to support future research to investigate the effects of mind wandering in technology-related settings and to study its implications for IS-relevant dependent variables, such as task performance and creativity. Abstract: Social media platforms offer a convenient way for people to interact and exchange information. However, there are sustained concerns that filter bubbles and echo chambers create information-limiting environments (ILEs) for their users. Despite a well-developed conceptual understanding, the empirical evidence regarding the causes and supporting conditions of these ILEs remains inconclusive. This paper addresses this gap by applying the triple-filter-bubble model developed by Geschke et al. (2019) to analyze empirical literature on the individual, social, and technological causes of ILEs. While we identify some factors that increase the probability of ILEs under certain conditions, our findings do not suffice to thoroughly validate conceptual models that explain why ILEs emerge. Therefore, we call for future research to investigate the causes of ILEs with higher external validity to develop a more comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon. Collapse

Abstract: This paper examines the underlying mechanisms through which paternalistic leadership (PL) motivates employees' information systems policy (ISP) compliance. We propose that the three dimensions of PL-authoritarian leadership (AL), benevolent leadership (BL), and moral leadership (ML)-influence employees' ISP compliance by affecting their perceptions of two information security control mechanisms: sanctions and the information security climate. Based on survey data from 760 participants, we found that the impact of AL is partially mediated by employees' perceptions of sanctions, the impact of BL is partially mediated by employees' perceptions of the information security climate, and the impact of ML is partially mediated by employees' perceptions of both sanctions and the information security climate. Our research extends the existing literature by exploring the impact of specific leadership styles on employees' perceptions of information security control mechanisms and by proposing that perceptions of information security control mechanisms play a mediating role between PL and ISP compliance. The findings suggest that in addition to choosing effective control mechanisms, it is also important for leaders to adjust their leadership style to ensure that employees perceive control mechanisms in the expected manner.Jiawen Zhu is an assistant professor in the School of Management, Xi'an Jiaotong University. Abstract: Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) Cloud computing as the next stage of internet evolution provides all the computing resources as services over the Internet. In the SaaS cloud computing research area, there are many studies from the user’s point of view, but there is relatively little research on the supplier’s success strategy. The purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the factors that determine the market competitiveness necessary for SaaS cloud computing providers to survive in the mid to long term. We presented application dimension and technology maturity as SaaS idiosyncratic factors and show how these factors influence the business performance of SaaS providers through a differentiation strategy and low-cost strategy. Using a multivariate latent growth curve model, this study analyzed 199 strategic business units of SaaS cloud computing providers in Korea for three years. Our results find that SaaS cloud computing idiosyncratic factors did not significantly enhance the software providers’ business performance in the early stage. However, they significantly affected the growth rate of their customer base and financial performance as the SaaS technology became mature over time. In addition, this study identifies a set of business, strategic, and technical considerations to guide the practitioners’ decision-making process for selecting an appropriate SaaS cloud computing model. Abstract: Entitlement has been identified as a potentially valuable employee characteristic in the prediction of computer abuse but has not been studied systematically in the IS domain. We introduce the construct of technological entitlement as the persistent sense of being more deserving of technological resources, uses, and privileges compared to other employees. Adapting a model of general entitlement to the work technology context, we theorize that technological entitlement predicts computer abuse and that this relationship is amplified by perceptions of technology restriction. After developing and validating a scale to measure technological entitlement, we conduct three studies with working adult samples to test our hypotheses. In Study 1 (n = 187), using a behavioral design, we find that technological entitlement predicts computer abuse behavior (beyond general entitlement) and that this relationship is stronger when employees perceive organizational restrictions on technology usage. We replicate these findings in Study 2 (n = 339) with an experiment. In Study 3 (n = 156), we manipulate the context of restrictiveness within our experimental vignette to establish the generalizability of our moderator. We discuss how technological entitlement helps explain existing inconsistencies in the effectiveness of deterrence measures as well as other theoretical and practical implications of our work.
