Abstract: We use the lens of the intrinsic/extrinsic motivation theory to holistically model the effects of intangible awards on member contribution in virtual communities. Using multiple studies on Yelp, we validate that the influence of award stimuli on contribution outcomes become significantly moderated by the aspect of contribution (quantity versus quality) and the novelty of stimuli (time and repetition of awards) to interestingly form divergent (downward versus upward) yet theoretically explicable curvilinear trajectories of contribution. This study contributes to IS literature on virtual communities and social-cognitive literature on work motivation and offers insights to community managers to design better incentive systems. Abstract: Genuine theory testing, also under the term “replication research”, is rarely found in Information Systems (IS) research. Based on a replication’s results, our understanding or representation of the original theory is updated. This function of replication is integral to a scientific discipline to accumulate confidence in the explanatory power of a theory and to weed out theories that did not withstand scrutiny. However, many new theories are only tested once in the original study, while subsequent studies reference it without explicitly questioning the original theory. Against this background, we examine three aspects of the current state of replication studies in IS: (1) how many explicit replication studies in key IS research outlets have been published; (2) the attitudes of senior scholars, mostly prestigious IS journals’ editors, towards publishing replication research in their journals; and (3) a new policy proposal towards replication research broadly across all journals. We propose that all journals should take responsibility for publishing replications of theory or empirical results that have formerly been presented in that journal. Collapse

Abstract: Smart personal assistants (SPAs), such as Alexa for example, promise individualized user interactions owing to their varying interaction possibilities, knowledgeability, and human-like behaviors. To support the widespread adoption and use of SPAs, organizations such as Google or Amazon provide low code environments that support the development of SPAs (e.g., for Google Home or Amazon's Alexa). These so-called low code platforms enable domain experts (e.g., business users without programming skills or experience) to develop SPAs for their purposes. However, using these platforms alone does not guarantee a useful and good conversation with novel SPAs due to non-intuitive design choices. Following a design science research approach, we propose the Smart Personal Assistant for Domain Experts (SPADE) method to address the missing link. This method supports domain experts in the development and contextualization of sophisticated SPAs for various application scenarios and focuses especially on conversational and anthropomorphic design steps. Our proof of concept and proof of value results show that SPADE is useful for supporting domain experts to create effective SPAs in different domains beyond private set-ups. Collapse

Abstract:While access and adoption issues related to online health management tools (OHMT) have been studied in healthcare contexts, questions remain about whether and how their use impacts patients' perceptions of healthcare. Drawing on technology affordance and media synchronicity frameworks, we explore how the existence of multiple chronic conditions (MCC) and differences in usage pattern due to patient's generation impact these relationships. Utilizing HINTS data, this study provides empirical support for a positive relationship between utilization of electronic personal health records (e-PHRs) and healthcare quality perceptions, albeit with a caveat that patients with greater healthcare needs as well as millennial and younger generations do not seem to enjoy the same benefits from increased use of e-PHRs. Furthermore, asynchronous patient-provider electronic communication is yet to achieve positive perceptions of better healthcare quality for most users. This research bears implications for personalization and customization of OHMT to account for variations in patients' healthcare needs and usage patterns. Collapse

Abstract: Constantly evolving economic demands caused by phenomena such as digital transformation necessitate businesses and their underlying models to adapt. One possible solution for enhancing innovation potential and increasing revenue is implementing an innovation capability maturity model. This research replicates an existing maturity model development approach, which accounts for the unique characteristics of a class of companies based on their size and sector. Thus, by using a data-driven method, we provide an innovation capability maturity model for small industrial companies. We identified 21 combinations of factors that can affect innovation capability maturity, grouped into a knowledge and organizational dimension. Using a set-theoretic approach, we identified configurations of these factors that lead to low, medium, and high levels of innovation capability maturity. Based on these findings, we support an empirically driven, set-theoretic approach for developing a maturity model that can be used for higher applicability and representativity in individual classes of companies. Abstract: Online equity markets have significantly changed the dynamics of connecting angels and individual equity investors to new ventures that seek early-stage capital. However, for those early-stage investors, information pointing to the success of business-to-business (B2B) new ventures (B2BNVs) is scattered and disconnected. This paper focuses on social media narratives (SMNs) as a source of insight for such investors and proposes that predicting a B2BNV's likelihood of success requires a comparative view, i.e., a comparison of its SMNs with those of its competitors and customers. We expect that higher (lower) lingual similarity between the SMNs of an early-stage B2BNV and those of its prospective customers (competitors) predict its success. Using a longitudinal panel of 574 B2BNVs resulting in more than 2,700 venture-round observations, we find that a comparative view of a venture's SMNs can give early-stage investors reliable predictions about the B2BNV's ability to manage its market presence and its success in later stages. Our models show that a comparative view of SMNs increases the accuracy of predicting a B2BNV's later-stage fundraising success by an average of 15%. Furthermore, predictive models can reliably point to a successful market presence in later stages, including the landing of customers, the winning of awards and competitions, the receiving of endorsements, the generating of revenue, and the successful patenting of products. Our study contributes to existing literature that focuses on the business impacts of social media by demonstrating the usefulness of comparative linguistics in social media analytics, i.e., comparing the firm's social media communications to those of its competitors and business customers in the prediction of the entrepreneurial firm's success. Abstract: Smart services offer great innovation potential by incorporating digital technologies into non-digital value-creation processes. As smart service innovation poses significant challenges to organizations, existing research has contributed to understanding and addressing this phenomenon by developing various methods, tools, and processes. Yet, the academic community often still fails to bridge the "last mile" and help practitioners apply this knowledge in their specific application contexts. This article outlines how research can empower practitioners by systematically providing methodological knowledge for smart service innovation. We review and contrast existing methodologies and present a conceptual framework for value co-creation through smart service innovation methodologies. In addition, we identify six essential resource types required in these methodologies and propose emergent research avenues to guide future contributions to smart service innovation research. Abstract: While researchers are expected to look for significant results to confirm their hypotheses, some engage in intentional or unintentional HARKing (Hypothesizing After Results are Known) and p-hacking (repeated tinkering with data and retesting). If these practices are widespread, one possible result is field-wide exaggerated (inflated) results reported in Information Systems (IS) publications. In this paper, we summarize the literature on HARKing and p-hacking across different disciplines. We offer an illustrative example of how an IS study could involve HARKing and p-hacking in various stages of the project to generate a more "publishable" result. We also report on a survey targeted at IS researchers to explore their experiences and awareness of this issue. Finally, we provide recommendations and suggestions based on the review of practices in other fields and advocate for more transparency in reporting research projects, so that study results can be interpreted properly, and reproducibility and replicability can be increased. Abstract: The cyber security industry is rapidly adopting threat hunting as a proactive tool for early and faster detection of suspected malicious actors. In this paper, we propose a machine learning-based method, Unsupervised Hunting of Anomalous Commands (UHAC), to detect text-based anomalous commands in security information and event management (SIEM) logs that are good candidates for threat hunting. A unique feature of the proposed method is that it first creates a feature set based on the augmentation of document-term and document-character matrices. Then, an autoencoder-based detector is trained on this feature set using a custom loss function. UHAC consis­ tently outperforms other feature sets and algorithms such as one-class support vector machine, density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise, and word-embedding based models such as word2vec. The UHAC detector identifies 84–89% of anomalies in the top 10% of the data. Findings have implications for cybersecurity analysts who perform threat hunting in SIEM logs for process auditing on endpoint devices. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper, we explore the decoy effect in recommendation systems. Including a decoy item in a set of alternatives can influence the attractiveness of the other items by facilitating decision making. Prior research literature has indeed shown the decoy effect to be robust in traditional choice settings, with consistent reporting of an overall positive impact. Practitioners often use decoys to help drive demand for specific items. Recommendation systems too are increasingly being used to present item choice sets to customers and users. Both recommendation systems and the decoy effect can be used as strategies to help facilitate decision making. However, previous work has not examined the decoy effect in the context of recommendations. The decoy effect may facilitate consumer decision making and positively impact user behavior when used with recommendation systems. However, in the recommendation context, customers often have different expectations for the reliability and quality of the presented information. Hence, a decoy as a recommendation could signal issues in system reliability, resulting in a negative effect. We perform a randomized, controlled laboratory experiment and use persuasion theory as the theoretical lens to demonstrate that the decoy effect works differently in the context of recommendation systems. Specifically, we show that depending on the recommendation context, the decoy effect can or cannot drive demand for target items. We find that including a decoy minimizes the demand for the target option when personalized recommendations are presented, which deviates from the traditional decoy effect. However, a decoy increases the target’s demand when nonpersonalized recommendations are shown, following the conventional decoy effect. We explore the mechanism behind these findings and show the robustness of our results by conducting multiple analyses and additional experiments.
