Abstract: Design science as a research paradigm is gaining popularity in the information systems (IS) discipline. E-gov ernment research explores IS artifacts designed to improve the quality and efficiency of public administration and service. This paper utilizes the E-government Design Research Model (EgovDR Model) to review e-gov ernment designs. Through a comprehensive literature review, this paper identifies prototypical e-government tasks for design science implementation and the corresponding solutions. We demonstrate whether and how the development and evolution of e-government designs continue to gain relevance in design science research. Additionally, this paper identifies and analyzes the theories employed in the literature to illustrate how the EgovDR Model has facilitated e-government designs in increasing rigor over time. Our findings indicate the majority of the workpractice tasks in existing e-government designs are decision-support tasks. Collapse

Abstract: Wine tasting is a multisensory collective activity because it involves other senses in addition to sight and hearing. The importance of these multiple senses for wine tasting makes it more challenging to digitalize than other collective activities. We conducted an ethnography and used a semiotic analysis to explore the strategies to digitalize wine tasting sessions. In so doing, we examined how small artisanal winemakers and wine merchants in Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, and Switzerland moved their wine tasting sessions online to compensate for their lost key revenue streams during the global Covid-19 crisis. Based on our analysis, we present a typology of virtual wine tasting and illustrate how the approach to digitalize wine tasting evolved from a reactive approach to a more proactive one. We also identify strategies to digitalize wine tasting and characterize its social space. We discuss some avenues to regard virtual wine tasting as something more than just a digital representation of in-person wine tasting session by highlighting the mediating role of an information system. Finally, we propose some implications for digitalizing other multisensory collective activities. Collapse

Abstract: As the world turns digital, the number of information system (IS) that individuals use in their work and nonwork lives has increased significantly. These different IS are often subject to interactions and interdependencies among them, which creates new challenges and opportunities for individuals. Yet we observe a disconnect between this “multi-IS” reality and individual-level IS research, which is shaped by a dominant single-IS paradigm—that is, a deep-rooted focus on one-to-one relationships between users and IS. Although we do not question the accomplishments made by prior research, we observe at least three problems that emerge from the traditional single-IS perspective. First, the single-IS paradigm might produce incomplete theories that do not consider interactions between multiple IS that are relevant to a phenomenon. Second, existing theories that represent a phenomenon from a single-IS perspective might misrepresent the phenomenon when considering it from a multi-IS perspective. Third, we might simply lack theories for certain phenomena that involve users’ interactions with multiple IS. To inspire future researchers to overcome the boundaries of the single-IS paradigm, we first illustrate its prevalence in existing research and then build on representation theory and general systems theory to offer a framework for theorizing about multi-IS phenomena. We also demonstrate how scholars can apply this framework to study challenges and opportunities that occur when individuals interact with multiple IS. This way, we offer a foundation for future research that helps to improve work and life in our multi-IS world. Collapse

Abstract: Because most real-world domains intended to be supported by an information system are complex, practitioners often use multiple different types of conceptual modeling scripts to understand them. We performed two experiments to examine how two theoretical factors of multiple scriptscombined ontological completeness and ontological overlap-influence how users develop an understanding of a real-world domain from multiple scripts. Results of the first experiment show that to some degree, ontological overlap improves participants' understanding of a domain, more so than combined ontological completeness. In the second experiment, we tracked the eye movement data of participants to understand how ontological overlap between scripts impacts users' information search and cognitive integration processes. We found that some occurrence of semantically similar constructs between scripts helps individuals to identify and relate constructs presented in different scripts. Users, therefore, can identify and focus on script areas that are relevant to their problem tasks. However, a high level of ontological overlap decreases the attention paid by participants to relevant task-specific areas because they spend more time searching for relevant information. Together, our findings both refine and extend existing conceptual modeling theory. We clarify the dialectics between the full and parsimonious real-world representations offered through multiple scripts and the individual's understanding of the domain that is represented by those scripts. Abstract: When analyzing empirical phenomena, the implicit or explicit assumptions we have of rela tionality guide what we take as the primary units of analysis and how we study them. This paper investigates and expands on the notion of relationality and relational explanations in the Critical Realist (CR) paradigm of Information Systems (IS) research. As digital technologies are becoming increasingly adaptive to the social and socio-technical structures they are embedded in, it is necessary to expand the field's conceptual tools in its study of digital phenomena. Therefore, to explain why the digital seems more tightly coupled to social phenomena than other types of technologies, the concept of transformational emergence is introduced. The key argument is that the malleability of digital entities entails that they are disposed to transform by emergence, which is key to understanding the constitutive relationality between the social and the technical in contemporary digital phenomena. This has fundamental implications for CR-based theories in the IS field, most notably Affordance theory and Representation theory. Collapse

Abstract: In this paper we investigate the relationship between algorithmic search tools and the innovation process. Today, search algorithms are used for all tasks, yet we know little about their impact on the well-studied innovation process. We suggest a theoretical framework based on centripetal and centrifugal forces that conceptualizes the relationship between the algorithmic design logics of search tools and the innovation process. We use it to illustrate the current challenges with the use of informational search tools based on design principles of popularity and personalization, for innovation. Abstract: The benefits that organizations accrue from information systems depend on how effectively the systems are used. Yet despite the importance of knowing what it takes to use information systems effectively, little theory on the topic exists. One recent and largely untested exception is the theory of effective use (TEU). We report on a contextualization, extension, and test of TEU in the business intelligence (BI) context, a context of considerable importance in which researchers have called for such studies. We used a mixed methods, three-phase approach involving instrument development (n = 218), a two-wave cross-sectional survey (n = 437), and three sets of follow-up interviews (n = 33). The paper contributes by (1) showing how TEU can be contextualized, operationalized, and extended, (2) demonstrating that many of TEU’s predictions hold in the BI context while also revealing ways to improve the theory, and (3) offering practical insights that executives can draw on to improve the use of BI in their organizations. Abstract: This paper studies the process by which data are generated, managed, and assembled into tradable objects we call data commodities. We link the making of such objects to the open and editable nature of digital data and to the emerging big data industry in which they are diffused items of exchange, repurposing, and aggregation. We empirically investigate the making of data commodities in the context of an innovative telecommunications operator, analyzing its efforts to produce advertising audiences by repurposing data from the network infrastructure. The analysis unpacks the processes by which data are repurposed and aggregated into novel data-based objects that acquire organizational and industry relevance through carefully maintained metrics and practices of data management and interpretation. Building from our findings, we develop a process theory that explains the transformations data undergo on their way to becoming commodities and shows how these transformations are related to organizational practices and to the editable, portable, and recontextualizable attributes of data. The theory complements the standard picture of data encountered in data science and analytics, and renews and extends the promise of a constructivist Information Systems (IS) research into the age of datafication. The results provide practitioners, regulators included, vital insights concerning data management practices that produce commodities from data. Collapse

Abstract: Emergency warning apps are critical to alert the population during emergencies, but are countries using them effectively? There is little theoretical understanding of what it means to use warning apps effectively. As a result, there is also little knowledge about how to design them. Drawing on the Theory of Effective Use (TEU) (Burton-Jones and Grange, 2013), this research proposes three principles to design emergency apps: 1) Designing for timeliness; 2) Designing for trustworthiness; 3) Designing for situational awareness. We derived these principles from studying how different dimensions of use interact with each other by looking at users' feedback (online reviews) about two German mobile warning apps: NINA and Katwarn.
